Thread: Sneaky Upgrade: Unofficial patch for Thief 3

Aha. Maybe when using Steam I should try to assume the perspective of someone who actually likes it. To me it's a convenient way to install and otherwise a nuisance.

@mrdudeman: You can try version 1.1.5.2 - that version could be launched through Steam at least.

Edit: See this post for a better solution.

Some confusion on the SneakyTweaker settings

I have some general questions about some of the tweaker settings. Firstly, under the "Sneaky Upgrade" tab, in the display settings there is a value entry for menu cropping; it says it can be set to your aspect ratio to have loading screens fit the entire width of the screen. My Aspect ratio is 16:9 but the value maxes out at 2.00 (which is also a whole number and not a ratio).

I cant progress into the game to even see what these values do, which leads to my next confusion. I've disabled all the main menu replacers in the tweaker (minimalist project as well as the texture pack), but when opening the game the minimalist main menu remains and there is some substantial audio skipping and framerate lag (seemingly >1 FPS). I previously set my res to 3840x2160 and my FPS was in the triple digits on my initial couple of runs before launching the tweaker. Now I can't access any menus due the lag to lower it. I don't know for sure that my res is causing the lag on the menu (770 and 4690k btw) but it seems likely to me. I know I can use an INI to change the res, but I'm not sure what it is.

My last question - I'd like to try using a gamepad to play just to see if it's comfortable to lean back in my chair with. I'm using an Xone controller wirelessly, the tweaker uses joy1,joy2,joy3 etc in order to establish different controller inputs, how do I know which joyxyz values are assigned to each button without trial and error of opening and reopening the game?

Sorry for the lengthy post, I really appreciate your work (and the whole community's really) keeping the series relatively fresh.

    __

The Thief 3 Gold package is what is causing the issue. The game works perfectly when that package is excluded from the installation. Any tips to get it to work? I'm using a Steam installation for what it's worth.

The value to use is 16/9, i.e. 1.78.

This may be an unfortunate side effect of using the tweaker while the game is running.

That's very weird. Would you mind setting the log level to Dump in the tweaker's Advanced page, then start the game to the menu and quit. Copy the 'Current' log, which you can find through the start menu. Then re-enable T3G and repeat. Upload both logs somewhere.

After that I'd recommend that you reinstall the SU, removing both the mods and the options files when asked. Then try enabling only T3G. Keep Steam shut down initially - it shouldn't matter, but you never know... Be careful what settings you change on the display page. "FPS was in the triple digits" sounds like you disabled the frame rate limiter? Don't do that - you'll get various problems at frame rates above ~100.

To be safe, shut down the game while changing settings in the tweaker, especially if you're going to enable/disable the MP or CTP menu video.

My last question - I'd like to try using a gamepad to play just to see if it's comfortable to lean back in my chair with. First, set up the controller in the game's options - the Inputs tab. That should be enough to be able to play with a controller, although you'll need the keyboard and mouse occasionally.

The tweaker provides some additional settings: Figure out from the Inputs tab which Joy<n> corresponds to buttons you want secondary functions on. Then set up those functions in the tweaker. (You'll probably want the hold modifiers.) Then go back in the game and assign the four extra functions by holding down the buttons you assigned hold modifiers. (It sounds complicated but is easy enough once you've tried it.)

Setting up mouse and escape key emulation in the tweaker will allow you to play without needing a mouse and keyboard.

    Gamepad is the issue.

I should have done some more extensive trials before my original post. I know now that this problem ONLY arises when the gamepad tab has the "mouse emulation" set to anything other than off, AND my Xone controller (wireless) is on.

If I start the game with the gamepad off, but the mouse emulation set to left/right, the cursor is drawn to the upper left hand corner of the screen. If I turn it on, it has the stuttering. I can stop it instantly by pulling the batteries. With the settings turned to off, I can safely (though pointlessly) turn the gamepad on without any issue.

Not a big deal either way. The gamepad idea was nice but ultimately it wasn't the main draw of the package for me.

Thanks for reporting back. I had hoped that Xbox One controllers would be similar enough to Xbox 360 controllers that they would just work - no such luck, apparently...

Thank you for the update. I see a bug fix related to corrupt savegames. I'll try this new build with my savegame that was causing crashes...

Unless it's a save which gives you a 'this saved game is damaged' message when you select it, then there'll be no change. The feature doesn't fix anything, it just allows you to attempt to load bad saves.

It's really only for testing, last-resort cases and possibly for transferring saves to a new version of T3G. (And it has to be enabled first.)

Ok, thanks for clarifying it. Anyway, I'll report the result of the test later.

    Windows 10 Compatability

Hello, first of all thanks for a great upgrade that allows me to play thief 3 flawlessly on Windows 10 in 4k resolution, and solved the frozen mouse issue in the menu of the game, I would like to comment though and this issue has been posted before, The brightness slider will not work in Windows 10, I have the latest sneaky upgrade 1.1.6, I did read that the slider may work with 1.1.1 version, but I cant find this version anywhere, I tried all the usual troubleshooting of course and to no avail, I don't think altering the values in the default ini file would make any difference, it is the only issue in playing the game and most areas are far too dark to see where Garret is going, I could turn the overall brightness of the TV up, but would prefer to make the change of brightness in game as it should be, I remember that the game without sneaky upgrade worked fully in Windows 8, so the brightness problem must be confined to Win 10, it would be great if there was a fix for the brightness issue in Win 10. Regards

The patch contains various bugfixes and game improvements such as widescreen support, and provides some GUI tweaks. It also enables the use of the FMSel FM loader frontend with Thief 3 and optionally bundles the most important T3 mods. It works with the GOG and Steam versions of the game.

Original game bugs and issues that have been fixed or improved:

    • Multicore fix prevents the intro video from looping
    • New missions and restarted missions will use your chosen difficulty instead of Normal/Easy
    • The City sections are now played on your chosen difficulty instead of always being on Normal
    • Frame rate and refresh rate limiting fixes broken lockpicking, ladder climbing and wall flattening
    • Some speed-up of level loading, especially with vsync on
    • Fix for the desktop being visible during level loading on Vista and up
    • The game will no longer crash when binding an analogue controller through the keybinds screen
    • Fix for controller axes sometimes being set up reverted
    • Fix for a crash that could happen when using the game's multisampling option
    • Fix for the mouse freezing or becoming invisible when using large font size settings in Windows

    Game improvements:

    • All resolutions reported by the system, plus an optional custom display mode, are available from the options screen. The aspect ratio is shown as well
    • In widescreen the horizontal view is extended, instead of cropping off the top and bottom
    • The field-of-view can be specified by the user. The setting will work with both the original game and fanmissions, with existing savegames and with missions which use scripted FOV changes. FOV adjustment includes the mechanical eye and bow zoom
    • The HUD and menus are shown correctly, regardless of resolution and aspect ratio. In 3-monitor modes, the HUD can be constricted to the center monitor
    • The main menu and loading screens are shown correctly, at 4:3 aspect. The proper movies, which are letterboxed, are allowed to crop to fit the monitor (up to 16:9)
    • Take screenshots with descriptive file names, and automatically with savegames
    • XBox360-type gamepads are working, the triggers are mapped to buttons. Support for up to 16 gamepad buttons using modifiers. Mouse and escape key emulation

As an FM loader, the emphasis is on ease of use and reliability:

    • Easy to set up – besides this patch there is nothing to install or configure
    • The contents of your game installation folder are never changed. (GarrettLoader has a habit of messing up your installation)
    • Works even if the game is installed in Program Files
    • Automatically installs custom conversations. (Used in the FM All the World's a Stage)
    • Fixes for crash on save and crash on exit in certain FMs, and for the mechanical eye zoom not working in many FMs
    • Fix for the in-game loot list showing wrong values and total in certain FMs
    • The FMSel supplied with the installer is slightly improved over the NewDark version

Additionally some optional tweaks have been incorporated:

    • Mirror and/or scale down the main HUD
    • Minor HUD and GUI tweaks: Remove loading screen tips, mechanical eye overlay, main menu version text, "Nothing" texts, loot percentage, purple fog, 'bouncing arrows', junk item flashing and the lockpicking HUD
    • Alternative background modes for the readable/map and pause screens
    • Better mouse response and removed motion blur, adjust mouse sensitivity
    • More realistic physics, gravity multiplier
    • Scale the difficulty up or down. (Can be set to zero for a 'notarget' cheat)
    • Disable auto-raising of the blackjack and dagger
    • Reduce or remove headbobbing
    • No switch to third person in death
    • Classic speed (walk by default, run qualifier) and a speed multiplier
    • Decrease or increase the ambient fog or ambient light in any level
    • Human-readable savegame folder names
    • Borderless windowed mode

All tweaks are disabled by default.

    Download:

The standard edition includes the SU patch and the SneakyTweaker tool. The fat edition additionally includes the mods The Minimalist Project, The Collective Texture Pack (a.k.a. John P), Thief 3 Gold and Briefing Videos. Please see those threads or the included readme files for more information.

Current version 1.1.6: Standard (mirror) - Fat (mirror) - Readme - Release post

Previous versions can be found here. Please report it if you find that an older version works for you, while the current version doesn't.

    Installation:

    • It's recommended to reboot before installation, especially for the fat edition
    • It's also recommended to disable the virus checker during installation
    • Advanced users should consult the list of additional installation options in the readme
    • Execute the installer
    • After installation, run the original game once and select your preferred resolution in the Options screen. (The patched game uses a private setting for the resolution)
    • Steam users should read Additional notes below
    • Run the SneakyTweaker tool for setting up tweaks and mods

The installer will set up a start menu group with shortcuts to the readmes, the options folder, installed FMs folder etc. By default it will also create three icons on your desktop: A yellow glyph icon for the original game, a cyan version for the fan mission selector and a green version for the SneakyTweaker tool. NOTE: Original shortcuts will launch the unpatched game - use the new desktop icon!

The patch has its own configuration file, SneakyOptions.ini. Normally this should be changed only through the tweak tool, but for advanced options manual editing is necessary. In that case it can be found through the Sneaky Upgrade start menu group (in Local Folders).

    Fan missions:

Beginner's quick start guide to playing FMs using the FMSel loader frontend: (To play using GL, just make sure GL is installed before installing the Sneaky Upgrade.)

    • Create a folder for downloaded FMs in a neutral location. A subfolder of your Downloads folder will do
    • Go to a site which hosts Thief 3 FMs, and download some into that folder
    • Start FMSel through the cyan desktop icon.
    • A dialog will ask for the FM archive path. Select the folder from above
    • The FMSel window will now show the titles of the downloaded FMs. Right-click an entry and select View Info File to see the FM's readme
    • To start the mission, click Play FM (or Start FM if you're ready for a full play-through)
    • See the FMSel readme for more detailed information

    Additional notes:

The patch expects an original installation, the original T3UI.ini in particular. Existing tweaks may or may not be compatible.

It's not necessary to install the official 1.1 patch before installing the SU.

Steam users should disable updates for the game and refrain from doing game cache validation, because it would remove the patch. Be sure to run the game once prior to installation, otherwise the game's registry values may not be set.

If you want to use TDS Tweaker to change frob colour, then you have to get this updated version of Myagi's patcher. Copy it into the T3Tweak folder and rename it MyagiPatcher.exe. It's recommended to use the built-in tweak instead of TDS Tweaker to remove the loot percentage.

If you have existing savegames, and they appear to have gone missing after installing the patch, then chances are that your SaveGamePath registry value is set to a location in your private user folder. (The original default path is in your Documents folder). Such paths are diverted to the public Documents folder for the unpatched game, but not anymore after patching. Either locate the new folder and move your savegames there, or edit your registry to use the old path. Also note that Thief 3 Gold will use a separate folder for savegames, since original saves are not compatible.

There are a few known issues - nothing major, though. There is a list in the readme. Hopefully they will be fixed in a future version.

    You're welcome...

No, and vsync is broken too.

I have the latest sneaky upgrade 1.1.6, I did read that the slider may work with 1.1.1 version, but I cant find this version anywhere
Hint: There's a link to older versions in the middle of that long post you quoted. But don't bother - it won't change anything. (It was 1.1.0 that at one point could serve as a fall-back but not anymore.)

I tried all the usual troubleshooting of course and to no avail, I don't think altering the values in the default ini file would make any difference
No, it's very unlikely that ini file changes could fix it.

it is the only issue in playing the game and most areas are far too dark to see where Garret is going, I could turn the overall brightness of the TV up, but would prefer to make the change of brightness in game as it should be
Aren't there settings in the graphics driver control panel that you can use?

I remember that the game without sneaky upgrade worked fully in Windows 8, so the brightness problem must be confined to Win 10
T3 has the same problems on Win10 that it has on Win7-8.x if you run it as administrator. And it's not just T3 but also Deus Ex: Invisible War and possibly other DX8 games. It's probably Microsoft's way of saying "we don't care about DX8 anymore."

It may be possible to find a work-around for the brightness issue but I can't even attempt that until I eventually succumb to the will of the Empire and updowngrade my laptop to Win10.

After a short test this seems very promising!

The bad news is that the SU-patched game won't start in fullscreen above 1024x768 - forcing it in the dgVoodoo settings won't work either. But the original game will start fullscreen in 1600x1200 so it must be an incompatibility with one of my patches. Hopefully it can be fixed...

The very good news is that if I stick to 1024x768 I can run the game as administrator on Win8.1 and brightness and vsync are working!

@martek00: (Or anybody else on Win10.) To try it, get this zip and copy MS\D3D8.dll into the System folder in your T3 installation. It should work with the default settings - there'll be a watermark in the lower right. You can run the unpatched game by clicking T3.exe in the System folder and check if the brightness setting is working in fullscreen. (Or run the SU-patched game as usual. If it starts up windowed, try 1024x768.)

Edit: If the game crashes with an error message, additionally get this zip and copy the DLL it contains into the System folder as well. Then it should work.

also note that a new version has been released just a few days ago (2.51), make sure to use that, looks like the DX8 stuff has received a bunch of fixes and improvements.

That fixes the brightness problem in Win 10. Patched and unpatched versions both run OK at 1600x900 - no windowed problems.

How do I check vsync (NVIDIA GT 630)?

That's excellent news, thanks a lot for trying that out.

For testing vsync, unless you've set a global override for it in the graphics driver, using the in-game option should do. You may need Fraps or similar for FPS display. If you start the Inn mission and look into the wall behind you at the start, the FPS overlay will show 90 with vsync off and (probably) 60, 75 or 85 with vsync on. (This is with the SU, with default settings for the frame rate limiting.) If you get 90 with vsync on, then it's still broken.

I have windows 10 and I can tell you the fix for brightness didn't work. In fact with that file in the system folder in thief 3 directory the game won't even load up. I removed it and all is well. Wonder why it won't work for me? Windows 10 laptop with hd card is what I have. Any ideas?

    T3 Sneaky upgrade mouse problems

Hello fellow taffers. I'm pretty sure I used to play T3 on my current PC just fine. I did a clean install and used the Sneaky upgrade which means it loads up fine but my mouse won't move the cursor around. Is there something obvious I should do to get it to work. Also it continues to run the DVD drive after the game has been terminated, really annoying.

    Current PC: Win7HP Sp1
    i5-3570k Quad Core
    3.40Ghz

    Many thanks

Do you have the Windows font size set to something larger than normal? This is a classic T3 bug that the SU should fix in most cases - but apparently not for you...

Go to the Advanced page in the SneakyTweaker tool and change the last value there from 144 to 1 (force on). Then click OK and restart the game and see if it has been fixed.
