    Pathologic -- more first-person horror on the way, Huzzah!

    Sounds interesting... I hope they can pull it off.

    Here's the press release from Blue's News:
    Buka sends along word of plans for a new horror/adventure game in the works at developer Ice-pick Lodge called Pathologic due for release in the fourth quarter of this year:

    Pathologic is a unique example of a dramatic game, which directly affects the player’s state of mind.

    …In the depths of the Ancient Steppe appeared a weird town. Once a small drover settlement scattered around the monstrous Abattoir, it unexpectedly developed into a mysterious, isolated establishment with an odd social structure. This odd society has managed to survive for several generations. It could have continued to aspire, were it not for a sudden outbreak of some enigmatic, lethal and inescapable disease, which begins to mercilessly slaughter the denizens inhabiting the area. Even science has proven helpless in finding a cure, or at least providing some explanation.

    … Three outsiders arrive in the contaminated town. The first was a highly-educated Bachelor with a ruthless manner of investigation, assigned by the provincial authorities. The second one is a far-sighted Ripper with a reputation of an ingenious surgeon, in search of his father's terrible heritage. The last character is an eccentric girl, possessing mystic healing abilities, that could become the town’s heavenly salvation were it not for the constant fear in her dejected eyes and fresh memory of the horrors of her recent past…

    Each of them must survive in this hell and play a vital role in the fate of the doomed town…

    One of them could be you. The show is about to begin.

    The atmosphere of the game reproduces the tense feeling of constant danger, maddening awareness of the enemy’s invincibility. You’ll witness dreadful images of city agony, incessant death of the infected world and dramatic tragedies of the doomed people

    Key features:

    • A bizarre combination of first-person game, role-playing features, non-linear plot and real time flow;
    • The town has a life of its own, it constantly changes and adequately reacts to the player's behaviour and random circumstances;
    • Well-balanced proportion of random factors and pre-arranged events;
    • Original enemy concept – omnipresent, omniscient, invisible infection;
    • 3 unique campaigns, several endings;
    • Original graphic concept and photorealistic portraits of NPCs;
    • A complicated system of context-sensitive music arrangement. Artistic sound direction;
    • A large variety of individual survival and resource-hunting strategies under the resource hunger conditions;
    • 3 heroes act independently: when one chosen, the two rejected heroes act on their own, plotting against the player.

    Publisher is http://www.buka.com/

    Sounds fairly cool to me. Looks like we'll have a long while to wait for this one, though.

    Ambition meets reality...they'll probably strip it of its features one by one until it's just another FPS with a disease theme. Or maybe a remake of Dr. Mario.

    Either way, this screen is slightly unnerving. It's the face mask and eyes that does it, I think.

    Now that's neat.

    Call of Cthuluholulh was supposed to have something similar, but now doesn't.

    22 months later...

    This project is obviously coming along. The features list on the web sites still looks the same as the intended features list, which seems promising :)

    You can find screenshots at pathologic-game.com and GMX Media.

    I'll note that the GMX Downloads page will ask for an (unverified) name and email address and then tell you that there are no downloads. You can get an E3 trailer from the official game site, however. I haven't seen it myself, though, so I can't comment further. The FAQ link on the GMX pages is also currently empty, but I gather those pages are new, so I guess more content will come in time.

    Still sounds intriguing.

    edit: ...and I guess "due for release in the fourth quarter of [2004]" (see top of this thread) turned out to be a little unfeasible!

    404'd!

    The engine's looking dated, but if the gameplay delivers I won't care.

    I'll continue this original thread... (Sorry that I didn't notice it and created a new one.)

    Anyway, Play.com lists it as "Out now. Waiting for delivery of stock." at price 43.5€

    Gotta try the demo from:

    ...as Shakey-Lo kindly pointed out.

    I had a quick go... not quite sure what to think of it. I'll try a bit more of it tonight. It's definitely a bit rough around the edges and the broken english is quite noticeable - "My head breaks. It is neccessary for a rest." I sometimes wonder why the voiceover artists don't just say "Look mate, this doesn't make a whole lot of sense, give me 10 seconds with a pen and paper and I could translate it into proper english".
    Having said that the broken english does add to the whole surreal angle that they're going for so maybe its not that bad.
    I'll try and post more impressions later on.

    It sounds really promissing.

    Sorry folks. Coming from a long-time fan of horror, adventure, FPS, and open-ended gaming.....this is NOT my cup of tea. I think it is a stinker. Completely lacks any polish whatsoever. It is almost so bad it's good. Shame. The art-style (I really liked the sepia-toned outdoors) was fresh.

    The voice overs seem random and don't fit with what the characters are saying at all :S Also, I don't understand what's going on, the bad english and lack of real explanation doesn't help

    Possible spoilers below, but I severly doubt they are, since I don't even know what's going on myself :S

    So, I go to the woman who tells me to help the "infected" people - now who are the infected people? Are the the ones in the houses of the infected area, or are they those wierd cloaked, facelesss sand type people? Either way, I tried to give them that bottle of painkiller and i dunno, i think I ended up drinkinig it myself :S

    Then i gave a poor man a load of cash and that got my reputation up anyway, so didnt need to do the painkiller thing - I went to see the woman agian and she told me where this man was that wanted to kill me but now doesn't :S Then I speak to him and don't know what to do next, but go outside and and raped by these men who put me in jail for some reason (really, truelly I have no idea what's going on at this point) and so I pick up a gun from a corpse and try to shoot the guards but i can't cos the wierd "infection sand" keeps attacking me :S and you can't dodge it in jail cos there's not enough space. So I ended up just dying in my cell, horribley confused. Also, when I got to the cell anyway, it said I had failed in some way :S (I'm not quite sure).

    If anyone has any ideas of what's going on or could explain things to me, then please go ahead

    Gamescom trailer for Pathologic 2. (It's a remake, being sold as a sequel, to avoid confusion with the HD remaster of the original game.)

    If you can follow along with the development here, it sounds fire.

    Here's another trailer from a year ago.
