A humble Deus Ex music mix

UPDATE as of 13th Jul 2024:

Back in the day I made this mix of the MJ12 Laboratories background music (see original post quoted below). I see the link is broken, so here it is republished. Apparently the file was here on this new webspace since like 2010, but seems I didn't bother to link it anywhere.

Sometime between 2007 and 2009 I made another mix, from the DuClare Chateau conversation theme, which I apparently didn't publish (or maybe I did in another thread?). With this one I was more experimentative, as I also tried to add some new melodies, but it didn't go so well – probably that's the reason why I didn't publish it in the first place. Or maybe I was making another mix (I don't even remember what) and wanted to post them together, but I took a reeeeaally long break with it and a HDD crash eventually convinced me to give up. (Lately I've recovered that HDD, but I don't have access to it right now.) Regardless, as for the DuClare Chateau mix, here it is.

If you'd like to listen to it, please download it here!
Tell me if you like it or not.

64kbps is a little bit low quality; noticably worse than the OST, even to my useless ears.

You're right. I reencoded it to 128 kbps, and uploading it right now.
EDIT: It's done. The 128 kbps version is up.

There's a weird sound at 0:43. I can't describe it better than being a quick "whup". Is that in there on purpose?

Frankly, I really don't know which sound are you talking about.

Yup, there's a nasty little glitch there. Here's the snippet: http://rapidshare.com/files/37909658/glitch.mp3.html

Thanks, now I know. Just because nothing's wrong in my MP3, and that caused the misunderstanding. I downloaded the MP3 from the server, and I found that weird sound, so it seems that the MP3 has been damaged while I was uploading it. Now I uploaded again. Hope it's correct. Anyway, I don't understand why do MP3s damage so often, while other files damage so rarely. Or possible that I just don't notice the damage in other files? :S

I still listen to this song often.
As a heads-up though, your site seems to have perished.

I know, Ondaem's domain has expired. It's because an administration glitch though, he actually paid the check a month before they deactivated the domain. Ondaem sent them a complaint with the voucher check that proves that he paid. They could take the domain so quickly, but they hesitate to turn it back... But it will be back sooner or later.

That's why I have my domain names on auto-renew via credit card; and also I register them for multi-years at a time. Unless I don't really care if I keep them or not...

Nice, I'm a bit surprised, hearing this music for the first time... since I turned it all off in the game.

Dude, the DX music is an integral part of the whole experience. I minimize the music in a lot of games myself (especially these days, it seems) but DX just isn't DX without the soundtrack.

It's a tactical hindrance to me, breaks my concentration... especially when I know I've triggered something because the music changed. And having people yacking "in my head" whenever they please is bad enough (but at least somewhat necessary), but if anything the music breaks the mood for me and is completely unnecessary. It's good music, but unnecessary... music is great for games like DOOM because you're just there to blow shit up, but I take DX more seriously and I don't see JC as someone running around with music playing in his head, so I kind of don't want to hear it either.

I'm not slamming the music, it just isn't for me, and the fact that I can turn it down is the best part of it.

That's funny, I was thinking exactly the opposite: Doing away with music as a "tactical hindrance" is fine for games like Doom and Quake, because the only reason you're there is to shoot shit and the music can distract your focus or keep you from hearing the bad guys moving around on you. But DX is so much more than that. A lot of the cinematic effect is lost without the music, and in my opinion renders it a much less effective game.

    I'm definitely the opposite.
In Doom and Quake the music is great because it gets my adrenaline going, I don't have to worry as much about tactics because even if there is a surprise or an enemy I don't hear, he will get pasted by my guns and pumped reflexes... on the other hand in DX I want to hear everything that goes on, from people walking around to that security camera in the next room... I often locate things by their different sounds, so I know where the cameras are, where that next security terminal is, locations of laser tripwires, the various kinds of bots, what type of other enemy there is, all assessments made by recon from another room or in a vent or whatever. I guess if you have a good memory after playing before you don't need these sounds, but my memory is not very good and I can even forget what was in the room I was just in a few minutes ago.

Also music tends to get me into a fixated zone which is good for some things but kind of takes away my finesse and observation... it breaks my finer concentration basically and can lead to me doing stuff like blowing everyone away to get inside somewhere instead of going into a vent or something, but maybe I'm just ADD or something, I dunno.
