I wonder if that big one- the bouncer, is actually the toughest.

Looks like it could be a grenade launcher. I definetely don't want to mess with that.

I think the rosie one is probably the weakest one, as it only has a melee weapon so if you run fast enough and have the ammo you can take it down.

I agree the bouncer is probably the toughest. He looks the biggest, and has a rivet gun.

It is interesting to see how the designs for the enemies went from this:

    to this:

No offense to the artists, but thank goodness. To me that looks a little goofy, wheras the diving suit monsters are truly inspired choice for a boss.

The bouncer is the one with the drill. Rosie has the rivet gun.

In the Gamespot live event, they showed a different runthrough of the e3 demo..first they shot apart the turret instead of using speed boost...but later on they were actually fighting the Big Daddy... and at least back then, it was rapid firing 3 shots with the rivet gun and doing some nasty damage.

The bouncer might be manageable if you can slow it down or evade it... I kind of imagine you're screwed if you let it get close

Well that old one was when the game was going to be in a secret Nazi research facility. They would have been the ones who would be more willing to conduct serious mutation experiences to create actual monsters, while the citizens of rapture initially used it for peace.

It's still pretty neat to see the progression. They should release some of the concept art for that idea.

No, I agree it is very interesting. I hope once the games comes out they post all that stuff. I'm just glad it's gone in the direction it has.

Uponemandus, I think you have a slightly flawed interpretation of the after hours demo. They did use the speed boost to get past the turret, but then they went around to the other side and shot it (this is where, in the dev walkthrough the camera fades out). Later on, they do the same thing with the splicer irritant and run into the shop, but anger the big daddy (going too close? I'm iffy on how), causing the big daddy to open fire with his awesome burst-fire rivet gun. I agree that it was pretty cool. It's too bad the video was in the really tiny gamespot video window, because that's something I would like to see a bit better. On a side not, I think that one big daddy you posted pictures of has been cut given that there are only two models shown. Maybe that's wrong, but it seems likely to me.
Also, about the big daddy artwork, I think it is very cool. I really love these artwork progression things and look forward to seeing more sometime in the future. I wonder what they'll do next. I really like how the renders look, although the metal containers on their backs look a little bit off. Maybe the texture (I really hope I used that word correctly. If not, please forgive me.) doesn't quite seem to line up with the actual tank. On one of them, it looks like there are notches on the tank but they aren't actually modeled, so it looks a bit funny, but in general they look really great. Also, I was a bit surprised at the profile of the bouncer big daddy. He's proportioned a little differently than I expected. Really incredible artwork and renders!

I have a slightly flawed interpretation of everything

I hope the Daddy I posted hasn't been cut, they need the variety. I can't recall where, but last I heard there were still three versions. Nothing I've seen has contradicted that.

The absolute genious of the Big Daddy design is that we can only imagine what the horrific disfigured person inside looks like.

It's interesting how one of them is called the "Rosie" Big Daddy. Is that particular Big Daddy somehow attached to a specific Little Sister, named Rosie? Does one Little Sister become a special character?

I do agree that the final designs are much better than the early ones, and I'm glad they ended up as they did.

He's called Rosie due to his sunny disposition.

Especially on the Bouncer. From the side his proportions look comical (but I doubt I'll think that when I'm toe to toe against him in-game), but it makes it all the worse when you try to imagine a person inside there.

My guess is that big daddy is called "Rosie" because it has the rivet gun. Ever hear of "Rosie the Riveter"?

I just noticed that the bouncer-model big daddy is wearing converse shoes! Isn't he? I think that's very cool.

One of this first big daddies are equipped with a pair of tentacles, would this be a result of too much plasmids before becoming a protector?

Another thing is the rendered big daddy doesn't have any of his "eyes" lit up.
In the videos it shows him being green or red. Maybe gray is neutral.

Honestly I would imagine that there would be more than the types of Big Daddies that they have shown, so that way you have some surprises for when the game comes out. Also I would think that the Big Daddies would be somewhat varied, similiar to how the splicers are customized, where they may be the same type of Big Daddy.
See the two latest versions of the Bouncer model:

    and

they look incredibly similar to each other except for their weaponry and the tanks on their backs
