I'm stuck near the very beginning. The portal has been opened, and I have found a north key in front of a door in the area. Where do I go from here? None of the Mechanists seem exactly helpful . . .

I would not exactly call this a 'key hunt', but you do have to look closely for them. And this game, as you will soon see hevily relies on trigger events.
ok, the portal has activated, a bunch of haunts are chasing me everywhere, I can't find any weapons and where is this key? Very pretty effects, but it's kinda frustrating so far!![]()
Amen to that nicked.At least Island of Madness gave you the option of ghosting the enemies when you still had no weapons . . .
The key I found was in the cathedral where the portal was, you have to hang a right when you come in, and look at the floor in front of the door. Of course, at this point you have about 5 haunts after you, so get ready to run your ass off.
Still hoping for information on where to use that key . . .

I was able to look around at the beginning by locking the haunts in the chapel. Then, when I wanted to look around the inside, I got them to chase me then locked them out of the chapel. Try doing that.
So...the key is only there AFTER the haunts attack?

Anyway, now have 11 keys, but still can't get into
spoiler:the dungeons or the infirmary. I'm hoping these areas will help with the "get help" & "what went wrong" objectives.

This mission was one of the best. I actually helped beta test it and would like to help but I haven't played the final release and some things may have changed. I think it is safe to offer some advice though.There are two ways to get some peace from thespoiler:These guys really irritated me especially because I had no freggin weapons...or hardly any at the time.massive ammount of haunts that appear after the machine is activated.
1)spoiler:quickly grab the key off the floor in front of the locked double doors and run out behind the building to the right...the haunts will follow. Then go up the ladder and jump off the other side and run back in and open the double door inside to the right and lock it behind you. You should have just enough time if done right.
2)spoiler:Get all the haunts to follow you and jump up on one of the metal box things behind the right hand wall in the machine room...lob som cocktails at them. One cocktail can take out 3 or 4 of them at once.
Care to divulge how you got into any of the towers?
Also, to get to the weapons
spoiler:go to the dining hall (with two zombies, one patrolling, one stationary) there is a key near the barricaded doors. use the key to open the door to the kitchen. The mechanist in there will give you a key to a locked room on the second floor of the bunk house. After a couple more rooms, you'll find some equipment.
I have been in every tower but the SW and to get to the others you have to

There is actually only one place where it is hard to get past them.![]()
What MB said will get you started...after you pick up the key gospoiler:to the litchen. It is straight across from the dining hall like place you get the key off the floor. There is 2 or 3 undead roaming around in there.
Have 'killed' all haunts & zombies, have the weapons, found 2 secrets, read everything I can find & systematically searched on & around every body. Still can't get into any tower or the dungeons.
This is a beautifully-designed mission but I'm giving up on it - just sick to death of pixel-hunting for badly-placed keys.![]()
There is no key to the SW tower, it just opens at a scripted event.
After you've gone to the beacon tower and replace the fuse go back to the infirmary, then to the dungeons below the infirmary. There you will find a key to the SE tower.
