New gameplay movie! Be a Garrett, Master Thief

I couldn't resist and watched it. No spoilers. And it looks great.

I laughed at the bit where the narrator was talking about silent, non-lethal takedowns, all the while Garrett is pounding the crap out of the Guard's head in 3rd person.

Dunno. As a modern game it looks fine. It's action packed and cinematic...all the stuff that's popular these days with developers and players it seems, but it does very little for me as a Thief title. Trailers are tailored to look exciting, but from what we know of the design philosophy behind the game...it's sadly not for me.

Well there are glyphs and a decidedly Mechanist looking book in this.

It looks alright actually. Shame about the neutered gameplay.

I really want to like this game. And I'm pretty sure it would be better than Deadly Shadows

I dunno. I want to like this too, but I liked DS too. At least in that one, one tried and could be stealthy. In this new one, it seems you're always running through crowded, lit-up rooms like a dumbass. The real Garrett wouldn't be so stupid.

This is true, they got rid of the crouch-button and made autorun always be enabled so you have to run everywhere. If you try to press the crouch button it'll only make Garrett wave his arms around and yell "Look at me! I'm a big idiot!". So disappointed in EM.

It doesn't seem like that IMO. It's just a trailer. Shadows are very nice and Garrett is swiftly stepping from one cover to another. It IS stealth game, no doubts about it.

PS. I don't like DS very much.

I like the detail but some colour would be nice.

From your lips to Gods' ears! I've really missed good stealth games.

It's just that in the original Thief games there was a kind of ambiance to the world, the pagans, the Hammerites, and so on. Every time I played, I felt like coming home. This new one seems to be about social and political upheaval. I could read about that in history books. I guess I miss being wowed.... Zombies, though. From the flash, seemed scary enough, swarmed by a horde. *shudders*

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Looks like it'll be The Dark Mod vs. Thief then. And unfortunately it looks like TDM with all the Thief-y stuff done well is winning....

TDM is one of the major reasons why I'm not at all opposed to EM experimenting with the formula and doing their own thing. It doesn't have to be exactly like Thief 1 & 2, or even Thief 3, so long as it's great in its own way. And if it ends up sucking, then hey, we've all got TDM to fall back on.

Two different approaches, same DNA. I'm waiting for the TDM campaign, btw

Maybe I'm a bit confused, but I couldnt see that 'shroud' effect throughout this trailer... maybe I missed it...? I won't get another chance to look until later, perhaps someone can confirm if its there?

I think it's interesting that through the entire six minute trailer, we don't hear a second of Romano Orzari's voice.

I was amused by that. The loquacious master thief has gone mute.

I took a few screencaps of the user interface, in case anyone wanted a closer look
we see the arrow selection wheel for
    • choke
    • water
    • blast?
    • fire
    • regular?
    • sawtooth
    • ?
    • rope
    • ?

with a listing on the shop screen for "blunt"

    Upgrades for:
    bow accuracy & damage
    quiver capacity
    armor
    blackjack damage
    lockpick quality (inversely affecting difficulty?
various charms & trinkets with specific boosts/key effects

    Mission Complete screen:
    analysis of player style
challenges completed (remain undetected, lift all loot items)
various statistics, including "collectibles found" (which, combined with the Garrett's trophy room and the promise of new tools unlocking inaccessible areas, leads me to seeing some Metroidvania exploration possibilities)

Somewhat strange, early screenshots showed the round selector wheel for weapons/items, but recent media has shown a more rectangle or boxy shape for that, near the bottom of the screen (see screen below). Now, this new trailer comes out and it's back to round round wheel style, as seen in MrMunkeePant's screenshots. I wonder which one it will be. Or maybe you can choose which style you want in the options.

So, choke arrow is like a gas arrow? And they couldn't call it gas arrow why exactly?

    But hey, bow upgrades, anyone?

Well, it seems the series has finally jumped the shark Alarus Extension.

It could be like the moss arrow in TDS but don't let logic or thinking get in the of your ill conceived hyperbole.

Summer's right. It's equivalent to a gas arrow (see at around 8:03 here): http://youtu.be/wATczNszWu8?t=8m2s

And there's a description page in the new Thief 101 video that says:
"Choke Arrow: On impact, the barrel releases a noxious and suffocating gas that momentarily incapacitates the target, causing mild nausea and difficulty breathing."
I'd prefer it be called gas arrow, too. But they probably didn't want people thinking it was a gasoline arrow that you can make flammable puddles on the ground with; since there are sometimes flammable puddles on the ground.

Man, it's so implausible that Garrett would ever find a better bow, or improve his current one. That would NEVER happen in real life, the first thing you find is always the best, and there is no way to improve anything, ever.
