After 8 months my first public release is finally finished. It's called The Sun Within and The Sun Without and is a medium sized mission for Thief 2. The setting is a bit unconventional as you will soon notice, but I've tried to stick to the traditional style as much as possible, within that setting. The main focus is on climbing.
Download it from here (English version only):

Krenim translated all readables into Italian and I updated the maps. New thread: http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=131294

Story summary (check out the readme for more background):
There is actually one Lord who hasn't yet had the pleasure of being robbed by a master thief. His name is Lord Abdjilan, but my sources do not have much info on the guy except that he belongs to one of the oldest nobilities in The City and that the Abdjilan family is very successful in their business of choice. They seem to run some kind of "import/export" operation, but no one seemed to know exactly what that meant. I think I am going to pay the Abdjilans a visit. I don't have much else on my schedule, anyway.
As usual with people as reclusive as the Abdjilans, the rumours are abundant. The most prominent rumour is about two twin gems called "The Sun Within" and "The Sun Without", which are kept somewhere in the Abdjilans' private catacombs. I couldn't find anyone who'd actually been inside these catacombs, but plenty "knew someone" who had. Anyway, my sources told me that the catacombs were supposed to be quite a labyrinth of branching passageways and dead ends, but at least well-kept and unhaunted. Despite all their talk, no one could provide me with a proper map. Well, I guess I could bring some extra paper - a map of the place should fetch a pretty high price.
Beta-testers (in alphabetical order):
- Dussander
- LarryG, who also made some custom objects.
- nickie
- PotatoGuy
- Tannar
- Undead gamer
Who, by the way, did a great job of stopping me from doing stupid things and made the 3 months of beta-testing totally worth it.
This thing will live its own life now, but please don't post any screenshots showing the outdoor areas, because I want them to be a surprise.
I enjoyed creating it and I hope you will enjoy playing it.

The first challenge:
Find the basketball.
Hint: It might not be where you think it is.
Hint 2: You will find some clues in a seemingly unimportant and unrelated creation of vice memory.
Hint 3: Look beyond the very borders of this world.
Hint 4: There is a scroll who's enjoying the company of his peers.
Hint 5: Look beyond the beyond.
Hint 6: Do some soul-searching.
Hint 7: Transcend into the world of The Builder.
Hint 8: Stick your nose where it (usually) doesn't belong.
Hint 9: PotatoGuy is surprised that clearing didn't find the basketball. Why is that?
The second challenge:
Steal a bottle of wine from an old friend.
Hint: Solving the first challenge will provide hints.
A third challenge will be made available when at least one person have solved the second.

Looking forward to the rope crates.

I'm playing it right now and so far I am impressed: this really is an unconventional setting. Though I'm not sure what's going on and where I am, I managed to find The Sun Within and The Sun Without. Right now I'm trying to retrieve my lucky charm. I've spotted it from above, where the dead thief is. Is there any way of stopping the sun from trying to murder me? I can't get a good angle to jump down there when I'm constantly blown of the rock and sent tumbling into a bottomless void.
Oh, and the mission crashes to the desktop when I lug off the dead thief from the cliff.

Unfortunately, no. Could you give me directions? I can't find it. I must have been blown off that rock about fifty times now while searching the area.
Woohoo!
Something to play on the 25th!![]()
I realize now that what had me stumped for so long was I didn't try to shoot the locked panels depicting elements spirits with elemental arrows. Bloody hell, that puzzle was introduced in The Lost City, right? It's been a while since I have played The Dark Project and didn't remember that at first. Thanks Little_Dragon and Tannar, you indirectly clued me in on it!
qolelis, I'm on Windows XP with Service Pack 2.
I finished all objectives except the loot goal. In need 1800 in loot and I got 1785. I looked everywhere and even found a secret, a small crystal hidden underneath two rocks below where the thief died. Which particular piece of loot could be so cleverly hidden that I´ve missed it?
Congrats on the release! Anxious to fire it up tonight. Mirrored it over at the Southquarter download page too.
Great mission. But I'm stuck. I have all goals checked, except to find the twin gems. Where're they?

That did it, thank you very much Little_Dragon!I had been there before, but did not spot the loot until my second visit to the place.
All in all, this is a very memorably mission. The atmosphere in that desolate place is its strongest feature. It really makes you feel you're lost in limbo. Navigating the winding tunnels and the vertical shafts above the gaping abyss was challenging to say the least. I lost count of how many times I plunged to my death. I estimate it must have been more than a hundred times. Seriously, I had to reload the game over a hundred times. It says a lot about the quality of this mission that I didn't let that deter me from pressing on and finally completing it. I had a hard time completing the loot goal on Hard difficulty and when I saw the final statistics, I was surprised to find out I had found only half of what was hidden in the mission. This is a mission for hardened explorers who aren't intimidated by difficult climbs and devilish loot placement.
I have a few questions for qolelis or for people who have already finished the mission:
spoiler:
- As far as I understood, the portal in the Lord's crypt teleports you to a giant piece of rock surrounding the remains of the tower of a Precursor stargazer. Somehow, it was ripped out of the earth and teleported to a nameless limbo. Did I miss a readable that details how the tower ended up in limbo along with the sun?
- There are three ways to exit back to the Lord's crypt: the chamber with the wheel for which you have to find a missing piece first, the pool with the dark void in the temple where there is a wall with precursor messages, and, finally, a dark cloud atop the sun tower, right next to the telescope. Any more that I missed?
- There is a loose stone on the ceiling of the room in which the stargazer died. I shot a fire arrow at it and it fell to the ground. I tried to shoot a rope arrow at that hole, but it wouldn't stick. What's up with the hole in the ceiling?
- I retrieved the Ring of Clarity. It apparently can be activated as soon as it is in your inventory. What does it do?
- Later in the mission, a shaft opened through which I could conveniently float from the bottom of the tower to the top and back. When does this shaft open?
- What happens when you activate all heat/energy transfers? I did that and nothing seemed to happen. Something to do with the shaft?
- Who is the thief that died in a shaft with the red lights and a broken ladder? The place is above the wall with the Precursor messages. I did not find anything to identify him. Dying alone in a place like this, not knowing in which forsaken, derelict place you are, and no way to get back, that's just a terrible thought. For some reason, this had a strong emotional impact on me.
- Below the aforementioned shaft with the red lights is another ladder. It leads below the sun tower, directly into the gaping abyss. I ropecrated down there and after many tries I managed to jump to the remains of a corridor. It looks like there is nothing down there, the door is fake. I have a hard time believing there is really nothing down there since this would be a perfect place for a secret, but there isn't, right?

Ring of Clarity opens secret passage in the room, where the fire appears as you enter it, it also turns off that fire.
Holy smokes - there are a ton of incredible effects on display in this mission!
congrats on the release. This will be my holiday fun. Can't wait
[*]Did I miss a readable that details how the tower ended up in limbo along with the sun?
As far as I can remember, that isn't explicitly explained in a readable. qolelis will likely have more to say on this one.
[*]There are three ways to exit back to the Lord's crypt: ... Any more that I missed?
There is one behind the block wall in the area that the mostly-invisible light keeper patrols.
[*]There is a loose stone on the ceiling of the room in which the stargazer died.
That stone falls and opens the door in the floor if it isn't already open. That's in case you got into that room from the outside rather than from underneath and had no water arrows.
[*]I retrieved the Ring of Clarity. It apparently can be activated as soon as it is in your inventory. What does it do?
It opens the transportation shaft in the tower. Or rather, it allows you to see and use the shaft. It also negates the effects in each of the tower rooms (fire, water, etc.)
[*]Later in the mission, a shaft opened through which I could conveniently float from the bottom of the tower to the top and back. When does this shaft open?
When you use the ring of clarity.
[*]What happens when you activate all heat/energy transfers?
If you have activated all of them, it gives power to the elevator in the mines and opens the door to it.
[*]Who is the thief that died in a shaft with the red lights and a broken ladder?
I'll have to let qolelis answer this one.
[*]Below the aforementioned shaft with the red lights is another ladder. It looks like there is nothing down there, the door is fake.
There is nothing there but congrats for making it!It isn't easy.
