The reason is that the original executable is wrapped in a securom protection which cannot be changed. You have to unwrap the executable to be able to modify it. The goal isn't to crack the protection, but to update the display abilities of a 10 year old graphics engine.

:Edit: Missed the part in the readme and the posts about the exe, my bad
I ended up getting a different size for shock2.exe. "shock2.exe (2908160) not found, but found 281618 bytes". It's 2.3 and straight from the cd. How could exe's differ.

So uh, is there any mods that can make the menus match the game resolution? Thief II had a fix like this which works great.
If you mean DDFix then it does work with System Shock 2, too.
There was a Thief fix that would stop the resolution from changing everytime you went into the main menu or looked at the map. Was wondering if I could do the same thing with SS2. I already have the gameplay at a custom resolution.
DDFix is that fix which removes that annoying resolution changing when you view your objectives or map.
Did that glitch ever get fixed where the rotating model of a particular inventory item (when you query it in the MFD) is invisible? I never heard back about it and it's the only reason I hesitate to use the mod.
Doesn't seem to have been. Is it important?
Important enough to sacrifice smooth shadows and pure undithered colours for?
Could you be more specific? It doesn't sound like a big bug, but what is it?
So the grenade launcher icon goes missing with DDFix. Interesting.
Yes and other item icons are missing if you use DDFix and view them in inventory mode, too.
Might be a colour palette thing.
So for a 16:10 widescreen, is 100 the proper FOV for Thief? Or do I want something less/more?
100%.
100% is the correct FOV regardless of your resolution, unless you want to purposefully mess with the FOV.
100 percent? Don't you mean 100 degrees?
Or does the widescreen mod (which I haven't actually tried yet) have some weird percentage-based FOV config?
No, I definitely mean 100 percent.
The fix automatically calculates the correct FOV, and then asks you to input a percentage of that FOV. 100% will always be whatever is appropriate for the aspect ratio.
According to the patch's author, anyway. I don't have a widescreen monitor to test such resolutions on.
Nameless is correct. I have a 16:10 (1680x1050) monitor and 100 is the value that I used. If you want to change the FoV to something other than what the game was programmed at, then put a value other than 100, but 100 works (and looks) great.
I'm getting "shock2.exe (2908160 bytes) not found, but found 250438 bytes, skipping...", it's 2.3 installed from the cd without any modifications. Do I really need to apply the no-cd patch to get the correct file-size, plus where can I find it?
Info on my exe:
Filename: shock2.exe
Version: 2.3
File size: 250438
Modified date: 2000-02-18 21:47:40
MD5 hash: 342f3214007ca3e5b577d156729c189f
CRC32 hash: 49B496C2
It's the untouched EU version. I'd love to use the widescreen patch since I'm getting tired of the 1024x768 on my widescreen monitor, if anyone knows a solution on how to run the DarkWidescreen, please share it with me.
Thanks!
I got a simliar error but then I scrolled up in the command window and saw that it had patched my .exe already higher up in the dialog. Also, have you already applied ddfix or not?
