Man, I bought this sucker the other day. I had it for 360 a couple of years ago, I bought it solely because of henke's recommendation. I thought it was clunky as hell on a controller, and the PC would be a nightmare. Nope. It actually works pretty well on kb/m, runs fine, and is still a blast to play. It still looks like a PS2 game, but who cares.

I love the shortcut icon sitting on my desktop. Having the Raincoat Killer staring at me looking like a little, pixalated Jawa is just satisfying.

Deadly Premonition is discounted by a whopping 90% on Steam for the next 27 hours, bringing it down to a mere TWO FIDDY euros.

Has anyone tried it out with the latest version of the DPfix recently? How well does it run, and how does it stack up against the original 360/PS3 versions?

I love what I've played of the game so far, but after a certain point fairly early on, it just keeps crashing on me no matter what I try. DPfix, no DPfix, compatibility settings, nothing works

Oh god I thought for sure it would be in a playable state by now. Sorry PigLick.

I've got it downloaded and DPfix installed but I haven't tried firing it up yet. Will give it a try later on.

edit: Goddammit it's crashing for me too. At first it was crashing on startup, but I found a fix for that in the Steam Community Guides. (go into the game's "redist" subfolder, right click on PhysX_SystemSoftware.msi and choose "Repair"), but after I got it running I could only play for a little bit before the screen went all gray and it didn't accept any commands. Not even ctrl+alt+del worked, had to restart by holding down the power-button.

edit 2: set compatibility mode to Win98/ME and ran as administrator. Started via DP.exe directly instead of Steam or the Launcher. Game started in windowed mode for some reason but ran just fine throughout the Prologue, but on loading the next chapter I was stuck with a black screen. :/

Still though, it's the sort of game that makes me fall in love with it just from hearing the main menu music.

I had that problem and I had to use CFF Explorer to make the .exe large-address aware. After that the crashes stopped.

    Will try that, thanks!

My crash has to do with the physx file, but I have tried to repair, re-install and it still doesnt work. What is this CFF Explorer business?

Of course you're doing this for DP.exe, not the one mentioned in that thread.

Well the problem turned out to be a previously incomplete install of physx driver so after d/l latest from nvidia the game works!
Just got to the police station without any crashes yet so looking good so far. I can tell the combat is going to annoy the hell outta me, but I am really liking it. Good music too.

Are you using an ATI card? I know in the past I had to grab something called "legacy PhysX drivers" in addition to the regular ones in order to get some finnicky games to work.

Yeh I am using an ATI card. Previously was using nvidia, so drivers for that probably werent uninstalled properly, hence the problem.

I snatched it in the sale as well and just started on it. It's pretty much exactly what described, an interesting mix of moody, spooky, funny and odd... I dig the vibe, even tho I am not a huge surhor fan. Only maybe 20mins in but no crashes so far!

Coincidentally, I also just watched the first episode of Twin Peaks and it's reminding me a lot of it!.

    Cripes!

Twice now I've been sorely tempted to pick up this game on sale And twice now I've gotten hooked on watching someone's lets play of it ONLY to have them quit well before the ending!

This time I got as far as the "sinner's sandwich" bit.

Is this game that much of a chore to complete?!?

EDIT: Finished watching the Deadly Premonition - Let's Play suggested by henke The third act of this game is MIND BLOWING!

There is no way I could summarize the big reveal without sounding like I was just making BS stuff up!

Well... the gameplay definitely is the weakest part of the equation, plus it's quite long. Still, I feel bad for anyone who quit before the end. The ending is, uh, quite memorable.

If you want a LP that goes all the way, check out the one by Two Best Friends. They talk a lot of shit though, which might be a plus or minus, depending on your milage and how much it might vary. I like them though.

I quit because of frequent crashes rather than the gameplay, which, I think, has the same sort of clumsy charm to it as the rest of the game. I've done the large-address aware thing now however, and it's next on my list of stuff to play.

    the sequel is out

I've been playing this for a few days now. It runs like shit, looks like shit, plays like shit, and I can't tear myself away from it. In other words, this sequel is very true to the original: a game that gets by on personality alone! I wasn't so sure about it at first, but a little bit into it there's a scene where York is telling the chef at his hotel about how his car was stolen and replaced with a skateboard. York is the kinda guy who rolls with the punches life throws him, so he got on the board and continued his journey. He tells about how for the first few miles he could barely stand on it, but after a while he'd gotten a grip on it and could even pull of some basic tricks! The chef is incredulous. I'm on board with this game.

The story is set in 2005, in the southern town Le Carre, somewhere near New Orleans. York is on vacation and stumbles across the murder of a young woman. The first game was heavily Twin Peaks influenced, and those influences are still clear here, but I'm also getting vibes of True Detective S1. It keeps the time-system of the first game, where each character has their own routine and certain things are only available at some times. At one point I had to wait half a week until Monday before I could get something done, so I spent the time mopping up some sidequests and sightseeing. The laidback pacing of this felt appropriate, since York is supposed to be on vacation after all.

Anyway, I'm on Episode 2. Will post more thoughts later.

Well, in the 10-15 hours I've played so far there's only been one combat section. It was as barebones as the combat in the first game, except you have a side-dash move and the ability to charge up your shot while locking on to several enemies for homing attacks. The enemies moved quite slow and only did melee attacks so they were quite easy and the game showered me in more medkits and ammo than I could've possibly used. Hoping future combat bits will be more challenging.

I actually would have preferred the game to be more adventure like without the combat sections, they annoyed the hell outta me.

I have a good feeling that we'll get a late PC port of this. I'll hold out for that as I hear the performance is absolutely atrocious on Switch, dropping to like 10fps at times.
