Jeez, $50 on Steam? I can get a retail copy cheaper through Play.com, not that it matters much as I suspect I will end up buying the Super Happy Limited Edition anyway, but still....Valve sends word they have partnered with Ubisoft to distribute Dark Messiah of Might and Magic digitally via Steam when the Source-engine RPG is released in October, estimating the price point at about $50. On a related note, Ubisoft announces plans for a Limited Edition of the game:
SAN FRANCISCO - August 30th, 2006 - Today Ubisoft, one of the world's largest video game publishers, proudly announces that a limited edition of Dark Messiah of Might and Magic will be released in North America at the game's launch in October 2006.
The North American limited edition will feature:
- Dark Messiah of Might and Magic on DVD
- Unique in-game content extras
- One multiplayer skin
- Four single-player weapons
- Exclusive "Making Of" video and trailers
- Game soundtrack on Audio CD
- 12 collectible character cards

Personally, I don't give a rats arse what other channels they sell it through or how much they price them at (even if the steam version was $9.99). I planned on getting the Limited Edition DVD when it was first announced. I don't even care if the L.E. is priced at $89.99, as long as it doesn't require steam to play... I'm happy.
I will probably purchase the DVD myself, but it's good to see that they are releasing it on Steam. Whilst Steam cops a lot of flack from many people, it does have the advantage that games purchased from there can always be redownloaded, whereas if you damage your DVD/CD then you're pretty stuffed.
Technically speaking all Steam games can be as well, whether you bought them on DVD or downloaded them through Steam itself. Once you have registered the game through Steam, it's on your account and you can re-download the game content whenever you like.

I can see where Vigil's coming from as your post isn't terribly clear that the damaged CD/DVD scenario doesn't really apply to Steam games.
Fair enough. What I was trying to say was that I am getting the DVD anyway despite Steam having the said advantage over DVD.
Does anybody have any idea of how the money is distributed? What I mean is, if I buy (the regular version) from Steam, how much does Arkane get, how much does Ubisoft get, and how much does Valve get? And how does that compare to buying it (the regular version) in my local game store?
I'll be buying this one on DVD just for the fact that I like having a backup copy in case I were to be somewhere without an internet connection (God forbid!). Also, its nice to add another game to my increasingly large collection of DVDs and CDs.
I won't be buying through Steam as long as it has a vendetta against my credit card, but to be honest, I much prefer owning the DVD and being able to play it after I instantly install rather than having to download before installing. A whole DVD worth download? That'd take a fair whack of time.
The advantage of digital downloads is that when your house burns down, you still have a few games.
That said, yeah, despite being a c-r-a-z-y environmentalist, I'm a stickler for the physical packages (I'm a collector!).

Will they be releasing the limited edition to countries other than North America? From what I heard previously they didn't specify where it would be realised to, so I assumed it will be to everywhere that is getting the standard edition.
On the subject of steam, I don't like it as much as having all the game content on a CD or DVD that I can own.

For me, digital download has a unique advantage.
I am not currently allowed to own physical copies of video games, due to a nonsensical rule that my college has for first-semester students. I can, however, get away with downloaded stuff.

I'm a little disappointed 'cause the demo is no challenge and in all the movies the player minipulates the enemies like hell. It seems singleplayer won't be hard. I really hope Dark Messiah will be quite a challenge against the inteligence of the AI. Or else it will seem like a slaughter-fest. The way the combat system is made is definately awesome, as well as the physics engine and all the new ideas. Still anticipating the release.

Preloading on steam began today.
I only mention this because they did something very smart - if you already had the demo downloaded then poof, you had the game preloaded. While I worried about how big the demo was and thought it really hurt them, limiting who downloaded it, actually using the demo data to install the full game rather than making a whole new copy makes so much sense.
But it's a moot point; I'll be buying the collectors edition DVD anyway.
I got it on steam and its currently pre-loading, only 10Gbytes in size, wtf, thats 3 dvd or 2 dual layer dvds
Yep, that's bloody huge! Incidently, I've never found Steam to be particularly fast so that would take ages to download for most people. Whilst I have an 8+ Mbit ADSL connection at home (max 850 kb/s), I can never get more than 250kb/s from Steam even if I don't have anything else running.
Its pre-loading in sections left it running last night got 2.16 gbytes worth of encrypted data, it also seams to have updated some of the source base files as well, so more could have downloaded. I think it could be being downloaded in a very compressed file then expanded once it gets on your harddrive. Cos I have seen 1.5Gbytes being compressed down to 300mbytes, then expanded back to 1.5Gbytes without any data loss.
It looks like if you already have steam installed, this is all of the 10gb you have to download. the other 8gb is the source engine, and probably a bit to download on release day.

2nd preload has started, for release on 25th october for north america and 27th for rest of the world.
2nd preload is huge, probably the remaining 8 gigabytes.
8 gigs? Damn! I think I'll just pre-order the box instead.
As it turns out it was 4 gigabytes.
So there we go. This was from a boxed Collector's Edition.
I got an urge to kick orcs off the ledges, so I headed to the local gamestore. They only had the Collector Edition. For us filthy Europeans, it lacked these two things:
- Game soundtrack on Audio CD
- 12 collectible character cards
The soundtrack is playable from the bonus DVD, but that's not the same as popping a cd into a player. No cards of anysort. On the other hand it did have a fancy, glossy card of the multiplayer maps.
