I misread this at first and thought it said a successor to Elite, which made me excited for a second.

But it prompted me to do a little research and I found Vega Strike, a very good open-source game in the Elite lineage (i.e., space trading), and even though it still says beta, it's perfectly playable, and already incredibly detailed and fun.

(It also reminds me of FreeOrion, also still in development but not fully playable like Vega Strike, I gather, but I'll link to for reference).

    I Wanna Be The Guy

It may not look like much at first...until you start playing it and the totally-fuck-you-in-the-face-with-a-rusty-wooden-spoon level design rears its ugly head.

I can now see why the game website is titled 'IWBTG! A Very Hard Game About a Boy and 8-bit Masochism!'

Oh, I just remembered about this video...I'd want one about IWBTG in a similar style.

(Of course, that Super Mario Bros. hack probably has nothing on IWBTG in terms of difficulty...especially when you can skip most of the alternate World 1-1 by breaking a block jumping through the ceiling at a point halfway through the level.)

    EDIT: Found one!

Actually I think that it's primarily influenced by Wing Commander and Privateer.

In fact there's two completed Privateer remakes floating around that were built upon Vegastrike (can't link to them as I believe they've used loads of assets from the original game).

Yeah ... that's why I said "Elite lineage"; it was just the first in that line. I didn't meant to say it was the main influence. I was just connecting it to my previous sentence, and as just a shorthand for games in that style.

I just have to say that Allegiance is an excellent game. Give it a try, and don't be discouraged by the learning curve.

The Marathon trilogy is LEGAL abandonware. Playable on practically every platform now thanks to an enhanced source port. There's lots of user-made HD content packs too, designed for said source port.

Abandonware is the wrong word for it, but it's the only word that fits. Too bad I hate Marathon 1, want to like 2, and haven't bothered with 3. The primary problem? They all make me physically ill.

    How about open-source freeware?

EDIT: For clarification, the engine is open-source; the game is freeware.

Ultima IV I'm pretty sure is freeware. I recall that some fan site got permission from Origin and/or Garriott to post the DOS version on their site.

One Must Fall 2097 was released as freeware by the developer. An overlooked DOS fighter, inspired by mecha anime.

    WolfQuest

    http://www.wolfquest.org

Sorts of a remake of an oldie "Wolf simulator", called "Wolf" from 1995.

Learn about wolf ecology by living the life of a wild wolf in Yellowstone National Park. Play alone or with friends in on-line multiplayer missions, explore the wilderness, hunt elk, and encounter stranger wolves in your quest to find a mate. Ultimately, your success will depend on forming a family pack, raising pups, and ensuring the survival of your pack.
The WolfQuest experience goes beyond the game with an active online community where you can discuss the game with other players, chat with wolf biologists, and share artwork and stories about wolves.

Both the single-player and multiplayer game will offer about a couple of hours of gameplay (or more, if you want to replay the same missions). Key features:

    * Create your wolf avatar, selecting male or female, choosing from a range of realistic wolf coats (and customizing the coat with color tints), and configuring its abilities (strength, speed, and stamina).
    * Explore four square kilometers of alpine wilderness on the slopes of Amethyst Mountain in Yellowstone National Park, running across open meadows, through dense fir forests, and along sheer cliffs.
    * Hunt elk. Follow scent trails to locate elk herds, then sneak up on the herd, find the weakest one, and begin your attack. Pursue your prey and sap its strength while dodging its counterattacks, to make the kill.
    * Harrass coyotes who try to eat elk carcasses, or just for the fun of it.
    * Chase and eat snowshoe hares.
    * Earn Experience Points for bragging rights with other players.

Additional features of the single-player game:

    * Follow scent trails to find stranger wolves. Communicate with them through wolf vocalizations and behaviors.
    * Find a mate and establish a bond.

    Additional features of multiplayer games:

    * Form a pack with 2-5 players in private multiplayer sessions.
    * Chat with other players with an in-game safe chat system, limited to common English words
    * Work as a team to bring down a powerfull bull elk.
I have tried this and I think it's a neat educational ecological simulation. It also looks pretty while it doesn't have killing requirements. However I must complain it has a bit clumsy wolf character control and I have noticed several bugs. Hopefully they improve them in future versions - new episodes will probably come out during this year.

    This is fun.

Just spent 2 hours with it, I've found the first 3 keycards, and it constantly keeps surprising me with new things that you can do. I'm a bit let down by the fact that you can't kill stuff by hurling crates/things at em tho.

    THE NAMELESS

    THE FUCKING NAAAAAAMEEELEEESSSSSS!!!!!!!!

    A review. By henke.

Why haven't I heard of this game called Exile before? This shit is classic! I seriously have a hard time beliveing that all the stuff in Nameless was really that game they made 20 years ago. The complex physics, the breakable debris, the story, the fricken ECOSYSTEM! Well, maybe calling it an ecosystem is an exageration but I got real kick out of throwing one of those red floaty things over at the wasps to find out that IT EATS THE WASPS! And the more it eats the bigger and bigger it gets until it pops and leaves a big diamond! BTW my final score was 10000+ something and I got 100% on everything except for the Ore which I only found 99% of. Grrrr.

And what about those Space-Sheep eh? I was so thrilled when I escorted one into what looked like some sorta space-sheep pen and saw the little green light light up. I just kneeeew I had done something right. And the game doesn't tell you jack shit! You gotta figure it all out for yourself and when you do it's just so rewarding. I read that Exile is one of only 3 games that EDGE has given a posthumous 10/10 score to and I can see why. It's just perfect gamedesign. Even today it holds up.

That was 7 or 8 hours well spent. I will be going back some day. To replay it. And find that last 1% or ore. Thanks for the tip ShadowCat.

EVERYONE DOWNLOAD THE NAMELESS AND PLAY IT NOW

I just realized that The Nameless(no pun intended)is actually a spiritual sequel to Exile, NOT a remake. Thus, I might as well install and play it...

...if the damn download link on the Web page wasn't always giving me a corrupted .zip file!

No offense to you, but that was the most ridiculous, buggy, WTF game ever. The wolf jumps 30 feet straight up. And the controls are broken. I really liked the premise, and I am rooting for it, it is just an unplayable mess in my experience. Any tips? Am I possibly missing something or doing anything wrong?

Also, THe Nameless is looking great so far. Good start.
