General Fan Mission Review And Discussion Megathread

In this incredibly talented fan mission community we have a wealth of fantastic missions to play - and I often find myself playing a FM and thinking "(insert thing) is great about this FM - I wish more had things like it" or basically just wanting to share a funny screenshot of a situation that I came across or even just to kill some time talking about FM's in general - so with the permission of Nightwalker and Pavlovscat I dub this basically our "water cooler" discussion area for everything Fan Mission related.

Some things we can choose to talk about in this thread include:

    * Your thoughts on a recently played fan mission
    * Features you liked about certain fan missions
    * Your favorite fan mission moments
    * Thief Porn (screenshots of beautifully made fan missions or screenshots in general)
    * Constructive criticism about fan missions or things that bug you in general. Please limit this to maturely worded discussion and do not resort just to slagging on a FM or author - and keep it civil! No name calling or anything else of that sort - though wouldn't expect anything like that from this community.
    * Basically any general chat about fan missions that have been completed or even anticipation for upcoming fan missions!

Please do not discuss the following here:

    * Bug reports - obviously those do not belong here.
    * Gameplay problems or hint seeking - please do not ask for completion tips on certain FMs - please refer to the fan missions thread that has already been created so that the author and others may better find your question to help you.
    * Dromed issues or technical support getting the game running.
    * Anything else that isn't general chat related.

Basically - picture yourself sitting around with a bunch of like minded fan mission fanatics discussing random thoughts about fan missions of the past, present and future - thats what we're going for here. And have fun with it!

The latest FM I completed was Burglary in Blackbrook. A simple and easy mission in a huge Cathredal. Loads of fun, except when having to run back and forth through all the corridors to find something or other.

Before that, I tried playing through Keeper Of The Prophecies...again. And gave up...again. I just don't like it. It feels unfinished to me.

I also played the TAC entry The Tower. Talk about squeezing content into a small space. A great mission.

Heist Society is also one of the top missions in my books.

Keeper of the prophecies never really clicked for me either - so I know what you are saying there.

The tower was an excellent mission - and like you said, tons of content stuffed into a small space - I was amazed with what the author did with the space they had to work with.

I also replayed The Burricks Head Inn (Vintage Edition) not too long ago - and the sepia toned look and 20th century feel really makes that mission stand out. I like when authors go back and make a few changes to old classic FM's to breathe new life into them.

I was trying to remember a mission the other day that had guards running around with one shot pistols that they would drop after being fired - but I cant remember which one it was. If I discover it was in the same set of missions as the ones that have the guards that shoot sword laser bolts at you - forget it. Those missions kicked my ass relentlessly.

There were guards with pistols in the hotel in T2X. Is that what you're thinking of?

Just my opinion here, but this "megathread" concept really defeats the purpose of having a proper threaded message board. The point of having individual threads with their own topics is to focus the conversation and discussion a bit (and I suppose to make it easier to search for information in the future). There really should be separate threads for "favorite fan missions" or "thoughts on Mission ABC" or "screenshots of beautiful missions."

Not telling anyone what to do, just expressing my views here. Try to picture this thread after a month or two, and you'll probably agree that it could potentially just be a big sloppy mess.

You are probably correct, and thanks!

@ Brethren: I don't see any of those kinds of threads being made either, really. This is just basic fan mission chat about whatever is on the mind of the fan mission players in any particular day - if you arent interested then please feel free to create your own thread on a specific topic and I'll be more than happy to post in it.

I myself will find it more than interesting to go back and read pages of discussion on random FM's. If someone has a certain FM question or something like that - it doesnt go here anyway. I think you may have missed the point of it.

Other than "please help me with (insert mission here) im stuck" style threads - I don't see any general discussion really at all that is solely fan mission centered. I'm not stealing any thunder.

I think folks are much more likely to jump into a thread about whatever random thing they'd like to post in order to get something off their mind than to go through the trouble of making an entire thread just for an offhand comment or a screenshot. Just trying to be realistic.

It's a bit of an experiment and if it gets too long or out of control, we can just lock it up.

Is that the small one with a single building with 4 (5?) floors and an elevator? I think I played that one several years ago. I felt like a detective out of an Agatha Christie book.

I'm not familiar with a mission with zip guns, but I'm very familiar with The Rebellion Of The Builder missions. I played those about 2 weeks ago. They're loads of fun for veteran players, but they're also total cheesefests. Do not expect to be treated fairly while playing them, especially in the last mission.

There's a set of FM's that I'm debating with myself whether I should play again or not...Calendra's Legacy. IIRC, the first mission is an awesome town mission with an optional crypt full of traps and puzzles, and the third mission is a decent city mission in the snow, but the second mission is...bizarre. There was something I found very negative about the second mission, but I can't remember what exactly...and that's the kicker. Should I replay it just so I can relive a bad day in Thief?

Funny enough I had just downloaded CL as well and was debating on going through it again. I don't remember much about any of the missions due to it being so long since I've played them so I'd also like to hear some opinions on it.

I've played (I think) every fan mission that has been released at one time or another and have even managed to ghost a small chunk of them completely - but that mission set completely destroyed me. I'm no where near a hardcore ghoster by any means - but I quickloaded more than three dozen times on the first mission after being killed before finally giving up and skipping to the second - then the same result.. repeat for all of them. Crazy, but obviously alot of work went into them and I can respect that.

Yeah, thats the one. Its definitely an interesting spin - I enjoyed the music that was chosen for the mission very much - but then again I'm a fan of literature from that time period as well.

My opinion is that CL is worth playing for the first mission. It's what comes afterwards that is up for debate.

With the exception of CL, I am at a bit of an impasse in regards to FMs. The only FM I have played and not beat is Equilibrium, but beyond that I do not know if there are any good FMs out there that I've missed. I'll have to do some digging in the archives and see what I find.

I don't believe I've finished that one either - I usually get my behind handed to me by one of the opponents there sooner or later - or I can never find the last one to dispose of him.

I've been going back and playing some old favorites on higher difficulty settings lately to see what I've missed.

One thing I really liked about heist society is that the readable tells you exactly what the changes are (AI changes, loot, secrets, starting location, etc) before you choose your difficulty. It'd be nice for FM authors to include this in every FM so that we know to go back and play a different difficulty if the experience is different (the content portion).

Wow, you and I don't see eye to eye on that FM at all! I think 'Midnight In Murkbell' is one of the best missions ever made; including all FMs & OMs. The first and third missions are great as well, but the second is the gem of that mission pack.

I love seeing how folks differ on certain FM's - I know that a few of them that are almost universally praised here I cant even stand to play

Then again, I love some that are not that popular - so there you go.

It is interesting how Thief FM's has developed into attracting distinct play styles. Personally I am not a big fan of ghosting but I understand why some hate playing any other way.

One of my favorites was "Durant" because of brilliant way the author allowed the use of a haunt as an ally to take out enemies. One could actually eliminate everyone in the first part of the mission without to even blackjack with use of a trap. It was just humorus fun. Evidently I am in the minority because Durant never got great scores by players. The fact that there are so few missions that are made this way is actually a good thing. If it were done often it would get old.

I am in the first phase of learning dromED. In a year or so I hope to build and release my first mission. I am curious as to just what people like and what play styles they can't stand.

I get the impression that Ghosters can't stand using a blackjack or any violence in any way. Should it be a requirement to allow both styles of play in a mission? What if I made a mission where ghosting was only available on easy and blackjacking was required on expert?

Usually, it is done the other way around. Ghosting is considered Expert play & blacking jacking is considered easier, so it ends up being allowed for Normal difficulty. I don't mind the option to ghost, but most times I prefer to blackjack everyone. I understand that many consider ghosting to be the ultimate play style, but I would prefer to see ghosting optional on Normal at least.

That being said, I don't mind having to ghost parts of a mission if I get my blackjack later.

I agree, as it is usually harder to Ghost than not, it should be required on the higher difficulties rather than the other way around.

I have yet to see a mission that gives you an optional hidden objective if you complete the mission without getting seen, dealing damage or receiving damage. It could pop up in the stats afterwards. That would practically be Ghosting, with the exception of property damage which wouldn't be detected this way. I think that would be cool, although I don't know how easy/hard it is to set up in Dromed. Plus what if the objectives required you to kill or deal damage, then it would suddenly become complicated.

But to keep the thread on topic, I generally like missions like CL that provides the possibility to Ghost successfully. I always try to Supreme the missions also, sort of a hardcore version of Ghost, but that is usually not considered by authors.

The "official" ghosting rules require that ghosting be done on Expert so I don't think this would appeal to the serious ghosters out there but I guess it would force players who normally played on a lower difficulty level to play on expert perhaps.

    Ghosting

Let me put it another way. What if I made a mission where to succeed you could not have any unconcious bodies discovered by enemies? Bodies would have to be hidden and it could be designed that in doing so would be harder than just simply ghosting through the area.

What if I made a mission where on expert mode one would have to knock out a particular guard in a well lit area without disturbing the others? On easy mode one would not have to knock out the guard. Ghosting would be required on easy and knocking out the guard would be the only knockout allowed on expert.

Would elite ghosters be put off by this?

First let me just say that I like both of those ideas and personally I would find that kind of challenge very enjoyable. As for whether other serious ghosters would be put off by this I would say that it depends on a couple of things. If the player's goal is to ghost the mission and you set up circumstances that make it impossible to ghost (like ko'ing a guard in a well lit area surrounded by other guards with no way to achieve that objective and remain hidden) then I would think they would be put off by this. But not all missions are ghostable.

On the other hand, ghosting rules allow for "breaking" the ghost when doing so is required by mission objectives but usually that would be in a situation where the only thing that breaks the ghost is the actual completion of the objective. For example, if the objective is to knockout a particular guard then the ghost is not technically broken since that is a necessary action to complete the mission. But, if the mission is designed in such a way that it is impossible to knockout that guard without alerting other guards, then that does break the ghost and the mission is therefore not ghostable.

I like ghosting but I also like playing other styles so I am not put off by a mission that is not ghostable. I might be disappointed but if the mission is fun and challenging and the story engaging I will enjoy it just as much, even if it can't be ghosted.

I hope this answers your questions. Any other ghosters out there feel free to clarify anything I may have left out here.

I am replaying 2006 missions for my reviews right now including missions 8 - 10 from the Haddur series: The Dream of Tyrus, Retribution & Guardmen of Haddur. Just to get a feeling for the series, I went back & replayed the first seven missions. I forgot just how creepy, scary these missions were. Turi is a master of atmosphere. These missions use plain stock textures, so they have a very TDP feeling to me. The architecture is basic, but the missions have good game play. Has anyone else played these recently?

here are a couple of things that have been bothering me while playing FMs for quite some time now...

the lack of light switches! I believe every electric light should have a switch somewhere, whether it's in the room by the door, next to the light itself, or at a control panel at a guard station nearby. it has to be expensive keeping all those lights on all the time, right?

sinks and tubs filled with water! I don't know if it's supposed to give the feeling that someone just stepped away, but I find myself wondering how long the water has been sitting there getting cold... how it's going to drain, and who brought it up in the first place?

The first is for gameplay reasons: torches and gas lamps can be doused, and electric lights cannot. If every electric light had a light switch, then you could plunge the entire mission into pitch blackness and remove all challenge.

I've wondered about the baths and sinks myself, but... it's traditional!
