I just watched that YouTube video. Definitely way more explicit than before. I'd have to see it in the context of the entire game to make up my mind about it; I find it more honest (it's like the sex equivalent to guys getting shot just clutching their chest and falling over vs. blood, pain etc. when someone gets shot), though. Perhaps this is just me, but it makes the act look rather demeaning both to Nico and the prostitutes.

It's meant to. Listen to the stuff he says. It's pretty cutting and pretty dark.

A friend has GTA IV, he's disappointed. His main complaint is the scripting of missions, here's an example:

He got a mission where he was supposed to chase some guy on a motorbike. The mission was scripted so there wouldn't be too much traffic, but on one try (he had problems finishing the mission) the guy crashed into a car. Now, in previous games, this would result in emergent gameplay - the guy would fall off the bike and you could finish him off. But not GTA IV. Here, the guy on the motorbike rammed the car with the force of a tank, as his route was a completely scripted event.

My housemate has it now for his 360 and from what I have seen I will echo the reviews for the most part.

The only gripe I have right now is that some of the textures are pretty poor, even on the road in some places.

For you Aja, the cars have a more realistic feel to them. You can not throw them around corners with casual application of the handbrake and they tip and roll etc. I have not had enough play time to get used to this yet and hope it does not spoil the fun of really speeding about for a laugh.

The big bonus is that the cutscenes are now worth watching for more than finding out what you are doing next. They are far more cinematic, helped by the better graphics and lighting of course.

Having a hell of a lot of fun with GTA4 . Just spent a few hours exploring the city with a few friends in a chopper before that comradery eventually descended into anarchy and an 8 man running battle through the city streets.

I am cracking the fuck up at my friend Bill...He went to pop in his brand new GTA IV (which he has been frothing at the mouth about) for the first time, and RED RING OF DEATH<. LOL, his dumb-ass went out and bought a core unit 360 w/his rent money because he couldn't wait for Microsoft to fix his Elite edition for free. Have fun playing it in a box in an alley somewhere.

That's brutal. I've had my copy of GTA4 all day just begging me to take a crack at it, but I'm waiting until tonight. I'm almost glad my system went RROD a couple months back, at least I don't have to worry about that anymore.

It's amazing how much airplay these deranged lunatics get.

Er, I've never experienced the same "emergent gameplay" in GTA games as you describe - in fact, I recently got irked with San Andreas because of the mission where you have to chase the Mexican buttraper on your motorbike and it doesn't matter how close you get to him, how many times you shoot him or anything, he'll always take off (faster than is possible for the motorbike) and survive the shots (more than any HP any other NPC has). Similarly I'm getting really fucked off with this mission to kill the idiots on top of the train, I can get down to one but then I run out of time and they go off map.

Yeah that train mission was one of the most frustrating parts of San Andreas. My copy of GTAIV is currently on it's way to me, I can't wait to play it. Although I am glad to here that the cinematic stuff has been amped up (as I thought the more cinematic side of SA was very impressive), I hope it remains a game that is fun to just pick up and dick around in, because this has been the sole reason I have played Grand Theft Auto games more than any other recently.

That one annoyed the hell out of me too. I think the problem is that if you get too close, Smoke's firing up at a steep angle and the targets are partially obstructed. So try moving away a bit to give him a clearer view.

the ones i had more trouble with was the police chase! shooting inside the car and all, specially with the ps2 controller!
there was a similar one, with the russians. that was annoying too.

Those SA missions were pretty easy for me. I had a bit of trouble (read 3+ reloads) on one of the robbery missions w/Queen Bitch.

I damn near pulled an all-nighter last night without even realizing it, this game is that good.

Only one issue really worth griping about so far: Loading of interiors/exteriors is strange sometimes. Cars and people seem to reset during mission transitions on occasion, resulting in a 'ghost town' until you turn a corner, not to mention losing whatever vehicle you left parked in the given sector.

Sometimes this happens in interiors as well, where you can hear patrons talking but can't see them after a brief appearance when you first enter. I watched a worker mopping the diner floor and several patrons simply blink out of existence.

These have been rare, but frustrating occurrences.

So cars disappearing remains one of the biggest frustrations of GTA.

Me too. My only console is the last gen XBOX, and I have no plans to rectify that.

GTA IV is on the front page of CNN right now. And, surprisingly, the article has nothing to do with puritanical backlash.

This just in: GTA4 is pretty damn amazing. I gotta get back to playing it in a minute so I'll just make a checklist of things of note concerning the gameplay:

    • the driving is hella loose. It feels more like Driver than the earlier GTA games. Spin-outs happen easily if you're careless. Becoming a master wheelsman will take more practice than in earlier games.
    • the on foot action is improved. You can lean against walls to take cover/shoot around corners. It feels like Rockstar learned a lot from making The Warriors because roof-top chases and such are more fun now. The mantling and jumping over fence animations are really nice. You can climb ladders too. You can swim, but you can't dive. It also feels like R* have learned a few things from Saint's Row.
    • more interaction with the environments. More minigames, like bowling, darts, minigolf(I think). Also, there's a TV in your room where you can chill out and watch reality-shows, cartoons(looks like they were made by a decent Flash-animator), commercials, etc.
    • it seems to be less linear than earlier GTA games. I'm about 10 missions in and so far I've already had the choice of either killing or saving one character. Dunno if it'll have an impact on how the story unfolds.
    • I really dig the extent of detail R* have put into the Russian neighbourhood which is your stomping grounds for the beginning of the game. There are Russian businesses, clothes-stores, even a Russian radio-channel which plays only Russian songs.
    • Niko Bellic is a wonderfull main character.

As for the story I will only say that it starts of slower than in the other games, only after a few missions does the plight of the main character becomes clear.

Is anyone playing the multiplayer btw? How is it? I'm seriously considering getting a XBL Gold account if it's good.

I also have yet to try multiplayer since the single player has been so engrossing.

My copy of GTA4 came with a '1-month free' XBL gold card, but I don't know if that was only in the US version. Either way I allready have a gold account so if you want the subscription code I'll PM it to you.

I do find the driving a little slippy. After coming from Burnout Paradise, the cars in GTA4 almost feel like they are on ice, spinning out easily.

I agree with everything henke said, and I have to add that getting drunk in GTAIV is the funniest thing I've experienced in a videogame in a long, long time.

this cocaine makes me feel like I'm on this multiplayer

I just spent an hour battling it out with 3 other bad-2-da-bone urban warriors on the streets of LC in a good old fashioned deathmatch. I've been in grenade chucking matches in the junkyard. I've taken out a gangsta with a Uzi in a Beemer using nothing but my 9 milli. With my bazooka I've blasted SUV's storming at me at 90mph and had them do flaming sommersaults in the air to come crashing down behind me. I'm utterly delighted.

It might well be that I haven't played any form of multiplayer for a year or so but this shit is amazing. Fuck singleplayer, I'm playing mp from now on. Everyone who has this needs to get on it now. We should play as a team or something, yo! I'll be sitting my ass in front of the X-Box for the weekend playing GTA4 10:00-22:00 (GMT +2) saturday and sunday, unless real life gets in the way. My nick is "Henrk Hermans". Add me. Let's play.

MAD PROPS to heretic for hooking a brother up with a month of free XBL Gold
