    Greatest Fan Missions Timeline.

I'm new to this forum but have been a fan of thief for a long time. I really enjoy the fan missions but as you all are aware there are quite a few out there and some are better than others. It can be quite frustrating to find good missions so I have come up with an incomplete list of fan missions that of the highest ranked for each year since fan missions have been made.

The rules I made were that the top 15 missions of each year had to score above a 7 unless it was part of a story series. The reason for 15 missions is because their are roughly 15 missions in both Thief Gold and Thief 2, so 15 roughly made a full title. I have spent many hours studying review sites such as "The Keep of Metal and Gold,"The Circle," and so forth to get this list so enjoy.

It is also worth noting I have played all these missions. and the list only goes as far as I have played.

The list work as follows. Rank number. Name of FM. FM Score then listing by type. The listing by type will go first lists local then expected challenge type. Note a (Horror Element) means that you may not openly fight undead or monsters but rather an element to the mission or story that is spooky (Such as the cthulhu idol that drive Lord Edmund mad).

    Thief Gold 1999
Was only able to produce a top 10 with this list

    1. Bloodstone Prison (9.83) Prison - Horror
    2. The Death of Garret (8.75) Caves/Manor - Guard
    3. Lord Edmund Entertains (8.67) Manor - Guard (Horror Element)
    4. Shunned: Fistral's Tale (8.5) Manor - Horror
    5. Autumn in Lampfire Hills (8.42) Village - Guard (Horror Element)
    6. The Awakening (8.0) Manor/City - Guard/Hammerite
    7. The Treasury (7.5) Fort - Guard/Pagan/Hammerite
    8. Circle of Strain 2 (7.33) Manor - Guard
    9. Circle of Strain 1 (7.25) Manor - Guard
    10. Inheritance (7.0) Manor - Guard

    Thief Gold 2000
Missions in parenthesis are lower rank missions that belong to a set and are associated with the mission above them.

A score of (6of9) means the mission got a score of 6 based on 9 votes.

    1. Calendra's Cistern (9.38) City - Guard/Horror
    2. Events in Highrock (9.33) City - Guard/Horror
    (Mage's Area) (7.0) Catacombs - Horror
    3. Circle of Strain 3 (8.83) City/Manor - Guard (Horror Element)
    4. The Vigil (8.67) City/Crypt - Guard/Hammerite (Horror Element)
    5. Turning the Tables (8.5) Manor - Guard
    6. Tears of Blood (8.5) Prison - Hammerite

    10. Ranstall Keep (8.0) Village/Castle - Horror
    11. Hammerhead: Return to the Docks (8.0) Harbor - Hammerite
(The Docks) (6.25) Harbor - Guard

    Thief Gold 2001-2010

Gold Missions get sparse after 2000. so to get the full 15 I collapsed nearly 10 years.

The Golden Books counts as 3 missions. A score of (6of9) means the mission got a score of 6 based on 9 votes.

    Non GarretLoader
    1. Lorgan's Web (9.25) City/Manor - Guard/Hammerite
    2. The Saint of Redmound (9.0) Church/Catacombs - Hammerite/Horror

    1-3. Calendra's Legacy (11)
    4. L' Arsene (10)
    5. Deceptive Perception (10)
    6. Karras's Diary: Prophecies of Gold (9.25)

After much consideration I present a notable series released about this time
    Notable Series of 2002

    1. Lord Ashton Series (8of93) GL(8of173) -8 Missions strong
each mission individually of the series generally received ratings of either 7or8.

From Here on in things get interesting as I pretty much run out of score from thief missions and the "Keep of MetalandGold" I am now relying on the player scores from the circle and using a new cruder trick. Next to every payer score is a number, this number represent the number of hits the FM received here on the forums. The idea being that the more people who flock to something the more popular it is and the better it must be. Mind you its not the best method but hey it seemed to work.

You should also add missions like Ruins of Originia, 7th Crystal, Rose Cottage, 7 Shades of Mercury, Drakula, Bathory, King's Story etc...
Among recently released ones are great Finals At The Academy, Upside Down, Black Frog, Better Off Dead etc... Oh... I don't remember all of them. So many good fms.

In time, in time. many of those missions I have not come to the years they were made yet. 7th Crystal for example is a 2001 Thief 2 mission.

This is great work LordEtern! Just the kind of list I was looking for recently. There are so many 'most favorite', 'best ever', 'top 10' threads out there, but this is more organized and using the "official" rankings.

    Keep up the good work!

Agreed. I've also spotted one or two I haven't played, or at least don't remember playing. Looking forward to the next bunch.

You might find it hard to find reviews and rating for the missions released in the past couple of years.
The review megathread might come in useful. Good luck.

There actually haven't been many reviews (as far as ratings go) since 2004, so you might hit a pretty big roadblock there. Also, keep in mind ratings from thiefmissions.com and The Keep of Metal and Gold are just one person's opinion, whereas The Circle (I believe) is based on an average of multiple people's votes.

    How it works.

I know that many missions later on don't really have reviews so will have to probably use forum popularity. Its a road I will figure out when I cross it.

as for the score. I usually take the one from ThiefMissions as it does try to take the average score from both The "keep of metal and gold" and The "Circle" as well as give its own. If a mission does not have a score I will look it up on both sites as sometimes they do have scores that are not listed on Thief Missions. In fact I usually look at all missions on all sites just to make sure everything is lining up.

If a mission truly does not have a score I go use the player based rating on the Circle hence where the 6of80 or whatever score comes from. The reason I chose not to use these scores primarily is because many many missions don't have many people reviewing missions so a score of 9of5 or 3of1 is really not a very accurate score.

True the other sources are only one person giving a score. But it comes from a more reliable and professional source where someone has given the review based on a thorough analysis where as the scores given from the players scores on the circle you don't know who or why someone may have given a score of 9 or 1, it could have been on a whim or just personal taste.

    Momentum

Since I getting a lot of good feed back I have posted an updated for 2001 Thief 2. These missions I am currently trying to play through myself, so I don't really have an idea of what they are about yet.

    Well the subject is interesting.

Round about the beginning of May, the anniversary of a thread by uncadonego entitled 'Who are you' is due. If I remember, I'll be bumping that and demanding that you, and some other new names I've noticed recently, contribute to the thread.

    2002 update

2002 thief 2 list is now up.

    Note:
(It takes 3-4 hours sorting through every mission and comparing them with dates and scores from all major FM sites.)

    2003

The 2003 list now up with a notable 2002 series posted, The Lord Ashton Series. This will be the first of many series that are simply to large to be placed in the standard list and can stand on their own.

A really interesting project you've got going here, LordEtern - please keep it going if you have the time & energy.

It could be a matter of exact release dates, but (from my own listings) there's a few not on your 2003 list which probably got high ratings:

    Greyfeather Gems, pt 1
    Forgotton Forest, pt 1
    The Abominable Dr Dragon
    Lord Fishkill's Curse.

I'd be very surprised if these didn't get rated highly (especially Greyfeather Gems).

    2004

2004 up! and boy was it exhausting.

From Here on in things get interesting as I pretty much run out of scores from thief missions and the "Keep of Meta land Gold" I am now relying on the player scores from the circle and using a new cruder trick. Next to every payer score is a number, this number represent the number of hits the FM received here on the forums. The idea being that the more people who flock to something the more popular it is and the better it must be. Mind you its not the best method and I feel not as accurate. But the numbers seem to be correlating pretty well and I am at least somewhat satisfied with the results.

It takes much longer to compare than before and it is quite an exhausting procedure.

    Greyfeather Gems, pt 1 (8of73)
    Forgotton Forest, pt 1 (7of57)
    The Abominable Dr Dragon (6of52)
    Lord Fishkill's Curse. (7of62)

These were the only scores I could find from the Circle.

Out of those Greyfeather was considered and would have probably made it if not for some factors on my own determination.
First "A Thief Nonetheless" had another score of 7.0 from the Keep and was part of the FM competition of 2003.
and Gathering at the Bar was in sort of a prequel to Cosas. and I like to keep missions of the same series together if they came out in the same year. regardless of score.

But don't fret I close look at the Greyfeather series shows a promising score for the second one that gets released in 2005. and if it does get put in the list at that time I also put the first one in to keep the series together.

Finally do realize the system is not perfect mostly due to lack of scores to use in later years, and I each year only used the top 15 missions/series) Unless the series is too large like the Ashton or Night Falcon then they get to stand alone.

If someone could send you an almost complett score-database from GarrettLoader, then this might be worth looking into as well.
Just a simple mdb-file (GarrettLoader.mdb), but you would need some program to open that database-file.

that would be nice. Did some looking for it now but alas I guess the owners webpage is down or something.
I did manage to install Garretloader but so far it seems to be a confusing mess.

Try: GL Community Scores via the Wayback Machine

Richard (Potterr) Potter, GL author, disappeared sometime in 2010 and took down his website. On it was his storage for FM scores. Fortunately the Wayback Machine captured and saved some of his site as of 11 Oct 2010. That's where the url above will take you. Just join Peabody and Sherman, and enter the Wayback Machine.

Thank you that is very useful.

And I would like to say that I am happy as all get out the my system for 2004 worked. I doubled checked all the missions with the Garretloader scores and did manage to get all the ones that were scored 8 or higher. and most of the 7 and 6's as well.

You might also consider using some part of the method I was using to arrive at my "Must play" category in my sticky. I was looking for missions that met 2 or more of the following criteria:

High rating on Cheap Thief Missions
    High rating on The circle
    High rating via Garretloader
and this last has become less intuitive with how ttlg is laid out now, but if you go to the bottom of the Thief fan mission forum you can show threads from the beginning sorted by number of replies or views. I generally found that threads with massive numbers of views and replies were FMs that a LOT of people have played.

other than garretloader, "which I never heard of until now" that pretty much is the method I use. I may redo 2004 with garret loader scores more but I have spent a lot of time on the list so far and don't think I will for earlier years. Besides I already checked numbers pretty well and found that the FM's in my list closely (though not exactly) correlate to what is on GarretLoader.
