Thanks to one of the biggest groups yet for an Arma 3 session: Henke, Malf, Piglick, Sulphur, and Lord Penney, a special guest from the glory days of yore. Thanks to everyone!

We actually successfully completed the first mission, clearing a building site of bad guys, though we did suffer some heavy losses. Shooting enemies through wooden slats never gets old, though.

Mission 2: Well, let's put it like this: if we hadn't blown up our own truck, we would've succeeded, not least after we'd completed all the other objectives. I'm still not entirely clear on why we blew up our truck, but it may have had something to do with our glorious leader Henke dropping out ten minutes before the mission ended.

Mission 3, with three of us left: Escape Altis. We got out of lock-up well enough, but the first building we headed to came equiped with an armoured, armed vehicle that decided it'd have us for dinner. Which it did. No survivors. But it was fun.

I'll again post something next time an Arma 3 session comes up. My impression is that we're slowly getting the hang of this! (Or perhaps it's just that I turned down enemy AI a notch or two.)

It was good fun, sorry I dropped out so early. I must say that the ping issue was quite decent really, there was only a couple of instances of laggyness.

Yeah, there are moments of oddness when you show up somewhere other than where you are, but on the whole Arma does compensate very well for bad ping. As always, great fun playing with you!

At least it wasn't me, I was searching for missiles to contribute to the proceedings at the time (thanks for pointing out that Virtual Arsenal option, chaps). I heard a boom and then it was mission over -- like in real life, I imagine.

It wasn't me either, as I'd scouted ahead to the final waypoint. I don't think it's entirely the fault of anyone, though; the waypoint was called TRUCK, which doesn't immediately suggest that you have to take the truck you've got there.

Still, fun session, and I definitely get the impression we're slowly getting the hang of the game and its systems. Also, I set the enemy AI up to 100% so they act in smart and interesting ways while turning down their accuracy, so they're not perfect aimbots. While it may still need some tweaking, I thought that the game felt fairer on the whole.

Should we tentatively plan in another Arma session in three weeks' time?

Just to let you guys know, I won't be around for this weekend's session; I've got the folks staying with me.

Fun times were had in Virtual Reality with henke; not sure I'd call it coop, since we mostly played competitive games in Rec Room (Capture the Flag, some frisbee golf thing, dodge ball and a few others), but while the games are all pretty simple and Wii Sports-like, sharing virtual space with someone else, seeing them move and hearing them talk, is pretty cool.

Anyway, I wanted to let people know that the next Arma 3 session is tentatively planned in for Saturday, 13 May. More details to follow closer to the date.

As promised, here's a reminder - also for anyone who hasn't joined yet but would be interested in doing so:

    Date: Saturday, 13 May 2017
    Time: 4-6pm UK time
    Game: Arma 3

    Things to note:
    • We're using Teamspeak 3 for voice chat. Bring a headset and install the latest version of TS3. Note: Voice detection should work just fine, no need for configuring Press To Talk (PTT).
    • No mods required, but for quality of life I'd very much recommend Shacktac UI and CBA_A3 (the latter is required for the former to run). Easiest way to add them is using the Steam Workshop. Any client-side mod should be fine, really.
    • I'll be online a bit before 4pm to set up the server and check who's on Steam, and I'll launch a server shortly before the session. I'll post the IP and password on the Steam group (http://steamcommunity.com/groups/ArmaTTLG) under Events.

    Hoping to see you there!

Thanks to henke, Jeshibu, Malf and PigLick for an enjoyable hour of getting killed horribly, followed by getting our own back. We didn't finish the second mission (too long, and the respawn point was ~2km away from where the battle was happening), but we got the commander with a well placed missile. There was also tragedy as Jeshibu fell to a bullet that may or may not have been fired by me... but he recovered and caught up with us relatively quickly and I promised not to shoot him again.

Next Arma session will be in 2-3 weeks. As always, I'll post once we know more.

Especially once we'd solved our communications problems. It added to the sheer absurdity of war when for the first 15 minutes we could hear you going, "Can you hear me, guys?", but you couldn't hear us. Anyway, once that problem was solved, I was as amazed as always that the game actually works reasonably well with people who have pings just below 500.

And we're returning to Altis for some more hot and cold warfare. Join us in the trenches next week!

    Date: Saturday, 27 May 2017
    Time: 4-6pm UK time
    Game: Arma 3

    Things to note:
    • Please note that we're switching to Mumble of voice chat. Bring a headset and make sure to install the Mumble client. Login details (courtesy of Malf) can be found on the Steam page (see below) under Discussions.
    • No mods required, but for quality of life I'd very much recommend Shacktac UI and CBA_A3 (the latter is required for the former to run). Easiest way to add them is using the Steam Workshop. Any client-side mod should be fine, really.

A thing of beauty, just like the session.

Thanks to henke, Jeshibu, Malf, Piglick and special guest Lord Penney! Two successful mission, and one kinda messy one, though that assault on the respawn point was definitely intense.

Love that video - it captures the cheerfully bumbling atmosphere of our best/worst moments in the mission.

I'll have to check out if we can actually save and reload in those long missions (I know the function is there in theory, but I don't know how well it works in practice), so we can perhaps spread those missions over two sessions. That way we could restart the Sigma Quadrant missions and *not*... how did Piglick put it? ... deny vital resources to the enemy (AKA blow up our own, mission-critical truck).

This is just a heads-up to let people know that the next Arma 3 session will be on Saturday 17 June. I'll post the details once we're closer to the date, and I'll send a round of Steam messages to catch those who aren't on the forums on a regular basis.

Good VR co-opping in Rec Room tonight! First we played a couple rounds of Disc Golf, then we went on a Quest with a guy called Gerard, and after that we fought robots on a spaceship!

    Here's the second bit.

(annoyingly the recordning did not pick up my Rift mic)

Definitely the most strenuous coop session yet; once I started ducking and getting down on my knees to present less of a target, my survival rate went up considerably. Great fun, though I thought that the sic-fi scenario worked better than the fantasy one. Anyway, looking forward to more VR coop as well!

I think as a concept, the fantasy one has great potential for someone to take it and run with it. Being able to swing swords, block with shields and adjust an arrow's distance properly were all great fun. Adding some gesture-driven spells through picking up a spellbook that you can flip through the pages of would be awesome. The action just needs to scale more gently, and it needs to allow for saving. With a graphical change, something like that has the chance to be the ultimate reproduction of a pen and paper dungeon crawl. Add in classic clerics and rogues, drop in traps, secrets and locked doors, oh my.

Agreed. There's a lot they could add while still keeping it simple: savepoints, as you've said, perhaps some very basic leveling up (to go with the nerdy, homespun D&D atmosphere), perhaps even some very basic coop puzzles (having to press several buttons or stand on several pressure plates at the same time). Something between basic D&D and Gauntlet.

I'm not entirely sold on the teleport option in Rec Room; it works okay, but I would like to see an option to move with the sticks. At the very least I'd like to be able to turn smoothly instead of only in 90° turns.

Yeah, same here, really not convinced that teleport is the best method of movement. Okay, they've discovered some people get easily nauseated with more traditional control methods, but at least give us the option to try them.

I think the teleport and 90 degree turns work well. I also see why they'd stick to just one type of movement. Of course they wanna have the same kind of locomotion across all the game modes to keep it intuitive for even the most casual of gamers, but there's also a bit of a competetive element to every mode(even the co-op quests have leaderboards), and different movement modes would inevitably lead to an uneven playing field.

As for savepoints, not so sure. I think if they had those it might reduce replayablitiy drastically. As it is I think it took us around 25 min to reach the end of the Jumbotron quest. With savepoints we'd beat the thing no problem, but without them the challenge becomes surviving till the end in one go. And we are going to keep replaying this until we've beaten it, right?
