    Dear Dia,

Thanks so much for getting in touch and for letting me know about all the posts at TTLG and the petition. I've been aware of some of this but, nevertheless, I am truly overwhelmed and astonished by the appreciation so many people have shown. I have been meaning to write something on the forum to thank all those who have taken the time to post and I hope to get to that later today. The fact that people all over the world have responded so positively to the work I was fortunate enough to be able to do means the world to me. Creating Garrett's voice (and Benny and Karras) and working closely with the incredibly talented and encouraging audio team at Looking Glass, particularly those geniuses Eric Brosius and Kemal Amarasingham, was one of the highlights of my life and I'm extremely grateful to them for the opportunity. I'm also more grateful than I can ever express that so many fans responded so enthusiastically over the years and continue to do so even now. I hope you do get a chance to visit WHAT this Summer and that you get to see one of the productions. I think you'll like what you see.

If I could ask a favor of a stranger, I would really appreciate it if you would not share this email address. Maybe it's the lingering Garrett in me, but I've always preferred to keep a low profile.

Thanks a million, Dia, and all best wishes to you.

My day is complete. Just wish I could sign that petition again. And again.

    Mr. Russell,

I can't adequately express how much I've appreciated your characterization of Garrett throughout the Thief series. I discovered the games at a very low point in my life (I had just been diagnosed with a fatal heart disease). I escaped into the Thief universe for some time and though it may sound silly, feeling like I could "become" Garrett for even a short period of time helped me to cope with my real life struggles. That would have never happened if you had not done such a great job at making me believe I was truly a professional Thief - able to rise above the circumstances and master my own destiny. I return to the games today for a bit of that escapism and the voice of Garrett warms my heart like an old friend. I'm not a fanatical "gamer" per se, but Thief and Garrett have become an important part of my own story, and I've been excited to introduce the master thief to my children and friends throughout the years. It wouldn't have meant as much without your characterization, and for all this I will be eternally grateful. Your work has helped me in such a tangible way, and I just wanted to let you know and say thank you. I hope events change course and you will be able to continue voicing this character who looms so large in the imagination and wonder of so many fans.

Well, the games sat on my shelf for months as I was too depressed to even install them. At this point I was up all night and sleeping all day, just a mess. One night, I fired up Thief and for the first time in years I was transported out of my personal hell into a world where I could lose myself for the night. I would spend hours exploring levels each night. In a strange way it pulled me out of my descent and Mr. Russell's characterization of Garrett sure played a huge role in that.

The series means a lot to me and I think it touched a lot of fans in the same way...a way I don't think the developers realize with their casual elimination and generalizing of Thief's style and flavor. They get it on a basic level, that the game is about stealth and stealing but they miss the far more nuanced details. When I look at T4, I see a game that is developed by a truly talented group but they're locked into the visual flog fest of modern gaming. If they were allowed to and perhaps even if they had been teamed up with some of the guiding members of Thief, they could have made a truly astounding Thief game.

Besides, it beat waking up in tears again, because I'd had that dream where there is a cure for MS, but I can't have it for one of a myriad of dumb reasons. Just hearing Stephen Russell voicing Garrett is a calming influence for me. Having the ability to "become" Garrett due to the degree of immersion possible in the Thief games helped me retain my sanity as my health got progressively worse. It provided a place where I could walk, run, climb, steal & pretend I was OK. Then I took a turn for the worse & could not play Thief at all due to hand control issues. Let me say that I missed Garrett the way I'd miss a friend who died even though it was really a part of ME that was gone. I am still struggling to retrain myself, but hearing the voice of Garrett makes me feel like I can do it. Maybe this seems silly to some, but, when your mind is fractured, you grab for anything that can help. I guess Garrett has been my mental super glue.

I was laughing, scared, feeling sympathy and empathy, and not wanting that world and characters to come to an end, and so, of course, I went seeking the original title, and found an online forum where I've met (online, anyway) some really great individuals who also love the Thief games and your work. Heh, many of us purchased multiple copies of the games back then, hoping for more Thief titles, and hoping some of the proceeds would get to you and the fine folks at Looking Glass, even if we were incorrect in our assumption. We haven't known a better way to thank you for the embarrassment of rich endless entertainment from your work on these games, but we always smile to hear your characterizations. They just resonate and never get old. You played a huge part, pun intended, in making the Thief video game series timeless, which is a rarity in an industry where the tech grows obsolete so fast. Thank you, Sir. We hope to hear more from you in a new Thief game someday.

I was shocked and sadden by the news that you will not be giving the voice to the new Garrett, but I really hope to hear more of you, if not in Thief then somewhere else. I've been playing games for almost 30 years but I have never seen another character so strongly linked to his voice actor, an actor able to infuse life into a shapeless form and convince countless people that that invisible video game avatar was almost a living person, with complex personality and refined taste.

To make a down-payment against what Obama called the empathy deficit. It's hardly trivial stuff. So truth be to told I was looking forward to you reprising the role of Garrett maybe a little older and more sage than before and I was sorely disappointed that we'll get to miss out, not just on your voice acting (which has always been immensely enjoyable by the way) but also the opportunity for people to play someone other than generic action hero age ~ an older, sager kind of someone.

That probably came out wrong. Not that you're old of course :/

Oh well. Here's hoping film, theatre and voice work for all manner of other things keeps you busy at least until the next Thief. And here's hoping that in the mean time video games have learned that all sorts of characters, not just generic gritty action heroes, make for fascinating protagonists.

That probably came out wrong. Not that I doubt you can do a fine generic gritty action hero :/

Thanks for the adventures - it won't be the same without you, and all the best for the future.

You are one incredibly talented voice actor, and I must say that the voice of Garrett is perhaps one of my favorite voices of any character ever, matching his personality perfectly.

Thank you for all the adventures we've had in the world of Thief, and thank you for taking the time to respond to us. You are awesome.

I hope we'll get a chance to hear you in a Thief game again. If nothing else, perhaps we could all arrange something and make a project of our own, and ask you to give life to one of our favorite characters once again.

Those intercom messages in Soulforge Cathedral, as it's clear the man is going completely, slowly, unavoidably insane... absolutely genius. That I've often found myself, in the midst of countless enemies, with 1,000 things I need to do and even more things to worry about within the context of the game... nevertheless standing transfixed, hanging on Karras' every word...? It's a testament to your performance on every level. Enhanced further by how you simply disappeared into the role! I actually shook my head in disbelief when I was informed that the voice of Garrett and Karras were one and the same.

Your incredible voicework has enriched the entire series, no small feat for a game that's so auditorily oriented. By association, it's enriched the lives of the individuals that experienced it. It certainly has with mine, having inspired numerous artistic and creative endeavors.

I sincerely hope we can make them change their decision but no matter what they choose to do I hope we will continue to be blessed with your wonderful performances for many years to come, in future Thief games as well as other works.

You definitely fooled me. I am still deeply saddened that a different voice actor is currently planned for the new Thief. Of all things to be changed for the new game, I definitely wasn't expecting this -- especially with Garrett still being the main character. So, I'm a bit shocked, to say the least. If you won't be coming back as Garrett (and I'm keeping that as a big *if* for now, as I'm holding on to all hope that you will be back), then I hope EM gives you an opportunity to play other characters in the new Thief; and that you will have the time to do so, and that you will still want to. Thanks again for all you've done for the Thief franchise. Time for me to load up Thief II here and enjoy your wonderful voicework again, just as I've done the past 10+ years. Dear Mr. Russell,

I'd like to wholeheartedly thank you for your captivating voice acting in the Thief series. While I'm pretty sure it would have been an acclaimed game series even without your vocal presence, part of what made its atmosphere so immersive and accessible was your voicework - and not only for Garrett, but also for a large number of very disparate primary and secondary characters. I really appreciate the amount of effort you spent in bringing them to life, giving each a highly distinctive voice and personality. Without your vocal talent, Thief might have been a lot more blander.

I wish you all the best in both your personal life and in your career - whether you'll be acting on stage, in television, or lending your voice to another quality game. Good luck ! ;-)

And when it comes to the Thief series: they are yours by now, actually they became yours in the very first game and I thank God that you were in Deadly Shadows since a lot of people thought it to be a debacle - I think you were playing a big part in saving the game, and it is the same case with Thief 4 now. I do hope that they bring you back, it isn't the same game I fell in love with without you.

Needless to say, I became a fan of yours ever since, and so I enjoy watching whatever movies you are featured in and play whatever games you are part of.

I think this sums it up nicely, I'll avoid writing the book I'd like to write to you, but that is the gist of what I have to say, but mainly: I really do pray, hope and wish that they bring you back for Thief 4, if not, then maybe it was best because if the game leaps off the cliff of re-invention and falls to its death then I'd rather that you're not with it. But even then, you'd be a strong hope for it.

I wish you all the best in the future, and hope to hear you in many more games and see you in many more movies!

Ok, I'll give you this one Vae. Signed. Forced third person is a way bigger issue IMHO, but it would be nice to have Garrett sound like himself on the probably ten occasions he is going to speak.

Signed. No-one can do Garrett better than Russell.

    That man is Garrett.

I signed it for the sake of it. But to be honest I don't care as it is a reboot.

I can't vote in this poll, and I find that kind of insulting, honestly.

Huh. Not enough posts in your membership, or the usual lack of options I used to poke at you about?

There's an article on RPS about Russell not being used, which mentions the petition:

    This:

"Uh. They’re making a sequel to a series which began in 1998, after having already made a sequel to Deus Ex. Their current employment exists purely because of nostalgia. Poor reasoning, I call it. The mo-cap justification, perhaps less so – but we’ll just have to see whether or not Nu-Garrett really is any more convincing because of it."

And no; the new voice of Garrett sounds wooden - like the actor is just reading from the script. Epic fail, afaic.

If EM was steadfast in not using Stephen Russell, they should've realized that our Sly could've done a much better job (than this new actor) and I'm sure he could've rearranged his schedule if EM had only asked.

If this were a true 'reboot' he wouldn't have the mechanical eye. Apparently Garrett has only been away for awhile and has returned to the City. So really it's the same continuity, things around the city have simply changed in his absence. There is no reason Garrett can't be played by Mr. Russell. It's all nonsense.

Yea agreed. The fact that Garrett's voice is an important part of his personality and that it is going to be a reboot shows that it needs to be done right from the base up then to ask another voice actor to fill in the role.

As much as I love Russell and the unique magic he brought... it is clear EM did not choose to go with him, otherwise they would have done so right from the early stages. You guys might be able to persuade EM to change their minds about the new actor... but they are happy with their choice.

Because of this... I've voted "It doesn't matter. "
That's because I personally look for other things that make a good game. Atmosphere, immersion, narrative, exploration etc etc.
I've enjoyed all the fan missions... some were even better than those in the official games.... and none of them were voiced by Russell. I'm glad I never refused to play them because of the voice actors. What would I have missed?

I've been trying to think about my skepticism about Thief 4 and I think it boils down to being afraid of the game being a generic AAA console game.

I actually think that I would be OK with no Stephen Russell, no hammerites nor pagans etc etc if I was confident that the game would be fore mature PC gamers. The fact that I'm not so sure about this makes me cringe about every change I hear about.

EDIT: Let's not forget they dropped Russell to be able to handle athletic motion capture and voice acting which probably means we will have hard scripted (third person) in-engine cinematics and quick time events that are not optional...

EM are releasing more info on the voice actor and the game very soon.
I'm just going to chill out about it now and wait for further news and sound clips.

One thing I'm just about definite won't happen will be the inclusion of quick time events. No one likes them, and only one or two companies use them on a regular basis.

Today's adventure in missing the point.
We would have loved to have used SR, but couldn't because we work for free and he was under contractual obligations and couldn't voice act for us. (And probably didn't have the time to work for free.)

FM authors work with what they have. It's not like we had a choice and could have used Stephen in any FMs. The fact that EM could have used him and didn't is what really stings here. I'd have understood if he was unavailable.

We all look at those things, but Fan Missions aren't exactly a fair comparison since we as fans simply can't hire Stephen Russell to voice our FM's whenever we need him. Thief 4 is an official Eidos product, so they're held to a higher level

Yeah, but we, the fans who will (potentially) pay for the game, are not. Who cares is EM is happy, why does that even matter? Are we supposed to be glad for them?

First, the poll says nothing about "refusing to play" the new game. It simply states whether you want SR to play Garrett or not. So you're saying you're really indifferent to that? If it was 100% up to you, you wouldn't choose SR over whoever this new guy is?

Second - FM makers don't have the option of using SR, unless they want to recycle lines from the original games. EM made a conscious decision not to use SR - big difference. I think most FM authors given an actual choice would have gone with SR, dontcha think?

Third - If you're just going to come over here as EM's lapdog and shameless promoter of anything and everything they do, you're going to constantly and continually take a virtual beating, and it's just going to keep getting worse. So why bother? You're transparent as hell, and not fooling anyone.

Nothing against you personally, I'm sure you're a nice person. But no one is going to take anything you say seriously around here.

I'm hesitant about them giving out any info about the man now. He doesn't deserve it, but I have no doubt he will get alot of really nasty mail due to this.

I could never justify sending nasty mail to anyone. People who do this are not someone I would associate with or stand by. EVER.

To all, I'm not trying to compare anything ... I'm saying it like it is, for me. At the end of the day, its the actual GAME that is more important, not the voice.
To have the GAME AND THE VOICE would be utterly fantastic... but if it is only to be the game, then so be it.

LOL... can't keep up with the replies.
Umm, who said we have to be happy for EM? Don't know why that was even brought up.

I come here as a regular member and have done so since 2005 with no issues, warnings or bans. I am nobody's lapdog; I am my own person. I don't promote anything.
If I am to take a virtual beating... then that is up to whomever wants to beat me. But the reasoning behind it would be immature and unfair.
Yes, I am a nice person.
I don't care if people take me seriously or not. My opinions are as valued or as worthless as yours, his or hers.

Nor would I, it's not his fault, but the internet has thrown people under a bus for far less than that - and thief has some really passionate fan base. If they give out his name or anything that can be used to discern contact info I have 0 doubt in my mind that he will receive all sorts of unfriendly correspondence. I can't help but be concerned when he's probably a voice actor who's just getting off the ground - it would suck to have people kicking you in the teeth so early on just for taking a job.
