THIEF'S DEN!
Thief's Den is a re-release of the first Dark Mod tiny demo mission converted by greebo (codereader) to work with the main Dark Mod release. Steal back your loot and incriminate the thief who double-crossed you! This was the first of the Thief's Den series in which you play Farrell.
Read the notes below while you ... DOWNLOAD HERE. (3MB)
Play time maybe 30 minutes to an hour first time.
This FM needs Dark Mod Update 1.02 or later.
This version has been modified to work with the Dark Mod released assets but is still essentially the same. The thief and thug models are updated and there is extra loot to find.
IMPORTANT: If you already have the original stand-alone demo version of Thief's Den installed in the same Doom 3 installation then you must delete or move away the folders: doom3\thiefs_den and doom3\darkmod\fms\thiefs_den BEFORE you install this re-release.
The original is still available as a stand-alone demo (needs Doom 3 but does not need Dark Mod installing) from http://modetwo.net/darkmod/wiki/inde...=Thief%27s_Den

Congrats on the release!
Very good; I never could play the original in full at that time due to HW/SW problems.
What is the correct way of getting inside at the very beginning? Climbing the fence hurts me and I can't see any other way.
Is that first guy immune to blackjacking, or do I just need to work on my technique?
Whenever its brought up I've seen the answers pretty much along the lines of "the blackjacking difficulty is right where it should be" by people that have apparently played The Dark Mod enough to have all the perfect spots memorized, and that some people actually enjoy how difficult it is to get a clean hit. I am not one of those people, and between the insanely close frob distance for pickpocketing and the unreliable blackjacking I just use notarget and enjoy the mission as much as I can anyway. I dunno - it sucks to have to resort to using cheats but on missions where clean hits and combat are impossible it makes it more fun for my play style.
Regardless - I'm thankful these older missions are getting updated so that we can all play them
To be clear, you do have to try to strike the head, and if alerted, the back of it. Many don't seem to have any difficulty with TDM's blackjacking, but if you're experiencing any behavior that appears to be reliably wrong, try to capture a video of it for the sake of a bug report. It's more helpful than saying it's 'too hard', or simply ignoring a potential problem.
We're not some big corporate entity, just the community, and we can use all the help we can get.
I know its a community developed mod and I know that alot of folks think the blackjacking is just fine as it is - which is why I said that when things get to the point where it feels like the mod is cheating against you (not allowing a clean hit after six or seven reloads on certain AI that should be KO'able) I just cheat back and toss notarget on and go on my merry way and pretend that I'm ghosting.
I know that some are bothered by Thief and Thief 2's ability to score a solid hit from a decent distance 100% of the time but that is one of those constants that I really enjoyed about the games. Call it arcade style or whatever you'd like - but hyper realism when it comes to blackjacking (failing to get a clean hit nearly 60% of the time, for example) in that you expect you've got a perfect opportunity for a clean hit only to have the AI shake it off and swing around to kill you is not that fun. If you'd want me to record a video I could probably record about 70% of my blackjacking experiences on alot of the missions due to the blackjacking just not feeling right and never really knowing if I'm going to score a knockout or if the AI is just going to shake it off and kill me in an explosion of piss and vinegar. Combat (and blackjacking) still feels clunky and uneven - but I really enjoy all the other parts of the mod and how it handles.
The mod is aimed at the hardcore and I've accepted that fact - I still play it in my own ways and enjoy it all the same.
Anyway - we should probably get back to discussing the mission at hand and leave the general Dark Mod discussion for the Dark Mod threads.
