I just played this mission - MASTERPIECE! I was delighted the whole time. The music and gameplay really took me back to my youth playing nintendo RPGs like Ultima and Dragon Warrior. Everything was pretty much foolproof, which is how the old games were, and I greatly appreciate all the behind-the-scenes work that went into making it that way. Very very well done, and very enjoyable!

after a ridiculously long break (back when I played it I got stuck at the wizard's tower but lol this time it took me 1 minute knowing the same amount of info to get out) I came back and yay - finished the mission. To my surprise there was a 2nd mission. But, alas, what's this? After the missino complete video and stat screen I click continue and it throws me ack to my menu. No mistaking it. Tried it again and again, but to no avail.

So I don't know - has anyone else had this error? I'm not patient nor fast-reading enough to scroll through all these pages, so can anybdoy tell me what's the deal? Adorable mission all in all, wanted to finish all of it.

EDIT: Ahh, leaped to page 8 and there was the answer. I DLed this so long ago but I thought I had the newest version. Oh well.

Ah, glad you found the answer! Unfortunately this does mean you'll need to play through the whole bloody thing again.

    Sorry

Aw, that's no problem! Since I finished the whole mission and care not for the time stats (tho apparently it did take 2 hours which seems like a lot since i did the last 30% today a lot quicker I think) I can just alt+ctrl+shift+end to the next mission

I'd love to play this one, but all the AI are standing around with their arms out to the sides. They don't move, but I can converse with them. Also my rope arrows won't work. Could this be a script problem? I haven't had problems with any other fms like this.

I'd start by making sure the files gen.osm and motiondb.bin exist in your Thief2 directory.

Thanks, Haplo! motiondb.bin was missing! I wonder where it went?
ps: You've been on my mind since yesterday when I came across that special file you sent so I could play your fm - I'm looking forward to dedicating some time to it this weekend.

    stuck in wizard/mage's place

I read through threads on this before, some time back, and still am stuck in the guy's tower.

I ran into the guy that says he went 3 directions and never made it out. I never made it out.

Can anyone give me a pointer or two? There is that servant or "captive" that tells me he went 2 or 3 ways and never made it.

I go the way he did not and I keep going in circles.

    thank you.

Well I was stuck in the silly awesome tower as well for a good time and actually stopped playing because of it but when I picked it up again, remembering the clue of one of the trap-ees (prisoners) to go west (or actually that he had gone all directions BUT west), THIS TIME for some reason it worked flawlessly. Dunno why not back then.

BUT ANYWAY how I remember doing it is that I went to the west staircase (if there isn't one just walk up/down till u stumble upon one), then when though it, I went right back into it. I think the room swap happens even halfway so no need to go all the way. RIGHT? But yeah, I went back and forth the same west staircase till I reached the unseen one - da eggzit!

Ahh, such a brilliantly crafted FM though.

yep, that helped, thanks. I went up and down the stairs without leaving them and ended up in a room with a book and the exit.

finished that part and part 2 and now done.

Well that was interesting, and different (in a good way). I enjoyed most everything about this; the Gardener's house was most awesome. The subtle humor was great. I'm still Lol'ing at purple o-clock.. The music started giving me a headache though (but I get distracted easily, that's just me). But once again, I am amazed how fans continue to push the boundaries of Dark Engine and do different things with it. Thanks for sharing such an unusual yet enjoyable FM.

I guess it's about time for me to add my opinion to the list as well.

"Fables of the Penitent Thief" is a well-done conversion of the Thief game into one of the old-style adventure games with graphics (and maybe even content) made for children. It was a nice break from "classical" Thief adventures as we know them, and a bit of a journey back in time to the action-adventure games from about 20 years ago. Having the sound of speaking people "mangled" in some way and seeing all those moving or shifting wall textures did a lot to draw me into that almost forgotten world once again, as well as the large messages displayed across the screen when the player listens to someone. And last but not least the exaggerated colors found throughout the game fit perfectly into this.

Most of the tasks were easy enough for children as well, although the drinking contest and especially the parts in the gardener's house and the wizard's tower were more difficult. If this was made for children, maybe some changes on the easiest difficulty levels would be recommended.

The only thing I did not like was the gardener's house, mainly because I had a lot of trouble placing rope arrows in the right place. Apart from that, I was among those who felt irritated due to the background music as well as the moving textures. Anyone experimenting with things like these should at least give the player an opportunity to get rid of both (like someone did for "Fables" later on).

And this "easter egg" thing was fascinating for me as well, whether they were required or not. Somehow, players may get addicted to stuff like that, whether the author wants it or not.

    Thanks Baeuchlein,

I was just debating making another installment this weekend. Wondering if there's a way to convince Digi sign on board for another

I think you've summed up the pros/cons well. If there's to be another, the animated textures will be scrapped - too much work and it drove some people nuts. Plus I can spend more time on the individual textures without wondering how I'm going to draw it 5 more times

As for the music I'm thinking some light classical (Satie?) that doesn't change every time you go in/out of a place, so you're not constantly hearing the begining of the song.

    Where's the Ghost? (Part 2)

Looks like I'm the only dummy here, but where's the ghost? I got the sword, but now I can't find it.

EDIT: Nevermind...I forgot about the rope arrows.

Seems lots of online links for FOTPT have disappeared ! Even good old Filefront.

I found a still active one at Mediafire though. (I got it via the Thief Wiki page for the FM - Wiki Page for FOTPT)
    http://www.mediafire.com/?2dix11inm4m39fb

The filename is 8Nov - but the Wiki says the latest release date is 15 Jan 2012 - no idea where to get update patches from.

There's an external review at http://taw.duke4.net/2011/08/thief2/...enitent-thief/ (the download links at the end of the review are invalid though)

Wow, I don't know how I missed this FM when it was released, but this thread popping up made me realize that I hadn't played it yet. I just remedied that situation, and am VERY glad I did!

I sold my very large box full of old Nintendo games and console last year in a yard sale, and this mission reminded me just how much I miss them. This had that same cutesy, happy, peppy, friendly feel as many of my old Nintendo games, and it was great fun! The 2nd mission was my favorite because I love the "little big world" setting with lots of rope arrows required and wish there were more FMs that used it.

Thanks Sliptip and Digi! Loved it!

Forget about that release date 15 Jan 2012. That must be a problem on the Wiki.
I found a couple of OLD missions that have a date like Jan 15/16 2012 which have not been updated in years. And that specific Wiki page has not been updated in months.
No idea where it gets these timestamps from.

For sure Nov8 is the latest version.

And yes, Ricebug, TTLG.de has all the missions - except for just a few older missions and updates.
Hell, I wished that the admins of both Thiefmissions.com and TTLG.de would find the time to update their sites with the list of missing/outdated missions that I point them to... but I guess that effort is in vain. Or at least they could PM a reply that I should stop bothering them
No idea why I keep maintaining these lists:

    Missing on Thiefmissions
    Missing on TTLG.de

Have finished it only now, this mission is a true wonder and something very unusual. A product of professional quality in every way. 5 hours well spent.

in the second mission "the castle", I can get higher on the shelves after the canon.... any suggestions?

edit: Never mind... apparently there's a hole in the corner where you have a clean shot.
