    Briefing:

Things are getting a little tense in the City. Night patrols everywhere, the Mayor is out to 'clean it up', pressured by the rich who put him in power.

Hard to make a living in times like these so I decided to try an out of town venture. There's a small mining town clear of the menace of the City Watch. I thought it would be a good place to hide and pick a few pockets.

    Boy was I wrong.
Seems the miner's have had a bad time lately, earthquakes, cave-ins, not much coming out of there the last few weeks, and what has has gone straight to the top.

Literally. Lord Van Brachenstien who owns the gem mines lives atop a nearby mountain in a town called 'Hilltop', my current target.

I've secured a room in a quite inn and have listened to tales about the Lord in the pub, tonight I make my move.

Rumor has it the Lord has a jewel encrusted scepter, maybe not valuable enough to quit my day job, but certianly enough to pay the rent until things cool off. And nobody will be the wiser once I pawn it off in the City.

I don't think I'll have much to worry about up here, the people seem fairly dim and the guards can't be much brighter, should be an easy take.
    ==============

This is it, my first released TDM mission. Built in a just about a month. Not perfect but it was fun to do.

Really looking forward to playing it, but I'm a bit confused. Darkmod missions are normally just a .pk4 file...how do I install this?
    EDIT: Oh...crap...
Just noticed that "This is good for 10 downloads only" message, gah, sorry about that. If I hadn't been so click happy and had read that first I would have waited for it to be uploaded elsewhere. Might wanna increase the size of that text for those who are as dense as I am (there has to be one or two...).

Just finished it- really fun mission, I really liked how the vertical theme was used in a way opposite of the norm. A few things:

1: Is there a way to get through the portcullis inside the underground temple (not the big one on the outside, the one inside the temple itself just opposite the throne room)?
2: On a similiar note, is there a way into the Builder temple at the start? The doors are usable but locked, and you can clearly hear guards on the other side...
3: The section in the mines where you see your first "flaming head" zombie and can hear this ghostly voice speaking backwards was awesomely creepy!
4: I loved the earthquake effects! Really made me feel like I should duck and cover- the entire rift itself looked great too.
5: Just something that crossed my mind- why don't TDM author's seem to like using revenants? They're so damn cool and extremely well made, but it seems like most mission authors would rather settle for craploads of zombies. Not that I'm anti-zombie or anything, but what's with the lack of love for haunt styled monsters?
6: Is it intended to not have the "Search the Rift" objective ding off unless you approach the underground temple's entrance from the inside? It doesn't really make that much sense, as most players won't bother exploring what is obviously a dead end. I say "most" because I found it on accident, given my obsessive need to go everywhere.

Anyway, I really enjoyed it! Thanks for the mission- and sorry that I don't have any means of permanently uploading it for you...

Thanks Mike, glad you enjoyed it but you aren't done yet.

    1 no contest boundry
2 yes, got vertically the other way
5 well, I wanted it to see like there has never been anyone there, except the adventurer and the miners from the cave in. Revenants are Builders, so it was out of place.
6 you can look in and see things and grab something from the front, and that really is the furthest spot away in the map, so best way to force the player into triggering the objective than force them into a well lit dead end.

    Did you find the treasure?

    Thanks, PsymH

I found a better thread on TDM Forums and got the FM from a FileFront link. Looks like I better just not try the Rapidshare links, 'cos they just don't work for me, and wait for a mirror that works.

Still, it's pretty fast getting even one mirror up since this only came out yesterday Nice job! And congrats, Baddcog, for the release! Can't wait to play!

If you mean the treasure that triggers an optional objective hidden inside of the leftmost tower of the underground temple, then yes, I did. Of course I did finish with 1,000 loot still unaccounted for (even after breaking into the Builder temple, following your instructions), so this may or may not be what you're referring too.

A couple more things that just popped into my mind:
    1. First off just some thoughts on the Dark Mod: I really hated sword fighting when it was first released, but for some reason I don't quite understand, I love it now! I don't know if it's really been tweaked since the initial release or if I just didn't "get it" at first, but as it stands now it really kicks ass. You just need to understand that the block button is a gamble that won't always pay off and that it's really more about positioning and recognizing the defensive posture of your enemies, and then timing your strikes and their direction. It's really visceral and satisfying- I might even crank up the combat difficulty some day when I'm feeling crazy.
    2. Treasure chests in this mission were occasionally a real pain to steal from, as highlighting the objects inside was near-impossible at times. I've had this problem in quite a few Darkmod missions as well. I don't know anything at all about mission design, but could this problem be fixed by not making the bottom half of the chest usable? Being as you can use your lockpicks on the top or bottom it wouldn't really matter and it seems like it would make grabbing the loot inside without highlighting the chest itself infinitely easier. Would this fix actually work or no?

Not having any luck getting this one to run. Had no problem with all the other fms. Put it in the fms folder and it doesn't show up in the ingame list. Downloaded it 3 times. Any ideas?

The 'frobability' of objects can be increased by the FM maker but not everyone is aware of this. I always test this in my FM and boost them a bit if hard to grab. It is also possible to create a toggle so you can crouch a bit higher and lean over better. I've posted that somewheres. I can post again if need be.

Cap: Make sure you have updated Dark Mod by running tdm_update until it says you are up to date. The ability to handle zips wasn't in the early releases.

Alternatively, just rename rift.zip to rift.pk4. But you still might need the update depending what is in the FM.

Edit: Nevermind, I figured it out. Put it in the wrong folder. Doh! Had a bad first install of TDM and an extra fms folder left over.

Sorry, I didn't put the date in the title but can't figure out how to edit that.

    ---------
My beta testers never complained about not being able to frob stuff in the chests, and like-wise I never had an issue with any of that myself.
One trick I use alot is to crouch, then lean left or right over the chest, you can get some 'hard frobs' that way. I do that in most missions here and there.

I honestly like frobbing the chest body because then you can see the lock pin move. If you only highlight the chest you can't, so it makes it harder to pick.

Some of the larger loot pieces I put lower in the chests but they are large so they shouldn't be that hard.

But I didn't change anything so it's all stock tdm 1.02.

congratulations on the release! this mission is a lot of fun, and I'd like to keep exploring past the ruins - when will Part 2 be ready

I did get into the ruins' tower, but never got into the church... better head back in to investigate, now that I have some clues

technical notes: I had trouble with the loot in chests as well, even crouching on top of them didn't help (I had to leave a goblet behind in the throne room). maybe if the lock and the lid were frobbabale, but not the chest base itself?
the flaming-skulled zombies are pretty freaky, but when they move the smoke trail still goes straight up and it looks kind of funny. it isn't major, but maybe the DM team could look at a tweak for the next update. how do I suggest that?

The Mike: check out the just-released The Betrayal by Fieldmedic for some Revenants! and of course Glenham Tower...

Strange, i only have one goal left : return to your room (starting point) and wait a while.
this objective should tick off, i reckon this is a bug i´m facing, right?
