Even country has its moments. Look at the "In the Reins" EP that Iron and Wine did with Calexico. That's something I'd like to see a bit more of.
The older country western music is fine with me. The new nashville sound is like cookie cutter versions of crap. Dolly Pardon, Johnny Cash, and many more are fine.
I seen Vienna Teng at the Bumbershoot in Seattle a few years ago and she is an excellent song writer/singer. Makes you wonder how they pick who gets to go to the big show.

Ok, these guys may have unseated Boards of Canada as my favorite group. Glitch-folk that's more interestingly written than Psapp, and less unhinged than Animal Collective. Really impressive stuff.

Dude, part of what makes Animal Collective interesting to listen to is the fact that they are unhinged.
Didn't mean to sound disparaging. I like both Psapp and Animal Collective, I was just trying to provide a frame of reference.
Wasn't trying to invalidate your comment at all, bro, it's just my opinion that Animal Collective without the insanity is just... well, as boring as watching wax pooling at the bottom of a candle.

When Pitchfork first started championing HEALTH last year I typed HEALTH into google, and couldn't find the band on the first two pages. I typed "HEALTH band", still nothing. And finally "HEALTH music", with no results. Haven't thought of them since, but I do love Liars so maybe I'll start up the search again.
The important lesson here is not to name your band after a word which is virtually unsearchable.
PS - Azeda Booth! They're from Calgary and they sound like girls! (but they're really boys)

The Breeders - German Studies
-Off of 'Mountain battles' which still sits firmly atop my best of '08 list.
Didn't know the Breeders still existed, even though I have an early nineties album by them... *rummages through the CD box* ...ah, here it is, "Last Splash" from 1993 ... loved that cannon ball video! Anyway, interesting. I'll look out for the new album.
I love the Breeders. They sound a hell of a lot more like the Pixies than Frank Black/Black Francis's stuff.
That said, they weren't very productive after Last Splash, releasing one album '02.
Maybe Deal's art suffered when she kicked and she was reinvigorated by the Pixies tour, who knows.
Either way they are back with Mountain Battles, and great as ever IMO.

I knew the Breeders were still around because of that Pixies documentary/mini-revival that came out not too long ago. I remember a time in my life when I thought the Pixies were the greatest band of the time and the start of a whole cultural revolution, then they disappeared and Nirvana stole all their thunder...
And speaking of major influences on Nirvana, I'm currently listening to: Leadbelly Ain't it a Shame
Black Lips - Lock and Key
I still think they are, kind of sad maybe but oh well.
I play them so often my 4yo knows most of their songs by heart.
If you like some of the earlier americana stuff R Crumb put out a comp of damn near impossible to find material from the 20's and 30's called 'The Stuff Dreams are Made Of'.
It's amazing, and much easier than searching these gems out on your own, though maybe not as rewarding.
