yes, the fan mission needs to be installed already. T2MP cannot detect FMs itself. If you have a thief 2 1.18 install with t2mp and darkloader set up to that directory, then just install an FM through darkloader and when you next launch t2mp, you can alt tab out and should be able to host with the FM.
ok so heres my findings after trying few more things.
-if i install the fm with darkloader, run thief via darkloader, it goes to the blackscreen issue.
-if i install the fm with darkloader, run thief via darkloader, then go to multiplayer window and start mission 1, samething blackscreen issue but with additional error window poped up lol.
both methods will not show FM or option "none" in the drop down menu for starting mission. i have heard people saying .fam is not loaded or incorrect, or to use the new darkloader so i'll be trying that.
Mission 1? By that do you mean thief 2 mission, Running Interference? I think when you install an FM, it breaks thief's ability to play from mission 1 but I could be wrong about this.
Does sound like either something is not set up properly or you are having a compatibility issue. Are you able to load thief 2 and go to a mission when you use darkloader to return thief to its original state?
And crazy thought, have you tried loading thief after installing an FM through the exe or a shortcut, instead of hitting "play thief" within darkloader?

I just tried loading a thief install with an FM installed and when I go to the host screen, I see the mission selected. (See screenshot for reference below) In fact, it's the only item within the list. What do you see when you go to the host screen?
Does it work for you guys? I can start server on my PC, but the client cannot join in LAN (every other game is work on LAN in MP except this.
When the laptop is the client it says: Join failed: COM initialization failed (80040154) >>> PC doesn't get any error
When laptop is the server: Host Failed: COM initialization failed (80070005) >>> PC cannot join of course.
Server browser doesn't work. Tried to join with LAN and the with the normal IP address (port 5198 is forwarded)
Single Player works perfect. Same game, same files. I tried to reinstall the MP patch, but nothing changed. Any help would be great, I would like to play it with my child in LAN.

Thank you for your reply. Meanwhile I tested it with a friend on net and it worked perfectly. So the problem is in my Laptop. (For example Hexen2 also crashes at starting)
I don't know it's matter or not, but my Laptop uses WinX, my PC uses Win7. Tried to set the compatibility, but the result didn't change.
So how would I go about getting this to work? Which version of NewDark do we have to get? And using Hamachi, what do I have to do to start a game and to join?

Please note, you'll be using Tafferpatcher twice in order to get it to work. Don't tick the DDFix box on your first use. I didn't cover that very clearly in the guide.

Hey there, I'm trying to get things working on both Steam and Original CD Release version. Followed instructions but unfortunately multiplayer window never shows up. There are actually two instances of game executable running. I'm on Win 10. Any ideas?
UPD: So, for some strange reason Build 215 works fine. I guess, I'll stick with it. So what's the problem with 218 though?

I had a similar issue following that guide. The game ran fine, but there was no sign of a multiplayer window. I will try again with build 215 soon
Edit: Tried with build 215. Installation appeared successful, gave me a multiplayer window, and all that. Problem: When I attempt to host a game, the moment it should take me to the mission's objectives screen, the entire thing hard crashes. Any ideas what could be causing that?

Edit 3: Alright, after some significant time spent trying to figure out how this works, I think I may have to give up. How does one actually connect to a server (using hamachi or otherwise)? I am hosting, I have the port forwarded, I am in a hamachi network with a friend. He tries to connect with the hamachi ipv4 address, the connection times out. Every time. Any ideas? Are we stupid?

I'm not sure why folks are using 215. The latest version of the patch is 218 and I think it would be best to use the latest version.
I know this is several months late but here goes. Amorphous:
For the Christmas holiday a friend came over and we played around with hosting a server. We had some trouble getting it to start at first (see below*)... Main thing is making sure you both are connected to a hamachi group, then the host needs to give their hamachi IP to the client player. The client player needs to put that hamachi IP into the manual connection feature of the T2MP window, after the host has set up the session.
Once both players are connected, you should hear a loot grabbing sound. (sounds like you just picked up gold or other valuables)
*We were getting the time out thing as well but I think our first mistake was us not both being on hamachi at the start. Also, if one of you is timing out with the other, try flipping who hosts and who is the client. That seemed to work when we had the time out issue. Then later, after we refreshed our games and made sure we were connected with hamachi, we switched again who hosted and it worked that time. And the correct IP is the IP formatted like 25.xx.xxx.xx , in hamachi.
It might also be which version of hamachi you are using that could cause a problem but I don't know that for sure, just throwing it out there as a possibility. (I've got Version 2.2.0.607; "LogMeIn Hamachi")
As for crashing, I'm uncertain whether that is a game to system issue, or if it's due to how the multiplayer patch is set up and the mission that is installed. Some more details would be welcomed, such as what system set up do you have (t2mp + ddfix, windows version, etc) and what mission were you trying to play (OM or FM), etc.
Finally, on another topic:
Do we have any news on NewDark having the source code released, or any kind of peep from the NewDark developers regarding thief 2 multiplayer? So reading back through old posts, I got that really all that can be done, without having the source, is making improvements to the existing T2MP version for T2 1.18. I wouldn't even know what improvements we could make to it, or how to modify it. Also reading through these old posts again I saw that Hound was looking into the code at one point but not a lot had been said and the latest posts have been regarding troubleshooting.
Of course, the other thought would be that Le Corbeau or whoever could just take Tos' code and try to implement it into NewDark themselves, which I know has been suggested by demagogue in this thread. I know some communication was sent off to the french forum regarding the patch but I haven't heard anything further.

In my guide I mentioned to use version 1.1.1 (I think it was) because it ran the fastest for me and gave me the best look in the game. Newer versions made the game look worse and more laggy for me, probably had something to do with the widescreen version and/or ddfix not working well together with the multiplayer mod.
About the other thing; I really hope as well to see multiplayer integration in NewDark, but there has been no news about if someone is working on it. At least not to my knowledge.
Still enjoying Thief MP to this day but a lot of missions (even OldDark ones) just don't work well.
Personally I used 215 because 218 simply didn't work at all. No multiplayer window, no functionality of any kind. Just ran as if I hadn't installed anything new.
As for the methods, it sounds like we were almost there. The only problem being that my friend and I just couldn't connect to each other. We weren't doing anything wrong. I will try again with someone else now that I know the method was theoretically sound.
Edit: Confirmed, it does work. Multiplayer speedrunning achieved. I had to specifically check that t2mp.exe was allowed through windows firewall.
