I saw Bruno last night and have just finished Watchmen tonight. Both were pointless and boring. At least I won't have to watch them again. Roll on Mesrine.

''Gerry'' (2002) by Gus Van Sant with Casey Afflleck and Matt Damon

You know, two guys drive to the desert for a small hike, they cant find back to their car and get lost, without water or any other vital equipment.

Yes, it ran in the movie last week! Theres a special cinema showing random movies from the last two decades.

It was shown that way to preserve the ~2:35-2:40 scope aspect ratio of the film. You might want to read your TV's manual to see if it has an alternative wide zoom mode, most do.

Off-topic: I personally can't stand watching 4:3 ratio material stretched to widescreen, I use pillarbox mode whenever possible. (ditto for legacy games) Luckily most HDTV's will automatically preserve original ratios of most materials (eg a non-anamorphic DVD) if you use a HD mode like 720p/1080i/1080p.

This thread is about film, not TV shows.

Uh, well its called "What have you watched lately?" - which by my count does not discriminate between film and tv.

However then; I like to think of the DOCTOR WHO series as one big film.

Nope, I just started on the season with Martha Jones. I hear thats the season where things start getting darker and more adult compared to previous ones (as emphasised with the first episode having Rhino's as the intergalactic police).

Not that I know what Neuromancer is.

It does, but the problem is that the subtitles don't display properly- I only get the top half. I've yet to try it on a 4:3 or on my PC, though.

I am splitting up with my LONG time girlfriend. I ordered up The Breakup on OnDemand and invited her into the living room to watch it. It damn near mirrored some of the dumb shit (mostly passive-aggressive) we have been doing to each other the last couple weeks. It was nice that we were able to laugh at "ourselves" while watching the movie.

Jesus christ. You watched BOTH the Ultimate Avengers movies? Why on earth would you subject yourself to that kind of punishment?

I bought myself a blu-ray player for my PC so I've been trying to watch any BD-DVD I can. My latest was American Psycho. I'm pretty sure that Bateman was hallucinating through the entire movie but it does make you think. Next up from Netflix is Dawn of the Dead.

    Just finished Rendition.

I really hate it when people look at you expectantly after a film that moves you and breaks the silence with a very abrupt and unwelcomed " SO?!? " followed by a toothy grin like you owe them something.

Is it as emotionally manipulative and contrived as Tsotsi was?

This is a legitimate discussion thread, the others are mostly silly "me too" spam outlets.

I don`t know Tsotsi. But it does a good job of making you think you know what is going on, and then reminding you that your own pretenses are the ones that are contrived.

I sat through two movies today on cable for no better reason than I felt like it. The first was Midnight Express, about a guy convicted to life in prison in Turkey for trying to bring some hash into a plane, then breaking out ... Better than I thought it'd be.

The second was The Freshman again ... I forgot that the girl coerced the prof to give Matthew Broderick an A in his class, which I guess in retrospect was really a running gag. Whatever highschool-ish 80s movie he was in, at some point somebody somewhere had to get an undeserved A through some kind of trickery.

Watched Sky Fighters (Les Chevaliers du Ciel) yesterday.
Sure the plot is stupid but the action, ohmygod. This movie beats Top Gun on every flight level. Gorgeous.

Yeah, me too. Again. Last saturday. Not quite as good on the second viewing. The first 3 chapters; The Comedian, John, Rosarch are excellent and exciting but after that it starts sagging a bit.

Watched The Good, The Bad & The Ugly yesterday. A rare movie where the guy who, at a glance, is supposed to be the comic relief character is actually the star of the film. Not sure how others feel about this, but to me, this is Tuco's film.

On Saturday I watched "Denise calls up" (1995). A movie about a bunch of New York yuppies who solely communicate via telephone while hammering away at their laptops. Events they manage never meeting face to face: A party, sex, birth, a funeral. Kinda funny and tragic at the same time. (imdb)

I remember that one. Really good. Did you like it?

Me I loved it but any time I wanted to show it to someone they invariably said it sucked.
