Interesting... I always assumed the game was more or less exclusively inspired by the events Chernobyl in 1986.
I wonder where one can watch it.

I find it more surprising that you had never heard of the Tarkovsky movie...
The game was inspired by both the movie and the book the movie was based upon - Roadside Picnic, by the Strugatsky brothers.
Probably the explanation is that I never read the manuals, nor do I visit game-forums all that much.
(Thief & SystemShock being the only exception here)
