T2 FM Released: Mine Affairs 3/08/2009

A "gold" version of this mission has been released as part of a mission pack in this thread:
    http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=131383

    Hello peoples,

I am very proud to present to you all, a new FM by none other than the one and only myself! It is a continuation of the story in Darkstone mine. I hope you all find it enjoyable and entertaining. I tried to put some effort into the story, and readables. Perhaps you'll be able to figure out everything that's happened in the back story!

I originally intended this mission to be in a 64x64x64 cube, however, I found the layout to be somewhat unsuitable as it seemed to waste a lot of space. So, I changed it to a 64x128x32 cube, keeping the volume, and making the space more useable. Unfortunately, I ended up having to extend the ceiling of the original cube so that the rain would work properly (stupid buggy weather effects... you've no idea how long I spent trying to get the fog and rain to work in this level...) Despite that, nothing leaves the confines of the original 64x128x32 cube, keeping it a genuinely small mission, but I've always found myself enjoying small missions with lots of interesting effects more than expansive missions.
This is my second mission released ever, and it's certainly been an eye opener for me to the work and effort that people put into fan missions. With that in mind, I wish to dedicate this release to those first fan mission creators of Thief: The Dark Project for all their efforts! I stand on the mountains of knowledge and experience that these legends have laid for us all, which made this mission possible. Thank you!

    Here it is:
Mine Affairs (Eng/It) Very special Thanks to Krenim for the Italian translation!

    Please Note: Mission Contains Nudity

    Mission Description:
After finally making it back from Darkstone Mine, I contacted Derryn to collect my "service fee". When Derryn learned of the death of his business partner, Cecil, he grew frantic. Apparently, Cecil was the owner of the mine, and in the case of his death, the mine would go to Cecil's next of kin, and any contracts Derryn had regarding the mine would be void. Unfortunately for Derryn, Cecil's next of kin is his older sister Rebecca, who has expressed interest in selling the land the mine is on and any mining rights to a wealthy mining establishment in Dayport, and will likely do so should she find herself holding the deed to the land anytime soon.
She won't be getting that opportunity. Derryn has "persuaded" me to do an additional job for him: Sneak into Cecil's manor, and steal Cecil's ledger containing the deed and any financial records which might reference it, before anyone else learns of Cecil's demise. Derryn can then modify the documents to his own desire. The job should be relatively quick and easy. The manor is small with few guards, but entry will likely be tough. A bolted door and barred windows can be much more effective than any guard.

    Tips:
To play, just drop it in your missions folder and play with DarkLoader. =)
Be sure to turn up your volume a bit, you'll want to be able to hear everything.
Also, be sure to adjust your gamma, so it's not too bright. The secrets shouldn't be terribly hard to find. =)
The gameplay is probably best suited to those who enjoy ghosting (no knockouts) and those who enjoy exploration, as it's a rather small mission with only two guards. There are no requirements for ghosting though, as I prefer open ended gameplay. =)

What have people said so far?
How on earth do I get inside?!
    OMG, look at that!
    Where could this lead?
    Wow, it looks almost bearable.

    Enjoy yourselves!

Dammit, I was all set to work on DCE tonight... but I loved the last one so much I have to play this now!

    Edit:
Love the mission so far, but I'm stuck. Playing on Expert.

    Where's Rebecca's music?

Where's the essence of fire? I dropped a lit flare on the bed and it went poof, but it was a white poof rather than an orange poof like the other three. Am I missing another portable source of fire?

For Rebecca's music... Search the Music room
For the Exorcism... Any source of fire, earth, water, and air will suffice, so crystals and the gas mine should work as well. The essence of fire is the lantern that was outside in the tower. If it was a white poof, it may have just been the flare burning out.

This was a very enjoyable little mission! I played it twice this evening and found all the loot and secrets the second time through. I like the steamy bathroom! Very nice touch. Thanks very much!

Thanks, got it! Finished with 100% loot and all secrets.

The white poof of the flare, btw, happened as soon as I dropped it on the bed, even though I had just lit it. So something on the bed is making it go out - perhaps the water source which was in the middle of the bed, who knows.

So are you going to continue producing an FM or two every month?

Ah, yes. The waterstim of the Water Essence would kill the flare, which which cause it to immediately burn out with a white puff, so the flare wouldn't reach the bed to trigger the event.

Hehe, I don't think I'm prepared to do a new FM *every* month... =P Maybe another one later this year. As fun as a two week dromed binge was, I kinda need to catch up on sleep, and finish my senior project, lol.

I'm glad you all seem to be enjoying the mission though! And the Steamy Shower, nightwalker. =P Save some thanks for the beta testers though, they really helped to put that extra bit of polish on this mission. Also, any comments or thoughts on any aspect of the mission... story, architecture, objectives... are more than welcome. I want to hear what you guys think. =)

Really liked this, AntiMatter_16 I enjoy these compact missions just as much as the big, epic ones - at least when they're as well made as this.
And some nice touches with the sub-plots, the voice & the steamy bathroom.

    Thanx very much!

    Bed...

The voice tells me to find the switch in the study, which I do and flip it. What does that actually open? It sounds like it's far away...
(Duh... curtains thru me off).. The ghost says to release him, but how?

What bed am I suppose to put all the elements on?

Can't find anything about what bed to use

The "working" plumbing was a treat I usually don't waste water, but it sure was fun turning on every faucet in the house

@ Acolyte6 The switch should move the painting above the desk. And you'll then know what bed to use. If it doesn't then I'm afraid I don't know what's wrong.

Oh... you liked them well made? So much for my idea of a 64foot^3 Jorge air brush with a guard. Guess I'll have to push the next one back...

Glad you're all enjoying this one. ^_^

    @Acolyte6
The switch in the study does indeed move the painting above the desk. If it doesn't, it's possible you frobbed it twice by accident, or you're in the wrong room, frobbing a different secret switch. =P The only sound you'll hear is the switch moving, as the painting doesn't have any sound when it opens.
