Matthew has had a great idea - "a thread where users can post details of bargains they've spotted in shops / online."
Well we think that's a great idea, so that's what we'll be using this thread for.
Only use this thread for bargains, they can be online, or brick and mortar stores. However they cannot be eBay auctions, Criagslist ads, use affiliate links or anything like that.
Each post should be similar to this, however it isn't that strict, but keep it nice and clean.
If the bargain is an online store please only post stores that you have used so as not to end up with a load of dodgy sites!Location: United Kingdom
Shop: Tesco (link)
Item: C&C Kane's Wrath
Price: £12.72 (RRP £19.99)
If a deal has expired, or is on eBay or spam, then use the Report this Post function and we'll deal with it straight away.
<div style="font-size:16px;color:#ff0000;font-weight:bold;text-decoration: line-through">This thread is for DEALS ONLY. If you want to discuss the thread, any of the deals in it, or thank someone for saving you some <a href="http://www.ttlg.com/dave/bidet.mp3" style="color:#ff0000;text-decoration:underline;">dollary doos</a> then use <a style="color:#ff0000;text-decoration:underline;" href="http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=120567">this thread</a>.</div>
Any other posts will be deleted.
This thread will be regularly pruned of old posts.
Good idea, Matthew!

It's like any sale - most things are rubbish but there is such a wide selection with some interesting choices you're likely to find something.

Shop: Target, possibly other big box stores with budget PC game racks
Item: Fritz Grandmaster Challenge III (Fritz 8)
Price: 9.99
This is a rebranded version of Chessbase's Fritz 8, fully patched. Yes, Fritz is up to 11, and Chessmaster is much prettier. But whereas Chessmaster will condescend to my level, Fritz more convincingly adjusts to my skill level. Personally, I find the most value in this self-adjusting "friend" mode, and the game analysis modes that point out blunders and subtle turns in gameplay. I can play a game at my level without feeling like a dope, and then see where I can improve. No other software does this as well as Fritz. Ten bucks. And, being a chess title, it is likely one of the most ignored items on the shelf.
Location: USA, primarily west coast
Shop: Fry's Electronics, likely other stores
Item: Majestic Chess (ValuSoft)
Price: $4.90
This might be a little difficult to find, but is an excellent budget replacement for the Chessmaster tutorials. It has the flair of an old school Bioware RPG, complete with a fantasy storyline that doesn't take itself too seriously. Surprisingly, it doesn't suck. When you're done learning the basics here, and bored with prettily colored boards and ready to up your skill level, buy a chess book and install Fritz 8.
Online play with other humans is available everywhere for free. I prefer FICS (freechess.org) and QueenAlice.com. Or, if you're serious, you'll like that Fritz 8 includes 3 months registered on the popular PlayChess.com servers.
Far Cry on Steam for $8.99 USD.
Edit: at second glance, it's only a $1 drop in price. Oh, well.

About 4 or so copies in DVD reissue cases. Not deal of the year, but not bad. Great bookstore besides, practically the only used bookstore around.
I forgot Half-Price Books sometimes sold games. I should check out the one near Tri-County here in Cincinnati.
Far Cry is legitimately free now, mate. Link

At my neighborhood Target, it looks like they may be permenantly clearancing the bargain games to get rid of them. Everything is going for 4.98 or somesuch, so if you've been waffling, you may want to just go for it. I've already mentioned the professional-grade Fritz 8 chess engine I mentioned earlier in the thread, and today picked up Darkstar One and Diner Dash 2 (the latter for the gf). You may also be tempted by CivIII, GTA Vice City, or Divine Divinity. Or just get a simple game for the kids.
I've just done a few training missions in Darkstar One, and I'm pretty excited, this is a current-gen space trader/fighter game along the lines of Elite, or perhaps a sort of lightweight Morrowind-in-space. It appears to have just the right amount of simplicity: mouse or joystick controls (with mouse feeling pretty natural, but I long for a flightstick), and a basic trading model no more complicated than Elite's. Bonus: it also seems to have a plot.

For those of you waiting for the megapatched version of The Witcher:

Red Orchestra
$5 on steam
Offer ends 9th of June 2008 (normally $20 apparently)
This might actually force me to get steam - though is red orchestra worth the punishment of having to have steam? :P

Steam isn't that bad. But if you really have a problem with it, then no. RO is full of assholes now.

it still has the dreaded online activation but the limited installs have been dropped recently.
