Thread: Sneaky Upgrade: Unofficial patch for Thief 3

I'm experiencing the Thief Gold crash on Bloodline mission. As this is an installed mod, the FMsel fix I saw mentioned isn't applicable.

TDS is turning out to be a real POS to do anything with.

I know that the game can see the installed mods (all of the others work without issue) and in fact, I switched out Castle mission files (in the Gold mod content folder) with the original TDS Castle mission files and the map started up without any problems. I am completely at a loss.

    Install order:

    Steam 1.1 install
    Sneaky Upgrade (Full Fat)
Editor installed over a copy of the above (just FYI)
Sneaky Editor Upgrade over Editor version

Both the MP gamesys and my slightly modified increased inventory gamesys result in the same crash on the bloodline map.

When using an adjusted starting inventory version of the original Castle 1 map (GMP file plus the original Castle 1 idt and both Castle 2 files), the game leads off into the second mission without a crash. Unfortunately, the gear isn't changed and the gear tab has a zero for health potions - this is a separate (and very frustrating) issue that I've given up on correcting.

So I'm using the initially installed versions for these two mods (MP's gamesys and Gold's Castle 1 GMP/IDT), and the game (even a new game) crashes upon reaching the bloodline mission.

By the way, what the hell is the IDT file? One isn't created whenever I export a map to the game.

Edit: I did see this within the sneaky upgrade launcher log:
    1 main: Starting with cmdline 'T3MAIN.exe \\.\DISPLAY1 "dummy" Castle1?-LoadTravel?-LoadSave?-ObjectFilter=0?DestTeleporter="Castle" '

Sounds like something went wrong when the installer was reconstructing the T3G maps. But you should have seen an error message in that case. Try rebooting (to make sure there are no spurious file locks), disable the virus checker and then reinstall the fat SU.

By the way, what the hell is the IDT file? One isn't created whenever I export a map to the game.
You mean IBT? It's the resource block file format used by the game. There's one for each map. They contain all the textures etc. used by that map.

You should probably read up on T3Ed a bit, and post any mapping related questions here. Exporting an IBT used to require you to temporarily change a config value and then launch the game from the editor. This has been automated by the SU editor patch - see the readme for details.

Edit: I did see this within the sneaky upgrade launcher log:
That file is not very informative. You can get more info by setting the log level to Info or higher in the tweaker (on the SU Advanced page) and starting the game once. The proper log file is Sneaky.log, in the same location.

Why is sneaky tweaker losing its ability to **** read his own **** options file?

Is Steam ***ing this up or is it just starting the program overwriting some stupid ****... or is this program just incapable of having an options file in any location other than allusers?

Edit: Apparently the problem is the program can't handle having savegames changed to any location other than All Users on the C drive (a really terrible location to place anything like this).

Edit 2: It is able to play bloodlines at least... hopefully there aren't any other corruptions. (not sure if it was zonealarm or just a bad install)

I cannot run either the Standard or Fat version of Sneaky Upgrade 1.1.5.1 because some of the tools were compiled with SSE2 instructions, and I still use an old computer (Athlon XP) that does not have SSE2 support. I'm probably about the only person in the world who still tries to use such an old machine for games, but it runs T3 fine.

Anyhow, with the Standard patch it is xdelta3.exe that crashes, with the Fat patch it is rebuild_ibt.exe. Both crash with a MOVLPD instruction, which is SSE2 specific.

EDIT: Sneaky Upgrade 1.1.0 installed fine, but then SneakyTweaker crashes with the same problem. Haven't tried other versions yet.

There's no reason for SSE2 use in the utilties you mention but Sneaky.dll itself might benefit slightly. I'll try doing a build with SSE2 disabled as a one-off and leave it disabled if there's no measurable performance loss. Should happen sometime this week.

You'll probably still miss the intro movies, because I currently use standard ffmpeg binaries and I'd rather not change that right now.

1.1.0 was done all in assembly, basic x86 stuff. SneakyTweaker doesn't work with that version.

    hm

    Hi there,

    I have a few questions.

    1. What is the formula of the crouch speed? I have tried configuring creepMultiplier, walkMultiplier, and had not seen any difference when crouching.
I wanna make my crouching a little faster. Just a little, no cheating. It's toooo booooring.

    2. Also, I want to return creeping without crouching. Let it be silent but very, very slow (let it be boring) but let it be! It's not realistic when you must crouch every time when you want to make two steps silently and backstab someone.
This is almost done, I've tried editing creepMultiplier in MP's default.ini and it kind of worked. But, when I set this multiplier to say 0.25 or even 0.2 the crouching speed lowers itself to non-tolerant value.

    3. How can I return the weapon icon to it's place, without vanishing after two seconds? I mean, I've got used to that when I equip with blackjack it is showed every time on the screen. So it was in the first two games, wasn't it?

    4. Oh! The most painful. How can I lean without making a step aside and not falling down from a wall?
It's dumb. I have read that in some user patches it was fixed, but obviously I can not install them onto Sneaky Upgrade and Minimalist Project. I can not even find them in the Web though. Is it possible to fix this using only .ini or other files without heavy job?

UPD: it seems now to me that creeping speed does NOT affect crouching. Is it true? I set creepMult.. to 0 and crouching speed did not change. Strange, when I set creep to lower values than 0.48 (in MP's default.ini) crouching became slower... It seemed so.

Also, I have read of some kind of "night vision" for Garrett, adding a light source to his blackjack with weight=0 that makes it invisible to guards. It's really vital some times, because I prefer to play with very low gamma value to make it more athmospheric, realistic or something, but it became a pain in ass when I try to find my way through corridors. I can not see where the wall is sometimes. But I don't wanna raise gamma value...

Ah. I see. I must disable MP's option which disables Garrett's eye night vision overlay. But where it is...

It was very nice in T2 that we could vary movement speed on fly, with mouse scroller. It's bad we can't do so in T3.

@plums: Try this - everything that is part of the normal build process should be SSE2 free. That leaves ffmpeg, the jpeg library used for screenshots and the file compression libs used by FMSel.

But: I searched the xdelta3.exe from the current release for movlpd instructions and didn't find any - don't know what's up with that. If you still get crashes during installation please provide as much info as possible, including the address of the offending instruction if available.

I don't think you can change crouch speed. At least I couldn't find anything in the tweak guide thread. That's probably fixable, so I've put it on the (very long) to-do list.

Also, I want to return creeping without crouching. Let it be silent but very, very slow (let it be boring) but let it be! Minimalist modifies the creeping so that you're not silent any more (but still more quiet than walking, AFAIK, even if the footsteps sound the same). I think that's a gamesys change, i.e. not changeable by editing ini files. You should be able to change the creep speed through the multiplier but I don't think it'll affect how stealthy you are.

Creeping and crouching are separate; creep is a modifier that affects speed when crouching as well as when walking normally.

How can I return the weapon icon to it's place, without vanishing after two seconds? I mean, I've got used to that when I equip with blackjack it is showed every time on the screen. So it was in the first two games, wasn't it?
If you use the 'classic' MP HUD (the default) then the weapon and inventory item are always shown (as long as you don't hit the Clear Weapon / Clear Item keys). So I guess you're using the other 'minimal' HUD where the weapon/item is hidden after a few seconds but the count is still visible? Either switch to the other HUD or experiment with the NormalPos_X values in the [WeaponCycleWindow] and [ItemCycleWindow] sections of the MP's T3UI.ini.

It may be possible to at least improve leaning by tweaking T3PlayerAnims.ini. You can have a go yourself, or search some more. There's a link in the tweaks thread but unfortunately that file has fallen of the Net.

Also, I have read of some kind of "night vision" for Garrett, adding a light source to his blackjack with weight=0 that makes it invisible to guards.
Must be this? Haven't tried it, as I'm not fond of the way it's implemented (replacing health potions etc).

Ah. I see. I must disable MP's option which disables Garrett's eye night vision overlay. But where it is...
To re-enable the mechanical eye zoom overlay in MP, just remove the check mark for it in the MP Tweak Overrides page in the tweak tool.

It was very nice in T2 that we could vary movement speed on fly, with mouse scroller. It's bad we can't do so in T3.
I never knew you could do that in T2. Should be possible to add it to T3... Another item for the (very long) to-do list.

Many thanks snobel, the installer ran successfully. However I still get a crash when trying to run SneakyTweaker or the FM Selector. Running T3 seems to work ok though.

Here are Dr. Watson logs for the crashes, which is hopefully enough info.

Thanks. Try replacing fmsel.dll with this. If you can then start it, try running an FM, make a save, then uninstall the FM backing up saves when asked.

For SneakyTweaker it looks like Qt needs to be rebuilt from source.

...and try this SneakyTweaker. If things work I'll pack up a proper installer.

Off topic, but Thief 2 really had a "mouse wheel scrolls through speeds feature"? How would it even work, considering that speed is determined by switching between two stances? Unless it's something like the old Splinter Cell games.

I thought maybe there was an "increase/decrease speed" function that you could bind the wheel to. I couldn't find any, though. You can bind the wheel to joyforward but that only gives you forward/backward control.

Great, everything works! Thanks once again.

(I also don't remember using the mousewheel to scroll speeds in T2.)

Proper installers for the non-SSE2 standard and fat editions. Performance testing will have to wait until the next release but hopefully the changes can stay in.

    problem installing sneaky upgrade

    Hi everyone!

    I got me a lil problem -

I tried to install Sneaky Upgrade to my digital download (Steam) of Thief 3 but some taffing thing went wrong!

It said it couldn't complete the operation because it couldn't find the registry key!

Did I not do a step somewhere somehow?

    Please help this old taffer!

p.s.: To some of you out there in this WONDERFUL forum my name may sound vaguely familiar, there is a definite reason for this!
    Muwahahha!

And I am to see that ttlg (and the thief community!) is still alive and kikin butt!

Running the game once before installing the SU should do it. With Steam the keys only get created on first run and they get deleted again if you make Steam verify the installation.

    problem solved!

    Thanks snobel!

BUT - twas unnecessary after all! TTLG's magic is still potent!
(right after posting my problem I found where the game was installed (in my Steam folder - D'OH!)
so I just directed the install to there - it seems to be working!)

TTLG kung fu iz da best!

One thing though - no FM's are showing in Sneaky's pop up and since I am just playing the upgraded game atm
I have just been clicking on the "skip FM" button. Am I doing this correctly?

Good that you got it figured out...

You're doing it right - Steam uses a special version of the T3.exe file, which makes it impossible to have separate desktop icons for the game and FMs (or rather, they both work the same).

If you get tired of seeing FMSel, then disable the "always launch FMSel" option in the tweak tool. You can turn it back on when you're ready for some FMs.

    Thanks

    Ok! Thanks again!

I love this site! So many great peeps in here!
(Digi, Saturnine,(if they ARE still here!), Gloria Creep (sweet, talented lady),
    bikerdude, darthslair, et al!)

OH, one other thing snobel - I thought the upgrade was supposed to eliminate
all the loading from one area to another? (in the city)

Only the proper missions have been merged. The city maps are too complex in general, with all the stuff happening on different days. But Beleg has said he might attempt merging small sections, such as Garrett's apartment building, with the connecting city part.

They haven't been seen in months/years, both Digi & Sats work in the game industry so RL takes up most of their time.

Yeah bikerdude, I knew that! That's why I said that!

If any two people deserved to get paying gigs in the industry - those two damn sure did!!!
    (summa da best FMs! EVEH!)
((I'd sure have loved to have played a whole series of CoSaS FMs! ))

Now back on topic - snobel , I'm getting something weird in my game!

When I select a health potion from my gear I get some weird little icon and either a lowercase l or a 1
(it's hard to tell even at a relatively high resolution!) on the lower left corner of my screen, and I can't
    use the potion!
And below both it says "none" and then fades out.

    What's gone wrong?

UH OH - problem is even bigger! I can't use any of my gear! Not even my weapons!!
    taffin PAYNE! (oops, wrong game!)

Hmm, problem solved! I "zoned" into a different city map area and everything was back to normal!
    Why did it do this?

bikerdude, can you guess who I am?
    pm me, okay?

Hmm, weird. Can you get the problem back by returning to the same spot, or by loading a save? If so, please upload a savegame somewhere...

The "none" thing sounds like the high-FPS bug, which should have been fixed. You didn't change the "max refresh rate" or "max frame rate" settings in the tweak tool, did you?

    Nope

Nope snobel, I left them on their default settings.

I'll go back to the same spot but I doubt it'll happen again, because I am wondering if was
a corrupted save in that area of the map?
(I have a bad habit of over overwriting the darn things )

And the minute I zoned and saw it was okay now I made a new FRESH save and deleted all
    the previous ones.

BUT, there's another weird thing happening in some of the shops! I try to buy an item and
    the quantity slider doesn't respond!
