While the halberd class weapons are not quite as OP as in Demon's Souls they are still very effective in Dark Souls 2 IMO.
With the added range you can if you time it right hit many enemies and stagger them before they get a chance to do anything. Also the damage is better than with spears.
I suggest always two-handing halberd style weapons when attacking because the attack animations are faster then and the two handed R2 can be quite useful sometimes too for hitting multiple enemies.
The shield poke maneuver which was added in DS2 is complete rubbish so I never use it.
I did have to switch to the broadsward for the Sir Alonne fight as I'm not good enough to dodge all of his attacks for the entire fight and one handed attacks are much too slow to use safely and switching between one and two-handed mode is too slow as well for that fight.
That's the weapon I used for almost the entire game as well. It's just too good to switch it for anything else.As far as Bloodborne is concerned however I pretty much stuck with the Hunter's Axe right through to the end.
The dodge R1 charge attack I really liked. I actually tried doing it in SOTFS a few times out of habit.
I'm currently helping people defeat Fume Knight as part of the Heirs of the Sun covenant and I've already collected more than 20 sun medals this way in just a couple days (I've collected 25 actually but not all of them are from Fume Knight).
I'm using the Agape Ring to stop my soul memory from going up so I will hopefully stay within summoning range and also because I don't really care that much about souls at this point.
Got the last five sun medals I needed so I'm a bell keeper now (sort of). Been invading and getting invaded in Belfry Sol while increasing my rank in the covenant (somewhere between rank 1 and 2 right now).
A few times when I invaded the Belfry Sol NPC summon was there and that guy soaks up damage like a sponge. I got several good hits in on him one time and it barely put a dent in his health bar so after that I just ignore him and go for the host. Not sure why they added this guy since the area wasn't particularly tough to begin with in my experience...
I don't like using magic much apart from weapon buffs but I definitely need to remember more often that I have dark orb as a backup that I can use against people who constantly run away and drink. Also I find the roll R1 of the scythe can be really useful to close distance and get a quick attack in if they're trying to get away.
Dammit, this weekend I re-downloaded DS2 to make screenshots for architecture and color palette for a small project of mine, and ended up playing it for several hoursMan, there are so many things I haven't seen yet.
I must admit that while the architecture in the Dark Souls series is awesome, I always seemed to be too distracted to look at it properly because of all that insistent gameplay stuff that kept getting in the way.
I think it might be better to look at screenshots and videos for project-styling inspiration. Luckily, I did at least manage to take some screenshots as I played through it.
Yeah, gameplay is intense enough to distract you from taking screenshots, but I needed those from places I've already been to, so that was relatively easy. Third person view makes it kind of hard to look up though, and I need ceilings for good FPP view![]()
Is it true that Shrine of Winter / Frozen Eleum Loyce is more suited towards NG+ or high-level players? I managed to get there, but I'm getting my ass kicked more often than in other locations. Even places like Sanctum City seem to be more forgiving.
Eleum Loyce was a difficult slog even with my NG+ character, so yeah, it's very much built with a high level builds in mind.
It's the last of the three DLCs IIRC, therefore the hardest.
(Oddly, it's also the one I played first.)
The bosses there are especially nasty - particularly the optional one - but the main boss is an awesome spot for some Jolly Cooperation (plus, there's rewards for doing so.)
The whole DLC in general is a good place to put your summoning sign, regardless of your soul memory.
At some point I went back to see if I have some unfinished business in Shaded Woods (I had), and the doors to the Shrine of Winter suddenly opened. I guess I'll leave this stuff for later.
For me the only part of Eleum Loyce that was a bit of a pain was the optional area with all the annoying electricity-casting ice reindeers from Hell. Oh, and no bonfire, which made the trek across the frozen tundra a pain in the ass if you died before/during the boss fight and had to do it all over again...
I think I found being more cautious, by comparison, in Brume Tower, though Shulva was nothing to fully sneeze at. Fun times, regardless. :3
I loved that area all the same, but agree it was pretty tough. I gave up battling the two optional bosses in that area as it was just a lazy copy and paste of pet Avro, or whatever it's name is.
Imho Dark Souls 2's weakest area (or certainly among the weakest) were the bosses. Save a few, most of the bosses were, in my experience, somewhat bland and uninspiring. Adding insult to injury were the copy-paste bosses from DS 1, and even one was a copy-paste from DS 2.
So, it seems like the Shrine of Amana is my only option to move forward, and man, I'm having my ass handed to me after the second bonfire. Lots of enemy casters, and those hammer dudes at the entrance to the next cave make my life miserable. And the only NPC phantom there is the awful crossbow guy![]()
Good magic resistance makes a world of difference in this area.
Also, the first Amana bonfire is one of my favourite places for farming via ascetics - relatively high soul yields, human effigies, twinkling titanite, all in a really easy area.
Taking cheap shots with a bow from a distance helps a little as well![]()
Since I'm done with Witcher 3 (for now anyway) I decided to start a dual wield caestus build just for fun:
Bosses that I've beaten already with it are Pursuer, Last Giant, Dragon Rider and Flexile Sentry.
I might later try out some of the other fist weapons as well but for now I'm sticking to caestus, except maybe when I need to kill one of those crystal lizards as they are really hard to hit with fist weapons.
^Needs more mustache and butterfly wings.By the way, stay away from the bonefist if you want any semblance of challenge. Last time I've beaten the main game in NG+3 with a broken bonefist. The moveset is fun as hell though... and can hit crystal lizards just fine.
I'm slowly finishing up said playthrough currently (mostly playing other games atm), albeit with no weapon restrictions anymore. I also coop from time to time with steam chat people or just randomly. This is my current main char nearing the end of NG+3.
Wow, this was really weird, the third Amana cave was so much easier, and that frog thing, easiest thing in the world. But then, Undead Crypt happened, and now I need a new controller![]()
The Shrina of Amana was probably the most maliciously-designed section of the game, with lots of places that you could very easily fall to an instant-drowning death if you weren't really, really careful and using a torch.
I loved the singing (and what its source ultimately turned out to be), though.
Oh boy...I passed Shrine of Amana without using a torch. I rarely fell into the water, but man, was that shit tense!
The boss there, the Demon of Song, was kind of cool.
So, favorite of the crown expansions? :3
Sanctum City, oh yes. I loved the architecture and the visuals there. It reminded me of the Lost City from Thief, and other similar "ancient" settings.
