The rent is due - go rob a bank

It bugged me in T1 that Garrett had to steal an ancient trophy (the horn of Quintus) just to pay his ghetto apartment rent. This horn was worth how much exactly - hundreds of thousands? And now I've been playing FMs and noticing that some of the authors use this ridiculous objective as well - the rent is due so go and steal a few thousand coins You bet I want to be a landlord in the Thief universe, to receive thousands for shitty one room apartments with no water and electricity.

I've always gotten the feeling that it's not just ONE place he's paying rent on, but all his safe-houses - and whatever other operating expenses (bribes, etc) he incurs.

Not to mention the cost of equipment. Hell, one broadhead costs 25, so even if his rent is only a few hundred a month, his OpEx are huge.

Fence fee of course. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to find an not backstabbing fence?
Also it's a highly rare item everyone knowing a bit about the old city knows the horn.... so if they see it they will asume someone stole it and quite possible rat him out to the hammers who don't take kindly to graverobbing. Also other expenses like bribes, money spend while observing, money spend to get hold of old maps/ information etc... I guess poor Garret is lucky that he can make a living of thieving...

He had money left over and bought his first lockpicks, remember? He took on the job, not just for rent, but to also make up for not getting paid for the Bafford job AND having his fence die on him after trying to break him out of prison, remember? Pretty costly stuff, and he still had money left over. And what Sola' says is true: He's got safehouses in several districts.

I think one thing might even be more probable: He doesn't steal something big every day, so it must last for a couple of weeks. However, I definitely don't like overly unrealistic/unlogical objectives either. Be it the Clocktower affair in TDS or some of the "epic" FMs.

Maybe Garrett has a drug problem? An addiction to spice perhaps

Garrett doesn't seem to be the slow, lazy and hungry type.

Mission number twelveteen: Casing the Joint. Joint. heh.

    Objectives:
-Go to, uh, go to Taffin-Eleven, and uh, get some doritos, dude. Some doritos and get... ok.
-Don't get caught by the Watch. Taffin' Bulls.
-Fake a medical-spice perscription card. So, uh, you can get past, uh, past the uh, the Bulls.
-Get some cupcakes. And porn. Aaaand some doritos for the salad.

The only daylight FM I can remember is midday escape, but that doesn't seem right.

I swear there was a Circle Of Strain or some such back in ancient times.

Yeah I think "the rent is due" is just a garrettism, meaning he needs quick cash.

And don't forget... in Thief 2 one of the missions actually makes you rob something to REALLY pay your rent

Yep. A sub-standard job he's not happy about taking on for such a lame reason, since Truart's crackdown has made his profession difficult.

Except you don't actually pay the rent, because you spend all that money on equipment for the next mission...

The same could be said for every pre-TDS mission, no matter how many weeks go by in between, plus he always seems to know how much he'll get before he goes to any fence. There is no accounting for any living expenses, and we never know how much he got for the Horn of Quintus, but Garrett keeps all the money from the Bonehoard, etc. I hope that changes with T4.

I'm annoyed at the way in T1 he's on for the biggest job of his life from Constantine which is worth 100,000 gold pieces. Yet Garrett still has the requirement to scour the ruins for the sake of 2000 gold. Surely a trip over the wall into the part of the city swarming with the undead would encourage you to go in and out as quick as possible. Instead you have to spend ages hunting for pennies creeping around dark rotten old buildings with god knows what lurking inside, well I do anyway because I always seem to struggle to find the 2000 loot needed for The Haunted Cathedral and just wish I could get on with finding the talismans to get that 100,000 I've been promised.

If he'd been a smarter businessman (he's not), he'd have asked for money up front to cover his equipment needs, except, he doesn't have enough information about what it entails, at least with the Lost City. There'd hafta be a pride issue, or some bit about not keeping in touch with Vik/Con until he's got The Eye.

...not just an ordinary thief. I need an ARTIST.

Garrett... the MASTER thief. Anything else?

And after reading that Ramirez wanted to send thieves into the sealed Old Quarter to look for abandoned loot, surely Garrett would enjoy taking that from him as well. Anything to hurt the competition without killing them himself!

If we wanted to nitpick, it only makes sense that if Garrett indeed planned to retire on the 100k Constantine offered, why would he not want to get as much as possible before doing so? Seriously, even if you dont work hard at making your living, you still save as much as possible before retiring.
