T1 Mission: The Storm July 5/06

Anyone found all the loot yet? I am shy about 70 loot!

    Also, what happened:

    spoiler:
After I got the Hand of Glory, suddenly there three new guards looking for me, and several dead hammers on the ground floor outside the ladie's bedroom? What was supposed to have happened here?

You might have missed either the bottle on the floor in one of the dark Hammerite rooms or (more probably) the LC tapestry in the Hammerite area.

For the author (if he's here): I liked the atmosphere of a medieval mansion in a storm and the weather effects were nicely done. One criticism, though - it's better to include a "return back" objective, since now the mission ends when the player has found more than 1800 loot and the Hand. But a lot of people want to try to find all the loot, which is impossible like this (since the mission ends when you're over 1800).

Thanks, Preno - that was it.

    To Author:

Nice first level - I also liked the weather and lightning.

The only thing I don't really like is pitch black rooms - I don't know if that was intentional or not, but they tend to annoy. Other than that, good job

I'd still like to know what happened after I took the Hand, though.

I'm short on loot. Where is the tapestry in the Hammerite building that was mentioned? I can't seem to find it.

Thanks for the thief 1 goodness. Its been awhile. I thought the rain was a little loud indoors but other than that. Well done for a noob Drom ed person.
Also as for hard to notice loot I was short untill I
    spoiler:
found the loot behind one of the hammers in the second chapel
then I was at 100 % loot found.

Thanks, Lightningline! That's exactly what I needed to know. This is a nice little mission for a first effort. I don't like the pitch black rooms but the weather effects made for a nice atmosphere and I quite enjoyed it. Thanks!

Nice little mission, well done! I liked the interactivity with the hammers and guards appearing, kept me on my toes.

    No sword? Ack!

    Edit: Yay, just found one!

To the author, one word... ObjCast lighting.

    Hello everyone

Thank you all for your feedback. I have to be honest here and say that towards the end, I started getting restless. I've been playing Thief for a long, long time, but I'd never made a mission for it until now. I rushed through it at the end, resulting in the pitch black rooms you mentioned, and simplistic mission objectives. Now I feel I can wait longer and really polish my next one off better.

Again, I appreciate your (everyone! ) review of my mission "The Storm".
I'm now on my next mission-

    J_J

    p.s. ObjCast lighting?

I assume he meant you only QuickLit your mission. You should Objcast light it so that the terrain and objects throw proper shadows. You should also raise the ambient light setting to avoid the pitch black rooms. But that's all just a guess since I haven't played it...

    Thank you

Wow, I wasn't even aware that DromEd could do that. I'll definitely use those functions on my next one. I'm also taffing with the idea of creating a new, larger version of the Storm with more objectives etc.

I guess you have to start somewhere! Thanks everyone again for all your feedback!

If you didn't use obj cast lighting I highy recommed taking the time to relight the map and set the ambient light to a better value as well. Those of us who use dromed can do it fairly easliy but the average player can not. Best to spend a few minutes correcting things and re-submit the file so you work gets shown in the best light. (awful pun....yes I know! )

Indeed, you should fix those two things and update your mission to v1.1 so that players can enjoy it!

    Dear Friends

    J_J here,

I've updated The Storm v1.0 to the Storm v1.1, and have submitted it.
I'm not sure exactly when it will be posted for download, but I don't think
it will be too long. Thank you for your input and advice. I hope you enjoy
    my mission.

    Good night!

That's great. An author gets respect for doing things like that. I'll certainly download the new version.

    New version is up already.

    Thanks!

Now I just have to make sure my next one goes more smoothly.
I'll definitely have people test it first! I doubt I'll do the rain thing
again for quite a while though. I think the rain is one of the reasons
the map ended up so small. I just didn't want to worry about all the effects,
which were buggy at first. The sound kept cutting off, etc.

    Take it easy!

I'll definitely play through again later on today. I'll look forward to your next mission.

Well, v. 1.1 is definitely going to take longer than the original - the loot is rather well hidden, and by 'rather' I mean 'fiendishly'. Got 1758 so far, missing 115. I could swear I've looked everywhere in this small FM.

    Good morning

If anyone wants hints, or straight up answers, just e-mail me at:

j_j_dayo@yahoo.com and I'll be happy to answer any questions

you may have. I guess this is the trouble with being a noob! You

don't know just how hard/easy to make it, nor if people will enjoy

it or just get annoyed by it I'm guessing this level of loot

hiding might have been too hard....ooops.

That's why you need betatesters, even if you're just making changes like this to an FM. Next time, just post a request for testers on the forum here and you'll get lots of volunteers to help you out.

Fun little mission, but I am stuck at 1773 loot. I found everything mentioned so far in this thread. Any other ideas?

Yes, there's one piece of loot up high. I've got it all now and I've completed the mission. Much better than the first version!
