Black curtains in specific doors and hatches after Installing HDMod

I found several points in the Bank mission where I see a black wall /curtain when I open the door to the big hall or the hatchet from the basement / cellar and the hatchet with the buttons to press to open the safe room so i cannot press any buttons with the HD mod.

and here is the original version without HDMod

Okay here comes the Big Hall with black wall

and here without that black curtain without HDMod

Now coming to the hatchet underground.

    and the Original

Next point is that Light sources there sill emit light when they should be turned off.

    Here the original

This behaviour is as an example for the users that continue a mission that has been started before patching T2 and not restarting the mission.
As I was streaming these level before upgrading I choose to continue at that point and live on with the black curtain and the wrong lighting for this mission.

So remember after installing you MUST restart the current mission to NOT have similar issues

Stuttering + Accidental Upgrade to Extreme Stuttering

Had a mind to switch from NecroAge to the HD Mod because I felt like the noir feel wasn't doing it for me anymore. I've installed it in the past and had no issues with it, besides the annoyance of having to completely scrub my Thief Gold/2 folders and reinstall to ensure I'm completely uninstalled of it.

However, I'm now experiencing a problem that I have literally never seen anyone on the net discuss before and I KNOW it's the HD Mod because I've checked with both vanilla and Necroage--this doesn't happen with those.

Essentially, when moving at certain angles (and it's really wily, I'm not entirely sure of the pattern) there is a kind of "stuttering" that occurs. Now, when I say "stutter", I don't mean an FPS drop or the kinds of stutters I've experienced in Skyrim. I mean a weird sort of tiny "jump" from once space to another, particularly when I'm moving diagonally. I seem to suddenly stutter-jut forwards while moving diagonally.

This was already a problem in and of itself. However, it somehow got worse and I literally have no idea how. I ended up messing with the NewDark options menu in regards to VSync, nVida, post-processing, anti-aliasing, etc. Then went back in the game and now it's CONSTANTLY stuttering no matter where I move, even after I put all the settings back to normal.

I know expecting tech help on a 20 y/o game is a bit of a long shot but I really just wanna make this work and I'd really appreciate the help.

HD Mod demands an absolutely stupid level of system resources (99-frame grass animations, etc.), so it's probably exceeding your available VRAM.

That's the thing. I don't have the animated grass and I've got 4GB of VRAM. Furthermore, I've played with the HD mod before on the exact same computer and it never had this problem. The only possible change that occurred is that my computer got bricked in-between the last time I played with it and now, and to my knowledge, my hardware wasn't affected at all--at least it had no problems in literally every other game I've played since then.

I don't think I'm messing up the installation either. I uninstall Thief G/2 from Steam, delete the file in 'common' to ensure it's ALL gone, then reinstall, install TFix/T2Fix, then the HD mod.

EDIT: When I say "bricked," I mean it wasn't able to start so I did a total reset. I don't mean it literally died.

EDIT2: The "extreme" stuttering abated slightly when I changed "d3d_disp_limit_gpu_frames 1 1" to "d3d_disp_limit_gpu_frames 1" but the minor version is still there.

    HDOMOD 1.0 Breaks T2Fix 1.27

If I install Thief 2 & T2Fix 1.27e - everything works. All mods, etc that require 1.27 work. After running Thief 2 once, when I look in Thief 2.log, I see App Version: Thief 2 Final 1.27.

When I install HDMOD 1.0, None of the mods that require 1.27 will work anymore. When run Thief 2 again, & I look in Thief 2.log I see App Version: Thief 2 Final 1.26. HDMOD also replaces the cam_mod.ini file that was created by T2Fix.

Deleting the HDMOD folder and/or the setting_files folder will not correct this issue. So it seems once installed, the change is permanent? I really like this mod and would like to continue using it.

    Update (fixed):

I tested three ways (and they all "work" as far as I can tell) after some reading and input from Jax64:

    1) Install T2Fix 1.27 (backup the Thief 2.exe), install HDMOD. Run the game and see that the mods needing 1.27 are broken. Delete Thief 2.exe. Use the Thief 2.exe from 1.27. Run the game and see that the mods requiring 1.27 now work. Also HDMOD seems to be working.

    2) Install T2Fix 1.27, install HDMOD. reinstall T2Fix 1.27. Run the game and see that all the mods needing 1.27 now work. Also HDMOD seems to be working.

    3) My bush hack fix was to do 1) then copy HDMOD & setting_files folder into 1) instead of running the HDMOD installer. It seemed to work fine & all the mods needing 1.27 worked. But I am not sure if there was something somewhere else that HDMOD installed that could have been missed. I am including this just because I tried it.

This seems to be a big issue that I'm surprised hasn't gotten more attention.

This would be the simplest fix, but when installing the HD Texture Mod it requires you to patch Thief2.exe to 'Enable LAA and higher object counts.' Has T2Fix enabled the LAA fix in the latest patches? If not, wouldn't you need to run the patch on the 1.27 exe to be compatible with the HD Texture Mod? "If you have unchecked it (unfortunately) you can do it simply manuelly by double clicking the 'LAA.cmd' file which you will find in the HDMOD folder after installation."

    Glitchless HDMOD Setup

Hey guys, ok so, I've experimented with the HDMOD and Fan Missions, even if you run a backup copy of Thief2.EXE v1.27 after installing T2Fix 1.27e and the HDMOD, your game will work, BUT, some fan missions will not like it, for example, Mission X won't let you turn the gramophones off, some FM's won't let you dowse candles or some table lamps will be frobable but you won't be able to turn some of them off and some HD Textures will be missing and there will be a black void instead or the greyed-out texture brushes will show, and those are just some of the issues, there are more. But [without] the HDMOD, and [with] T2Fix 1.27e only, all of those work perfectly! So, my conclusion is, HDMOD works best with the OG but not with many Fan Missions. So here's what I did to have the best of both worlds:

FMs: Simply install a fresh copy of Thief 2 The Metal Age, then Install T2Fix 1.27e to play all Fan Missions without a glitch, then back up that entire Thief folder (copy/paste) to a new folder on your storage drive, perhaps call it [All_Thief2_Files_T2Fix] except the (FM's) folder, just leave that file in there, it's unnecessary and besides, it's usually too large anyway.

OG with HDMOD: If you want to play the Original Game with the HDMOD, simply install the HDMOD and when it's done, your Thief.EXE will now be v1.26 so simply copy/paste your saved Thief.EXE v1.27 from the [All_Thief2_Files_T2Fix] folder and replace the v1.26 with the your v1.27 so now, you're ready to play the OG with HDMOD without a glitch. Now make a backup of all those files as well. Perhaps call it [All_Thief2_Files_HDMOD] in your storage drive.

Once you're all setup that way, all you do is delete all files in the C/Games/Thief 2 The Metal Age folder (except the FM's folder of course), and copy/paste whatever you're gonna be playing for a while, if you want to play the OG, copy all files inside your new [All_Thief2_Files_HDMOD] and paste it into the C/Games/Thief 2 The Metal Age folder and if you want to play Fan Missions, remove all files (except the FM's folder) in the C/Games/Thief 2 The Metal Age folder and copy all files from your new [All_Thief2_Files_T2Fix] folder and paste it to C/Games/Thief 2 The Metal Age folder. That process only takes a few minutes and you'll save yourself a lot of headaches.

    I hope that helps

Not even sure I followed all of that, seems way too convoluted. Can't you just install T2 twice (once for FMs and once for HDMOD) into 2 separate folders? All that copy and pasting back and forth seems really unnecessary.

Surely this can't be to save disk space, a T2 install is only about a gig I believe.

Yeah, it can be done easier. Two folders, right next to each other. Thief 2 Original; just use the created shortcuts. Thief 2 Fan Missions; just point AngelLoader to that folder. No need to delete/copy/paste.

lol .. .ok...maybe I was thinking too hard I like that two-folder side-by-side concept too actually

Yeah, I have 8GB of VRAM (RTX 2070) and lots of normal RAM and decent CPU, yet HD Mod seems to make my T2 framerate stutter once every minute or two. Sigh

Hopefully an "HD Mod Lite" (or 'optimized') version can be made someday

What Voodoo means by this is that the Thief Enhancement Pack, unlike HD Mod, doesn't stomp on Thief's map files. All it does is upgrade the graphical assets, so it can be activated/deactivated whenever, and is compatible with most FMs.

    And it looks better.

Oh, wow! Thank you! I didn't know about this. Now I just need to figure out how to uninstall HD Mod
Ideally, uninstall instructions should be easy to find, imo. So far, not finding them in the HD app itself ("NewDark Graphics Settings"), readme.txt, add/remove programs, HDMOD folder, OP of this thread, ModDb site, etc.

Even if it's simply, "Manually delete these folders", it'd be nice to know

That said, the HD Mod was nice, so thank you Gecko and all who created it. Definitely brought some awe-inspiring moments But it's time for me to try Thief Enhancement Pack to see if it runs better on my system

I would just create a completely new T2 install (T2Fix), iirc, hdmod installs a few outdated files you don't want to have lurking around.

and yeah, EP2 does not have nearly enough exposure, and a lot of people have no idea it exists even though it's what they actually want (hires resources true to the vanilla aesthetics).

  17. #392
Yeah, great point, thanks! Done. Just uninstalled and re-installed. The Thief Enhancement Pack 2.0 is quite nice so far

It's maybe not as richly beautiful as the HD Mod was, but I have a great framerate now and I'll enjoy the fact that the higher-resolution textures offer a more 'true-to-original-Thief' experience. And I haven't yet begun to tweak graphic settings, if there are any (like bloom, etc.) that might be in CFG and INI files.

Thanks again for suggesting so I can at least try it out!

The latest version of Ep2 was quite a nice upgrade. The author still has a bunch more stuff to sort through to add. I find it much better than trying to salvage the original textures through AI upscaling. The original textures are so low quality, imo it is best to replace or recreate them with similar higher quality textures like the Ep2 has done. Overall better effect.
