New T2 FM: To Send a Message (05/10/2009)

    Hi all

My first FM is finally ready for download.

    * Story *
Times are tough. Truart is expanding his iron grip over the city. The number of bluecoats is increasing so fast that it seems like they come off an assembly line.

Last night during one of my "scouting" walks I found a drunk in a ditch. He turned out to be one of Lord Eshaktaar's servants. Most of the stuff he said didn't make any sense, but I managed to understand that Lord Eshaktaar has come into possession of a certain Ominous Bequest Gold. However in a couple of days he will be sending it away to some triad that is broken. Whatever all these mean. Lord Eshaktaar's mansion has a backdoor in Dromedhurst, an old and ugly neighbourhood which is full of maze-like narrow alleys. What makes it worse is the fact that it is full of Truart's guards who will be impossible to sneak by. And the word has it that Truart tends to use local people as guards so they'd do a better job.

I have to act fast. Tonight I will kill two birds with one stone: I will relieve Lord Eshaktaar from this golden ominous bequest before that broken triad get their hands on it, and I will knock out every guard on my way to send Truart and his henchmen a message.

    * Notes *
This FM is not meant to be ghosted. With so many missions coming out lately with emphasis on ghosting, I wanted to make a mission about knocking out people. You cannot sneak past any of the guards. Don't tell me I didn't warn you.
This mission may not look very pleasing aesthetically, but a lot of effort has been put into fine-tuning the game play. All the lights, objects, guard locations and patrols etc. have all been placed carefully. It is made of small self-contained sections. I recommend you to save before each section, be patient and try to figure out the way to knock out the guard. Just like a puzzle, really. Ideally you should be able to finish it without getting hurt.

    Congratulations Haplo. Love the storyline.

I think you said somewhere that it was quite short which is great for me - a break from testing.

Nice little mission. And nice to see a KO FM!

You cannot sneak past any of the guards.
The first one is possible, he doesn't go into search mode if you're really really fast.

ah ok...thought I would just make sure....I played another fm a few days ago(The Dead of winter) and it completely buggered up my config....had to uninstall T2 and reinstall, and just thought maybe I did not have all the relevant scripts reinstalled too....but if that was the finish then I appear to be ok..

Thanks for the encouraging words guys!

Maybe I should have worded the objectives better...They should have said something like:

    - Firstly knock everyone out,
    - Then get to the mansion.

    congrats on your first release!
the Start/New/Cancel buttons are messed up (weird ghosts of the surrounding images), as are the cheese and the chest at the end - I'm not a DromEder, though, so I can't tell you why

Weird, I didn't touch any of those. Have you tried any other FMs to see if they have the same issue?

Wow, I love the idea of the mission. Heavy focus on an aspect of gameplay (and that aspect isn't ghosting). Can't wait to play it when I get home.

This is what I had in mind for sapping each guard (warning: heavy spoilers!):

Russ: Immediately start running to the shadow and knock him out when he passes by.

Adriana: Stay crouched hugging the wall, when she gets to your side of the pit start running, raise your blackjack, jump down and whack!

Gillaume: The most difficult one (a tribute to extremely difficult Necron at the end of his FM The Mystery Man). You'd need to use one of Dark Engine's bugs. Start running up the ramp, when you get to the top wait until he comes up to you, when he is close enough jump down and stand in the absolute darkness, raise your blackjack and lean forward. By this time he'd be down the ramp and running towards you. *Just* before he is close enough for your blackjack to reach him let your blackjack go. It would connect to his head on the way down and knock him out.

Rich: Shoot a rope arrow and climb the beam, get the water arrow. Jump down and go back to the previous alley behind the pipe. Get out of his sight long enough for him to start looking for you. Shoot the torch and enter Rich's alley again. Stand in total darkness and hit him when he approaches.

David: Go up the ramp and wait for him to come up to you. Jump down and start picking the lock. If you are quick enough you can even finish one round of lockpicking. By this time he would be back down running at you. Mantle up and wait for him again. Continue until the box is unlocked. Then get the flashbomb and finish him off.

Please let me know if you knocked out any of the guards using a different method!

By the way, I wonder how many people got the joke behind the alley names and the guard names...it was a tribute to my most favourite mission builders.

I was able to get the water arrow by climbing onto the transformer.

I KO them all without using the flashbomb and water arrow. I was a little confused too about the optional objective ticking off when I went back to the mansion. btw the mansion doorway has sky texture at the top.

Yeah stay close to the wall, jump or mantle over the obstacle quietly...not too difficult...and lean over and whack - edging forward as needed to get close enough. It was rather simplistic cause I used this tactic for three of them I think. You I had wondered what the point of the flashbomb, water arrow, or ramps were cause I had already taken care of the guards by that point and found no other torches.

A good first little mission Haplo. Not too challenging, but I have gotten very used to the tricks of dark engine...well that and good timing.

Say, anybody able to melee a combat bot? That is last enemy I have yet to handle consistently in melee combat.

    Haplo:
I make some noise so the guard starts to find me. When he stops searching and returns to his post I quickly run and BJ him.

I did the same as Iceblade - I was very surprised they didn't see me! Tunnel vision perhaps?

It was a nice mission, though the last 3 guards, that would have actually been a problem, could just simply be knocked out with a quick lean forward maneuver.

Hope you make these kinds of missions in the future, cause I enjoyed this one. Not always is it about an epic story and atmosphere. Sometimes it's just fun to use your mind's potential (or learn from author's ingenuity) and solve such puzzles.

Thanks for the feedbacks. I have uploaded a new version that fixes the doorframe texture problem. Also hopefully it should no longer be possible to knock the guards out by leaning forward. I had underestimated you taffers!
