Crap FM: A long way down Dec. 16/06

I think there is nothing crappy about this FM. So, does it lose? I may vote for it anyway. That would make my vote crap. Just deserts, I say.

I got through it once fairly easily on Normal with about half the loot. Then I started trying to find all the loot, and that is where the fun began! There are a lot of terrific route finding puzzles here that you can bypass if you are just going down. I managed to find my way back to the starting point. That was much more challenging than going down. If this is ever converted to a "full sized" FM, then it might be interesting to have an objective in Expert skill to go down and then get back up. Some loot objectives might also add to the game play.

I am missing 65 loot now. I think I know where some or all of it may be.
    spoiler:
There is an open window opposite the starting point. The window is in a gray stone building that overhangs a big drop. I can jump on top of the window, but I see no apparent way to get inside the room below. I see a pair of white dice on the table.
Has anyone made it inside that room? If so, how?

I tried that already, but that passage does not work for me. First of all, the
    spoiler:
metal passage I can find in the area (it has a ramp at the beginning) is southeast from the window, not southwest. Then, the only routes I can successfully take in that metal passage are to go down, which takes me to the brick courtyard with the dead guy.
I have an alternate route to that passage:
    spoiler:
I can jump mantle to the ledge, with no damage, starting from the opposite area with the lamp post and the generator.
With some effort, using that route, I carried three crates over there
    spoiler:
trying to make a route upward at two of the junctions in the metal passage, but I failed at both. Stacking crates in there is awkward and does not get me high enough to enter an upward branch.
So, how do you go up, or am I missing something?

remember, the FM doesnt have to make sense

but anyways, i agree, this mission has pretty well-designed architecture, nice effort for a short LOTP-style mission, doesnt seem to belong in this contest...

A few things. I think the crap part of this is subtle achictectural (sp) flaws. (Giant windows, parially unlocked doors, upside down lantern, the stairs next to the drunk, floating chairs, things underneath the tables etc)
After I was done, it started to play Kidnap. Weird. Other wise, I completly missed everything hidden in this mission.
And for the key find the lockbox.

I had a lot of fun playing this one. I went through it 3 times before I left it to go on to other entries. I also came up 65g. short so I'll be looking forward to hearing who made it so I can ask if there's a way into that one window that Peter mentioned. Excellent work!

Actually, I've gotten down in less than 12 seconds. It even said "Objective Complete"... but the game seems to think negative hit points is a bad thing.

So my best time is 39s. The problem is on the pipes where it goes under the balcony I have to crawl. That and remembering to hit the first pipe after the blue roof so I don't take too much damage too early.

    Now... Try it on expert!

(if only I had a frog egg... or just some guard on the street below...)

    To get into the window:

    spoiler:
From the "magic lampost thing" a few feet to the north-east is a ledge, mantle it and continue north, from the end of this ledge you can run and jump (whilst strafing may help) and catch the edge of the window and mantle in.
The dice give you 50 loot.
As for the way out, you can walk off the window ledge and land on the rail of the metal walkway far below (not sure why ths works) without any damage.

It's not easy getting in, made it 2 out of 10 times or so, but do-able.

Can return to same spot from big window

Yes, there's nothing (gameplay-wise) crap about this mission at all...it's total fun! After getting those dice, one time I was able to simply leap back and mantle up to where I leapt from before, that corner of concrete path below the wood-block-structure-balcony that's overhead. Also found all but 15 of the loot - everyone else in that same boat?

Now, anyone find the big EASTER EGG? i.e., the
    spoiler:
    999 "hctawlegna" arrows
? Except, how do you get out of there? No loot in there, either, I don't think...Ask me about the area if you can't find them...need all 3 boxes (assuming there's only 3)...

Try 32...! ...and 3 shields of health left...

Edit: Ooh, now 31 seconds, and *lots* of health left, more than a dozen shields! Couldn't count them all quick enough. How does one go about making a recording session of activity in Thief 2?

Edit: 28 seconds with 2 shields remaining, twice...

    Edit: 27 seconds, 4 shields...

You could use a program called Fraps.

I did. Needed one crate to get to it through the vents. Is that a picture of Mortal Monkey in the room?

A Long Way Down feels more like an abandoned early build of a proper mission than something that was intended for the Total Crap FM Contest. It is way better than most of the other missions from the same batch.

I recommend playing on Expert. Getting to the streets on Normal without any guards and locked doors is a little too easy. Expert is more of a challenge.

Finished Expert in 15 minutes with 1105 of 1170 loot.

crowemagnon was last active in 2016. I doubt they will reply. But maybe someone else can shed some light on the easter egg in A Long Way Down? I think that is a picture of the author in a suit.

Can anyone tell me where to find the key? NEVER MIND. I found it in the beginning area before reaching the sub.

There are only 2 keys in this mission, one opens a door the other opens a floor panel, are you sure you can't pick cargo locker open?

There are 5 keys that open the doors on the sub.

Sub? Do you mean submarine? There is no submarine in Long Way Down, are you sure your posting in the right thread?
