Haha, now that's what I'm talking about. I was really hoping they would put in on Steam so that I could actually give credit to the developers with the fullest satsifaction. Here in Poland I would have waited a good few weeks more to get my hands on it, and it would be long past holidays then. Actually I was going to get it "the other way" now and think about crediting the devs later. But you know how hard it is to pay for something you long since have finished away with. Now not only can I get it instantly, at the same time having a clear conscience as a PC gamer, I will also pay much less then I would have buying the retail version when it comes out in my country, here in Poland its like 10 dollars which is a lot given the economical status of most people here. Anyway, thanks to the devs(publishers rather I believe), they might well gain LOTS of additional customers this way.

Still looks like I'm going to have to wait until the 24th. I hope thats the worst of it. The Steam thing and all official releases give USA and Europe dates as if us Australians and people from Iceland don't exist.

it's 8.6 gb i think. steam download goin good between 200-400k.
you can still cancel any amazon order before it has been shipped but if you say your connection will take as long as the package go for the 4L off.

    from the manual:

    spoiler:
I'm Andrew Ryan and I'm here to ask you a question:
Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his own brow ?

No, says the man in Washington. It belongs to the poor.
No, says the man in the Vatican. It belongs to god.
No, says the man in Moscow. It belongs to everyone.

I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something
different. I chose the impossible. I chose...

    RAPTURE.

A city were the artist would not fear the censor.
Where the scientist would not be bound by petty morality.
Where the great would not be constrained by the small.
And with the sweat of your brow, Rapture can become your city as well.

strong stuff. I love it. reminds me of vincent price/hammer movies.

UPDATE: leaning seems to have been cut out.

Well between this, torrents and ToysRUs, Bioshock has to be the most leaked game since HL2.

I noticed that in the manual as well, tsk tsk. That might hurt sneak gameplay a bit.

Why would I want to download from Steam? My retailer will get the LE probably next Tuesday, which means I'm gonna hold it at Wednesday in my hands, which is still 2 days earlier than the Steam release (24th August). Apart from that, Steam updates often get released later and make trouble, not to mention that if Mod Tools get released, they won't work with the Steam version.
I'd only buy from Steam if it's a Valve game, otherwise NO!

all games I own on steam which are non-valve work with their respective mod tools AND mods. I live in austria, there is no shop to pick up the LE, it gets delivered via postal service on the Aug24th, meaning that I will get it soonest (it's a big package) on Aug29th from the UK and afaik it will require the DVD in the drive to play. so 2 reasons for steam. I can still make a physical backup via steam->backup->DVD

e.g. the id super pack -> i could get all my quake/doom3 mods to work with steam.
I even fired up the editor tools, seem to work.

Bloody hell, I had never known that was possible. Now I wonder if I should take a walk down steam-street.

Well I live in Austria too and I've preordered my LE from www.gameware.at, who claims they've ordered several thousand units and will get it next Tuesday/Wednesday. And I mean the Uncut version.

the steam backup creates .smi/d files with a steam.ico + autorun.inf + backup.exe inside a folder. you then burn it as an ISO-DVD (or CD).
when u insert the DVD/CD it automatically launches an install-window where you can select which of the games you want to restore. it then start steam if it is not already running and begins the install process.

i ordered there too but canceled after they only get the german limited.

I wonder how that would work since the data is contained in these Source bins (gcf I think).

doom3 is a normal doom3 installation inside the common folder.
it's not inside the usual steamapps subfolders.

Even if you backup in Steam it still won't actually let you play it unless you are logged in a valid Steam account that has the game registered as far as I know.

Steam is great. Cheaper too. $63 AU for me. I think I would have had to pay $70 retail IF I preordered and put down a $20 deposit. Plus I will have it downloaded preloaded on my hard drive by tomorrow.

More flexibility too I can go to any Internet cafe with Steam installed and play Bioshock using my Steam account. If I lose the CD key I'm fine. Don't need to hassle with rebuilding my PC and needing to reactivate the game.

Steam makes everyone pay for the games they play (or use a friends account) which means more money to developers which means better and more games.

as soon as you started up the game for one time with steam online you can go to offline mode and don't need an internet access any more. but it has to be registered to your account, of course. so no backup-disc sharing !
only problem i see is: what if steam goes down the drain in the future ?

    btw: bioshock preload: 48%

Okay not foolproof for a single player game but still as good an activation system as any other. It still requires me to trust someone with my user name and password limiting it to my friends, etc. as opposed to just seeding a torrent. Piracy will never be avoided only limited. That reminds me I have to go do some raping and pillaging on the NZ coast.

Steam will never go down the drain. It might be sold off and changed but what content you own and access through Steam will never disappear short of a New World Order.

    Steamy!

I wonder how their percentage split compares to retail.

I'm going to preload as a precaution, in the offhand chance that Gamestop manages to mess up my reservation.

    currently downloading at 12k/sec

Took me like 1½ hour to download the whole thing but im still a bit unsure if i should buy it from Steam or not... It is rather expensive + you dont get the box which can be nice to have + perhaps have to wait for patches to be released to Steam.. Hmmz...
