Nice tease, but how many years before we see something? Underworld Ascendant still has a long way to go.

Man... 15 years ago I found TTLG while looking for the possibility of a System Shock 3. Thanks for the belated response, guys.

I'm kinda just in disbelief now...

    So commence questions and speculation.

Doug Church led the development of the original System Shock and Ken Levine led the development of System Shock 2. Will OtherSide be able to get either of those two involved? I know Doug Church is in deep with Valve now, but people have left before...

I understand Randy Smith was really disappointed with the sales of Tiger Style's latest game (despite its good reviews)... will that disappointment help him set aside his own projects to join OtherSide? As I recall, he was a huge System Shock fan and joined LookingGlass in hopes of working on a System Shock game.

Will Eric Brosius be involved? (I assume Terri Brosius will be.)

was there any doubt? I was sure it will happen the moment NightDive announced that they acquired ALL of the Shock IP from star insurance - there is no other reason why they would do that.

If only Eidos would release Thief from their clutches and let Otherside do one of those!!!

I’ll settle for Underworld first. But I can’t deny being awfully excited.

To be fair, Ken Levine also led development on Bioshock. I'd rather he not be let anywhere near SS3.

Something tells me that Otherside will go down that route eventually, if they can't get the rights then a spiritual successor at least.

Its the holy trinity Ultima Underworld, System Shock and Thief.

We'll likely see this game before Half-Life 3, which at one point no one would have believed.

A few days ago, some changes Valve made to expose packages for their new refund & deletion system accidentally revealed a package called 'Half Life 3'. You never know.

You know, it always kind of bummed me out that the guy who created The Haunted Cathedral/Return to the Cathedral was now making a bunch of crappy mobile games.

This is easily the single most awesome game-related news i've received in ten years.

    RE: Thief

Eidos will never let that go.

But hey stealth, we know a thing or two about that, so who knows.

    Oh, hey Chris.

It's Chris Siegel, OtherSide's senior producer.

I'm by no means an expert when it comes to IPs and such, but I always wondered: Is there a possibility of an IP holder to "share" said IP with another studio, if only to make one project out of it? Or would there be the danger of too much "unwanted involvement" of Eidos regarding development?

Yes, you can license it -- give permission to use it for a project or some period of time, depending on the agreement.

See also: Fallout: New Vegas, where the new IP holder (Bethesda) gave a licence to some of the original developers (at Obsidian) to make a sequel.

Bethesda didn't give them the license, they hired them as independent contractors.

I think the two closest things we've had to a new System Shock were the original Dead Space and Alien Isolation. I hope they don't hire Ken Levine, BioShock was such a disappointment.

Don't Square Enix have a program specifically for that purpose? I think it's mostly used to license their old shitty IPs that have close to no value. I guess the best we can hope for is for them to run the franchise into the ground, so the IP loses its value and joins the program.

I think EM botched Thief4 so badly that it hurt their overall credibility, partially undoing the clout they attained from DXHR and in a way it could potentially affect their other products/games in the future. I bet they'd jump at the chance to have someone else take a crack at Thief, and divert all the negative publicity and attention away from them.

mmm Dead Space 1 was pretty grand, and quite disturbing. I read a rumor a while ago that it may have even started as a System Shock 3 at one point.
BioShock 1 was okay and definitely the strength of its series, but I prefer the world of System Shock & Deus Ex over exaggerated comic relief and strange humor. (Big daddies, little sisters? come on...)
Alien Isolation: Fantastic, and I want more!

I wouldn't call it a disappointment. Sure, it wasn't as great as System Shock 2, but it was still better than 95% of other shooters on the market in that timeframe.

But if it's any consolation: https://www.facebook.com/ken.levine....56?pnref=story

The problem is he billed it as a spiritual successor to System Shock. If he'd never have said that I would have been much happier. When I played through it a second time knowing what it was, I enjoyed it a lot more. They just dumbed it down too much to compare it to System Shock in my opinion.
