    Escapist interview with Jordan Thomas

"With BioShock still close to release, Thomas is reticent to talk about specifics of his work, even though it rests even more heavily on lighting theory. 'Suffice it to say that my section of the game is an attempt to generate a sort of surrealistic dread, leaning heavily on the sense that the player is on a stage, and some of the key tropes that people associate with the artificial, exaggerated atmosphere of a theater production are constantly active around you.'"

Kieron Gillen speaks to Jordan Thomas about lighting effects, level design and Bioshock.

I just came over here to post this article, it's really quite fascinating and I just can't wait to see how Jordan's level turns out. His talk about subtlety and experimentation is very intriguing, I hope it comes out in his work when we finally get to play the game.

This is the first time that I can remember someone on the Irrational team, posting news about an article here in the forum about Bioshock and beating us all to the punch.

I believe you're right. Both versions of the game must have gone gold by now. (Or at least the 360 version. If it's not done yet, the PC version must be very close.) So methinks the staff at Irrational are now taking a bit of a well-deserved breather.

There's a mild spoiler in the article, but it's somewhat vague so I'd say it's safe to read. The level that the spoiler describes sounds really intriguing.

    It most likely will:

Sounds interesting. We'll have to see how it works out, I think Thomas made an important observation in "the game is primarily a shooter". From what I've learned so far, shooting will be the our main aproach to enemies, rather than sneaking about, so I'm curious to see to what extent that will affect the way we perceive this level.

I'm sure the level rocks because of that very reason.

I knew it! I knew it! I knew it!...

Right from the beginning when I saw the first few pictures I knew they were going for the avant theatre atmospherics. It's pseudo-carnival just how I'd imagine it. Great job! Yes, I know I'm saying, "I told you so," but if you read my first post here you can see I hit it right in the head. Ah, my shameless arrogance!

I'm liking this idea that certain areas of the game are devoted to one art or craft indulged to the extreme.

It will. I've never jumped so often at stationary objects before.

well, tom, thanks for your kind answer.
(in contrary to my posts about gamecritcs)
i never thought that Bioshock will be another CallOfDuty or DukeNukem, still, your reply, - from one of the chosen ones who already played the game - stilled me a little more.
only 3 weeks to go !
