Thanks for making this awesome patch/upgrade, I couldn't even get past the training level due to the lockpicking bug but now it's not a problem. I was wondering though if you could add an option to the tweaks for infinite arrows and items?

I'd like to add more tweaks and cheats like that but it probably won't happen soon. For the time being the focus is on cleaning up and restructuring the project.

I'm trying again this patch with the latest Windows 10 release (virtual machine). The game unpatched works, but as soon as I patch it with the Sneaky Upgrade doesn't start. It neither does a black screen, just kills itself in the Task Manager in a matter of few seconds... Vodoo's DX emulation files do not help...

Here's the beta: Full, update. It's mostly fixes and a few bits ported from the Visible Upgrade:

• Heavy-handed fix to make brightness and vsync work on Win10
• Option to disable the multisampling fix
• All binaries linked statically, to reduce installation trouble
• Installation option to make the Steam overlay work
• Moving texture files around when configuring John P is now more robust
• The 'mouse improvements' tweak has been reduced to a 'no rotation blur' tweak. The other part of the original tweak, zeroing MouseLagThreshold, is now always active (with an option to disable)
• Enumerate resolutions in a way that will not conflict with certain DLL wrappers
• Log use of local wrapper DLLs

The Windows 10 fix comes from this wrapper by Sergey P. As it turns out the Win10 d3d8.dll has a function for enabling 'crappy graphics mode'. The fix overwrites code in the DLL to make it disable instead... That's somewhat fragile and may break with a Windows update - a couple of checks was added to detect that.
It's also a bit worrying that, although there's an SU option to disable the fix, after I ran it the first time I haven't been able to switch it off. When inspecting d3d8.dll in a debugger the code is original, but brightness and vsync still work.
For these reasons this fix will probably be an opt-in installer option. In this beta it's on by default, if you don't want it open SneakyOptions.ini and set DisableWindowShimFix=True after installation, before running the game.

Hopefully none, but sometimes people report the game crashing on startup, or opening a in window instead of fullscreen, and most times setting multisampling to 1 fixes it. So the fix is incomplete but I can't really do better because I can't reproduce those crashes. The option is for those cases where changing the multisampling setting doesn't fix it - I want to make sure I haven't made things worse somehow.

No, you have to add it to the Testing section in the ini file: DisableMultisamplingFix=True. I should have mentioned, but it's (hopefully) of little use...

Yes - because the default setting in T3G is different from the default for the original game. T3G has a separate ini file with settings overriding the main settings.

Not as far as I know. Searching a bit just now I found this, which describes it well. It's apparently fullscreen windowed mode pretending to be real fullscreen. According to that post it can be fixed with the compatibility toolkit, which would be much cleaner. Edit: No, that's only pre-D3D8. Damn.

Is it normal for Garrett Animations to have the bow draw animation to be way off? When I disable that mod and leave Minimalist on it is better but the arrow is still knocked slightly below the aiming reticle on the bow then jumps to the appropriate position. I don't remember these issues when I played around with these mods independently years ago.

Try disabling 'mouse integration', or something similar. You may also have to set the Mouse Sensitivity tweak to something very low. (Those two things will fix it in VirtualBox.)

The installer option should be unchecked for the overlay to work. It will then use the Steam version of T3.exe instead of the SU replacement, and install the patched game under the original name, T3Main.exe. If you have a file named Thief3.exe, then it's probably not installed right.

As I remember it, the Steam version of T3.exe will filter out any arguments, so if FMSel starts up it's another indication of that option having been set wrong. Using the Steam T3.exe you'll have to set the "always show FMSel" option on the tweaker's FM page to get FMSel to show.

I've clean installed the game and the patch several times, leaving the option unchecked. Removed the -fm argument and checked the tweaker option instead. No file named Thief3.exe. Still no overlay. I would love to get the overlay working so I can finally use the Steam Controller natively, instead of relying on the external desktop configuration.

I am curios: Does you steam controller work as intended without patching?
If not, then I'd start at Steam support; it's not snobel's job to fix that ;-)

Much to my surprise the overlay doesn't work for me either. After doing some experiments I'll have to conclude that I've conflated things with the VU tests and never got around to actually testing the SU overlay after porting the code. Probably means I should get more sleep, because my memory of seeing the overlay pop-up on top of the T3 menu is very vivid. I'm very sorry for getting people's hope up.

The overlay is explicitly disabled in Steam's appinfo.vdf file. Apparently that was once a text file, which you could edit to get it working. Now it's a binary file which is checked for consistency - if you hex-edit the "disableoverlay" entry the .vdf file gets replaced in online mode and T3 is not visible in your Steam library in offline mode. I also tried hex-editing the two Steam DLLs containing that string, but of course Steam will have none of that and the originals get reinstated on start-up, even in offline mode.

The only way I found to get the overlay working with T3 was to trick Steam into thinking it was launching DX2. At least that proves that the overlay does work for T3:


So we can either hope for someone coming up with an editor for .vdf files, or someone will have to try their luck with Steam's technical support.

I don't think that the game exe can do much with the .vdf file, since overlay is imposed on the game by Steam somehow.

Luckily it turns out there is a way, and it's dead easy: Install the patch, then add the game a second time as a non-Steam game. (Browse to the Steam install and select the T3Main.exe file.)

For me it showed up in the library as "Thief 3 FM Selector" for some reason, but that's easy to change of course. It also crashed on exit to the desktop the first time I ran it but not on the following 4-5 runs.

The only drawback is that it can't be automated in the installer. (Unless the Steam client takes command line args?)

Tried Virtualbox and the game worked smoothly, but that virtual machine sucked since it had not the widescreen option, so I've decided to come back again to VMWare and giving a chance again to it. You was right again, disabling "mouse integration" has worked: right click on C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation\vmware.exe -> Properties -> Compatiblity tab -> Tick 'Disable display scaling on high DPI settings'.

Now testing your last Fat release.

strange, after having installed Sneaky Upgrade the flickering on the buttons begun, both in the sneaky and the original exes... Uninstalled then and the game turned back ok.
