In borderless mode NO, it's why it has been introduced
But of course you can set the max frame rate to 60, just to consume less power.

Did anyone make it work in Linux using Lutris? I tried this official installer as well https://lutris.net/games/thief-deadly-shadows/ but when it runs sneaky upgrade nothing happens, it gets stuck somewhere. I'm on Ubuntu 23.04.

I tried it myself - on Ubuntu 22.04. It went like this:

    • Installed Lutris from the repo
    • Installed the game (without mods) from GOG via Lutris
    • Ran it once to make sure the registry values were set up
    • Used Lutris' "run exe inside Wine prefix" function to install the SU 1.1.10 (with all-default options)
    • Ran the game from Lutris - crashed
    • Opened Bash through Lutris, navigated to the game's System folder and ran "wine T3.exe" - game ran fine
    • Restarted Lutris - now the game runs fine from there too

Can't change brightness in borderless mode, is there a fix/something I missed?

There's no fix for that. Brightness is changed using a D3D function which is tied to a hardware feature and which affects the whole display. So in windowed mode it would change brightness for everything on your desktop.

Just use crosire d3d8to9 + reshade
    But the default is fine.

Ah yeah, I know what you mean. Call of Duty 1 has that issue too sorta.

Thanks, that works good for me.

    SU 1.1.11 pre-release

Four years and change since the last release, a new version is finally ready. A couple of new tweaks and some fixes but the vast majority of the work went into Thief 3 Gold - see the separate post linked below.

If things work out, the actual release will happen around 1 SeptemberOctober.
    __________

This beta (mirror) has the following changes relative to 1.1.10:

    The code patch and installer:

    • New tweak to auto-equip the blackjack instead of the dagger when you click attack with no weapon selected. (On by default in the MP)
    • New 'no idle breathing' tweak
    • A new tweaker page for difficulty settings - more fine-grained control
    • For new installations of the SU, two quicksaves will now be used. Also, clear-text savegame names by default
    • The Options screen multisampling slider now shows "OK" for the settings that are actually valid, and the full range of 16 values is available
    • The 'Lower res while using mouselook' option is now off by default for all installs, to allow depth buffer calculations with ReShade >= 4.8.0
    • 'Direct load' is now off by default. (Could cause crashes during quickload)
    • Press Shift+Ctrl+Alt+End in any order to end the current mission. (Previously, End had to be pressed last)
    • Fix for the option to disable gamepad phantom input. (Config key mismatch)
    • Fix for the jerky camera when exiting unpaused reading mode
    • Fix for the installer almost always replacing a local d3d8.dll. Should now leave a manually installed DLL alone
    • Fix for SneakyTweaker going into an endless loop when the Installed Mods folder was empty
    • Updated the bundled d3d8to9 DLL to commit a1f11b3e
    • It is now possible to set up a self-contained and portable install (but no installer support yet)

    Thief 3 Gold:

    Collective Texture Pack:

    • New option to disable textures specific to the training mission - for completeness, all textures can now be disabled

    The Fonts mod:

    • Fix for the tweaker always showing individual font textures as enabled on startup

Will this affect the location of SneakyOptions.ini? Or will it still always be located at the path specified in HKLM/Software/Ion Storm/Thief - Deadly Shadows/SaveGamePath?

A portable install will ignore the registry completely but the Options folder is then always in the root of the game install. From the SU readme:

As of 1.1.11, a second options file, Sneaky.ini can be placed in the System folder in the game install,
    containing the following:

    [Install]
    IgnoreSaveGamePath=True

This will make the game ignore also the SaveGamePath registry value and instead expect to find the Options,
SaveGames* and ScreenShots* folders in the root of the game install. Installed mods and FMs can be moved
here too, by changing two lines in SneakyOptions.ini to "InstallPath=..\Installed FMs" and "InstallPath=..\
Installed Mods" respectively. This makes the install portable.
To also move FM archives into the install, Place them in a subfolder, e.g. "FanMissions" and replace a line in
fmsel.ini in the Installed FMs folder with "ArchiveRoot=..\FanMissions"
It should be possible to set up the paths from the installer Edit: Not really. But you can provide the absolute paths for easier manual editing later.

Oops, missed the beta link. Thanks for pointing out the new info. I'll add support to AngelLoader for this.

The 1.1.11 release is now up on Mod DB. I realize that the chores associated with doing a proper release are one reason it's been four years since the last one. So to keep that to a minimum I'll just link to the release article there.

New T3 Gold fixes, which happened between the beta and the actual release, are marked in bold on the updated list here. They include the missing patient journals in the Cradle and the First Mate's log and the Tavern conversation in the Docks.

The first post has not been updated - get the files through Mod DB for now.

I'm getting a constant 100 FPS with SU and 120 without, but the game still looks choppy and jittery. Makes no sense. Don't remember it being like this before, though the last time I played this was in 2014. Any ideas?

EDIT: You know, it actually seems like it's the camera/sensitivity of the camera+movement that makes things seem unsmooth. There's no indication that there's anything going within the environment - guards, the swinging signpost, and the sky in the beginning all animate fluidly. It's only when I start running around that it looks weird. Why is this?

Also, disabling third person in the SU config does nothing - I'm still able to hit "V" and switch.
Crazy how shit repeats. Back at square one with the same problem I posted about nearly 5 years ago. Disabling GSYNC doesn't work this time, though. It's weird, I hadn't touched DS since early last year and it ran fine, but now it's got that same unsmooth, jittery/laggy game feeling I had when I posted this. I wonder if it's because I upgraded to Windows 11? I got it mostly fixed using an ancient version of DGVoodoo but it caps my FPS at 60 which is an eyesore. If I could get it to 100 we'd be golden but I don't know how.

EDIT: Figured out how to uncap it but at 100 FPS (which SU caps at) it's jittery/laggy again. This is driving me crazy.

EDIT 2: Weirdly it only seems to be laggy/jittery at 90-100 FPS. Why might that be? Also the game is smoother for me without SU than with it. I have no idea how that's possible. I thought SU was supposed to improve performance?

Game is NOT intended to run over 85/90 FPS due to internal tick bound to framerate. Just as in the original release (85 was the max monitor refresh rate those long times gone)

  19. #1819
Well, I'm fairly certain I ran it at least at the Sneaky Upgrade max of 100 with no issues. I have no clue what the issue could be aside from an OS upgrade and newer PC parts.

I'm hoping snobel can help with this when he returns, but I also noticed the health and damage components of the MP tweaks do not do anything. No matter what I did, I couldn't get them to affect enemies, even when starting a new game each time. They were clearly being affected by the other tweaks because I noticed their senses and combat speed were being affected, but the guard at the beginning of the game took 4 arrows on Expert and did the same amount of damage no matter what the difficulty settings were set to.

Nothing I can do, sorry. Either stick to the defaults, or set both to 0 and see if you have better luck using an external tool for frame rate limiting.

It's possible something broke as a result of the main difficulty settings getting more detailed control. Will check...

  21. #1821
Oh, I meant help with the difficulty settings not working. The choppiness/jitter/lag when I move is something I'll just correct by playing at 85 FPS. It's not ideal by any means but I it's preferable to the alternative. But yeah I would love to know why some of the difficulty settings work and the other ones don't.

I finished Deadly Shadows on Twitch earlier this year without too many issues. Eventually to force AA on I started using dgVoodoo2, I replaced the .dlls from Sneaky Upgrade with dgVoodoo2.

Wish I could tell you more specifically what I did but this was back in like March or April. I don't think I used the tweaker thar comes with dgVoodoo2 much.

I tried DXVK but sadly it completely broke AA

  23. #1823
Yeah, I was hoping dgvoodoo would be the solution as well, but while it *helped* the issue, it didn't seem to solve it like it did last time. I don't know how you can not touch a game or its files for over a year and it runs fine that time, then you have issues the next time you run it. Gotta be OS or hardware-related. But yeah I also don't know how the game doesn't have that choppy/laggy movement at 120fps without the Sneaky Upgrade, but with it, it does it from 90-100fps. I am beyond baffled.

A lot of old games are sensitive - and might be dependent upon - the refresh rate.
As a general idea, anything that runs on pre-DX9, should be capped to 60 FPS.

  25. #1825
Yes, that's true, but I am positive I ran it just fine at 100fps (the Sneaky Upgrade cap) before with no issues. It's something else. I also noticed the link here:

With dgvoodoo, you must copy D3D8.dll within the "MS" subdirectory of the zip to your Deadly Shadows "System" directory. Running the configuration utility included in the zip will let you further customize behavior, such as the window mode and the ability to disable the watermark that is enabled by default. With d3d8to9, you just need to copy the downloaded file to your Deadly Shadows "System" directory. While either of these may solve your problem, I would recommend dgvoodoo as an initial attempt since I originally was experiencing behavior similar to your description, and using dgvoodoo remedied it.

If that fails or if you experience other issues after trying this, experimenting with the Troubleshooting section in SneakyTweaker may help.
No longer works -- I'm wondering if I needed that specific d3d8.dll in that dead link. I tried following it to the dgvoodoo2 site, release 55-4 or whatever and used that but it didn't help.
