Great info, thanks again.![]()
Hey there .o/
Since a new version of NewDark has been released again recently, I tought I'd join the party and update my patch too (link updated in the first post).
More seriously, since newer versions of NewDark are being released from time to time (even though it's not that often) and various people are making variants of them (for example by changing the icon and/or the version numbering), I had been thinking for a while that I probably should change the way GoldToDark handles "unknown" versions of thief.exe, instead of trying to recognize each and every one of them, which would mean me having to update my patch everytime a new thief.exe variant pops up.
So, NewDark 1.22 being released was pretty much all the motivation I needed to get this done.
Again, you don't need this new version if you already applied a previous one, but you may want it just in case you have to reinstall your game at a later time, as this will be able to handle more situations than the older versions could.
Now, enough blabbering, here comes the changelog:
Version 2014-08-02:
- Now assumes that some NewDark variant is installed if it doesn't recognize the Thief.exe file, instead of aborting
- now also saves cam.cfg and ddfix.ini (if it exists), to avoid a possible error with the resolution if the user later restores his previous install from the backup
- ignores dark.cfg as the differences between existing versions don't seem to have significant impact on the game
- moves the .dml patches to backup folder if it finds any, just to be on the safe side
I thought they might not apply correctly since the missions files are reverted to those from TDP instead of Thief Gold, and even if they do work with both (which I must admit I do not know), moving them would ensure that the player gets their maps closer to the original versions.
Either way, I guess people who want the more polished experience can still apply TFix afterwards.
I'd recommend leaving the dmls alone, removing them will definitely cause more problems than leaving them alone (especially if you are removing ALL of them - that would be a VERY bad idea). also, make sure to delete miss18.mis, so TFix will detect the GoldToDark patched install as T1 nonGold, and patch up accordingly.
Alright, I'll publish a new version today then, modified in accordance with your recommendations.
Edit : done.
Version 2014-08-02B:
- as recommended by voodoo47, we don't move the .dml patches anymore, however we do move miss18.mis to the backup folder, so that TFix can properly identify the patched game as not being Gold

Just wanted to post thank you for this!
I've been itching to experience Thief TDP in its original form!![]()
did a quick test, and the latest TFix seems to be handling a GoldToDark patched Thief install properly, creating a fully working NewDarked install of TDP. do note that after applying TFix, it won't be possible to uninstall GoldToDark (and/or TFix), so you will have to start from a fresh install should you decide you don't want to use GoldToDark (and/or TFix) anymore.
I think the HD mod doesn´t work with Thief: the dark Project only with the Gold edtition.
So I tried to go from gold to dark with this patch http://constancejill.free.fr/GamePat...0Read%20me.txt
Unfotuantely I had problems as seen by this image

and

I assume the problem is with the location of the files. Although my copied thief game is now located in D:\TDP.
The original install.cfg looked like this

Any idea how to fix this? Should I start over?
Problem currently being solved at the Steam forums, if anyone's having the same issue : http://steamcommunity.com/app/211600...6348042678170/
I thought I'd try this out, but have had trouble copying the GoldtoDark files into my Thief Gold directory.
I have a CD Thief Gold install with TFix Lite applied. I made a copy following the instructions found in the readme of GoldtoDark. Then, I copy everything in 'GoldToDark - version 2014-08-02B' and begin to paste it into the Thief Gold copy folder I have made. (I will have renamed this folder 'Thief TDP' by this point.)
First, I get a message telling me that the 'intrface' folder cannot be copied because there is a file with the same name (I assume it means the 'intrface.crf' file). It only gives me the options to 'Try Again', 'Skip', or 'Cancel' ('Try Again', of course, doesn't work). It does the same for 'Movies' and 'RES'.
Then, when I've gone ahead and skipped those items, thinking "I'll try copying them individually again later", it never pastes the rest of the files. It just stays on the window indicating that it's copying files, stuck, and I have to click cancel eventually.
I know this is all Windows-based stuff, and not a problem with Constance's files. I post this here just to see if there's something I've done wrong with the copy of my Thief Gold install. Why would Windows ever act like this when copying files? I'm using Windows 7 x64, by the way.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Edit: It also behaved the same when I did the same process with a clean Thief Gold install copied from the discs (no TFix applied).
sounds like permissions/read only files. also, whatever you do, apply TFix last.
Hm...I tried doing it after setting all the files in the destination folder (Thief TDP) not to be read only. It still did the same thing. I might try again with a clean, proper install (I already tried with a clean, 'just copied the THIEF folder contents from the discs' install, and it did the same thing with that too).
Until now I haven't cared about playing the original TDP, having only played and replayed the Gold version for 16 years now. I always assumed the only changes were the extra levels. Then yesterday I read somewhere in a thread here (following links from Cigam's thread) that TDP had craymen in the Lost City. Seriously? I felt so disenchanted with life when I learned that I could have been playing with craymen in the Lost City instead of mages. (I love the craymen and bugbeasts from TDP.) Now I'm obsessed with playing the original TDP, not just because I need to experience the Lost City with Craymen, but I also want to know what other little changes there are I haven't been aware of...
Which is why I hope I can get this to work!
Edit: I tried this on another PC, with Windows 10, and it did the same thing. Then I tried copying the GoldToDark files into an empty folder...and the same message popped up (?).
So then I went and ordered a used copy of Thief: TDP from Amazon. I will get my craymen in the Lost City, darn it!

Hello there :]
Looks like you're trying to copy the files directly from the .zip, which you opened using Windows Explorer's built-in zip support.
Unfortunately, Windows' Explorer still sucks at handling .zip files. Seems like it doesn't even handle correctly unzipping a .zip that has folders in it.
You should use any other third-party utility (I'd recommend 7-zip, but there are plenty out there) instead.

Ah, I should've known - in the past I have used those, but just haven't gotten around to downloading them on my recent PC. I didn't know that about Windows Explorer not being fully capable at unzipping, though.
My copy of TDP arrived today, anyway...I had planned on getting it sometime as a long overdue addition for my collection, so it's no loss. Time for some craymen in the Lost City.![]()
...I'll miss the extra levels, though, as I'm so used to them, and like them (yes, even the Thieves' Guild)...those extra levels and craymen in the Lost City would be my ideal TDP experience.
twhalen2600, remember you can always keep a Gold install then switch to it at the appropriate moments while playing TDP. This is what I am doing while playing TDP.
I just add
starting_mission 8
Cash_Bonus 2005
to the bottom of the Dark.cfg in the TG install (where in this example I want to start Mage Towers with the 2005 I earned in THC), start a new game in TG and there is continuity.
You may have already known this "cheat" of course but thought I'd mention it.
Fantastic stuff, Constance, thank you for this.
Does it work with NecroAge?
Hmm I guess a better question would be, "does NecroAge work with TDP?"
GoldToDark is meant to be applied on a "clean" version of Thief Gold, which it "reverts back" into TDP. Then it's up to you which mods you apply to your TDP copy.
Thanks for putting this patch together. I installed it to compare The Lost City TDP version to the Gold one. I knew I remembered Craymen in this level when I played it 20 years ago!
Sorry if this has been gone over many times, but will the following install order work:
TG GoG
TFix
G2D mod
Will this give me ALL the original Dark missions, and will Tfix still provide fixes for them?
Also will this mod affect your settings in files like cam_ext? Thanks.
