    Understood.

Now the kickstart is in midflight, however, there are plenty of substantial topics to drool upon.

    78% funded.

Awesome interview with Redbull Games (?) about the faction system in Underworld.

"There are real tensions between these three factions, which have more or less peacefully co-existed [thus far]. But now there are things afoot making the world go off kilter," says Neurath. "You as the player get thrown into this mix, and you start to get a sense that something is going amiss here and that these three factions are at odds with each other. You get pulled into supporting one of them – but it's your choice, there's no right or wrong.

"The factions have their own politics, there's an ebb and flow as a faction might grow in power, take over certain areas or take certain actions collectively. Think of it like fiefdoms in the medieval world; noble lords with their groups that are pushing factions back and forth. War of the Roses, that kind of thing, [but] in a fantasy context. But these are made up of NPCs, and there are going to be NPCs that are part of these factions, and they're individuals. We did some of this in the original Underworld, and people found it interesting that they could befriend [NPCs] and that would piss off their enemies. Your friends' enemies are your enemies. We don't set it up like, 'you should do this'. We say, 'here is the world, here are the NPCs, they have their [own] motivations'."

Shadowrun Hong Kong just barely pulled in $1.2M, despite having a more steady influx of cash throughout the campaign. Looks like they'll probably be removing the co-op tag from the Steam Greenlight page, barring a miracle.

Liking some of LGS' products doesn't mean I will like all of them, or their new projects. I'm not interested in this project mainly because I'm not interested in RPGs. If something good comes out of it though, so be it!

I'll now leave you all to keep supporting and speculating on the project.

Strange, someone must have a withdrawn a sizable donation - I'm watching the Kickstrarter like a hawk, and I thought earlier today it was over the $475K mark, but now it's back down to $466K.

Yeah, one of the $10,000 slots is now available again. Pretty unfortunate, when that's about an average day's funding right now -- the kicktraq daily graph is currently negative. Hopefully the other top-tier backers are all in it for the long haul.

Yep, there's now one $10K pledge slot available. Those $10K slots had been sold out since the first few days. Here's hoping it's someone who decided to fund outside of Kickstarter, maybe in hopes of opening up a slot for someone else. (Yeah I know -- that's a really optimistic angle on a sudden $10K drop.)

Reading the official forums, I'm afraid this project may disappoint some people.

    If you evaluate:

    1) The original Underworld games
    2) The trajectory of the design philosophy employed by Looking Glass, which ended with the Thief games.
    3) The design paradigm employed by the games most directly influenced by Looking Glass games (Deus Ex, Arx Fatalis, Dark Messiah, BioShock, Dishonored)
    4) The gameplay OtherSide shows, describes and pushes the most in the Kickstarter so far...

You come up with a rich immersive sim with RPG elements. There seems to be a faction of fans over at the official forums that are more interested in an old school hardcore stat-oriented RPG. These aren't the same thing.

I think this may be because of the Ultima name associated with the first games, as well as the RPGs of the era in which the original Underworlds were released. But I'm afraid quite a few enthusiastic people over there might be barking up the wrong tree.

(Note: I'm not suggesting Underworld Ascendant won't be an RPG or won't have character growth and customization through stats. But there is a difference between a hardcore stat-oriented RPG experience and an immersive sim employing RPG elements for greater player choice and expression.)

Update 14. Sad to see that a pledge was dropped. They'll hopefully get another whale was the campaign winds down.

“In Underworld Ascendant, instead of the designers scripting a set solution path for a player, the Improvisation Engine puts the problem solving in the player’s hands.

“Our designers lay out an encounter; setting up the monsters, traps, the physical layout, and the like. Then the world simulation is turned on. A set of fairly complex interactions and dynamics take place of their own accord. The player comes into this dynamic mix, and can permeate this situation in whole range of ways, some of which the designers may have never imagined.”

Less than a $130 before their at 78% again!

This is the first one of these "Kick - Starter" thingies I've participated in. Would've done the same for Star Control 4 and Betrayal at Krondor 2. Anyways, make it good. Btw, strewth!, lost my original account (without the i).

It's pretty tricky to find -- they really should make it easier -- but I found this under Backer Questions:

What forms of payment can I use to make a pledge?

You can use a debit or credit card associated with Visa, MasterCard, or American Express. If using a pre-paid credit card, please make sure that the card has a value of at least $1 more than your pledge amount.
    I hope that helps.

The Thief Stream was really cool. Otherside answered a few questions about Deep Cover and the LGS version of Thief 3.

Stupid of me not to think about looking at the site faq at all so thanks a lot for that. I kind of assumed that each campaign would have its own way of doing it.

Now that Terri and Stephen are on board, they should offer either of them recording a custom voicemail greeting as a backer reward.

    Good idea, ZB...

That would have to be offered at least at the $300+ level (Lore Seeker), in order to make it practical.

Strategically, I think it better offered at the high mid-range level of support ($300-$1000), rather than at the highest echelons.

    That's a great idea, ZylonBane.

Underworld Ascendant just passed the 81% funding mark and was greenlit on Steam earlier today.

About 91k to go with 12 days to do it. With Kickstarter, usually there is an increase of backers as it gets closer to the deadline right?

I wish some popular Youtube people would cover the game in some fashion, or that any high profile devs would tweet about it, or anything. It seems like almost no one cares to spread the word about it.

    9 days to go...

There are a number of high-profile devs (e.g. Chris Roberts, Richard Garriott) who have made some noise about Underworld Ascendant.

I don't know about the Youtube crowd -- I hear they have a big influence nowadays, so I agree it would be nice, if any of them have enough familiarity with the games to appreciate what's (potentially) happening here.

Creeping to the finish, over 90% now with 9 days to go. Hopefully a last minute surge will get it to at least the first stretch goal, but it would need to average about $23K/day to get there.
