Did you also know that you can knockout a fully aware (alert level 3) enemy who is charging you, if you are in full darkness and lean forward when swinging the blackjack?
...that you can blackjack enemies who have been stunned by a flashbomb. Think I just assumed it would not work because they were in an alerted state, until I saw it mentioned in a walkthrough. Been playing Thief games since 2002 and only discovered this today.
Do you have any "late to the party" things to share, where you discovered them after having played Thief games for years?

Also works when you do it from behind and it's way easier too.
I discovered the secret door at the end of the main office of Shoalsgate last week.

I remember it took me a couple of playthroughs to realise that moss arrows actually cover a lot more that just the little blobs that appear. I always looked at it and thought "pffft that's useless" and didn't ever use them
Took me years to realise there were keybindings for certain inventory items. I had been scrolling through my entire inventory every time to get something
I played the first Thief after beating System Shock 2, it was only then when I learned that you can actually climb up ledges by holding space. Explained many situations I got myself into in SS2.
the most important thing i learned was the diagonal jump for extra distance, along with the leaning forward bj
Offtopic but the background ambient "pulse" soundtrack in that clip takes me back. So simple but brings back memories of what a great atmospheric game SS2 is.
Maybe Debrell didn't play the tutorial. I always play the tutorial in games, but not everyone does. Plus it is easy to forget little things even if you have if not overyly mentioned by the game again.
Discovered an exploit in Escape. If you run from a chasing enemy to a point they cannot reach you, such as jumping down from that opening that leads into the void, or one of the places you can duck to get into in the opening stairs area, sometimes the chasing enemy will run off to get help as if they are in "flee" mods. So you can then just come back out and chase them down, and they won't attack you.
I've only recently found out that guards alert to stray arrows.
I never claimed SS2 didn't have a tutorial for climbing, it's possible that I either forgot that part or ignored that particular tutorial.
Not directly game related but it was 2014 before I realised Ion Storm Austin wasn't some guy named Austin that had acquired an inexplicably awesome nickname. I always imagined he was some grandee in the community, maybe related to T2X or something.
Well, I still can't quite believe American McGee is the name of a real person.
The craziest thing is listening to Romero telling his multidecade old anecdotes from id and he says something like "Then me and Adrian were like blabla and American said..." -wut? It's just weird. To them it's just another name but to and outside observer it really sounds strange to refer to someone with an adjective. Imagine if Prince had change his name to "Majestic" instead of The Artist.
Oddly I just found this out last night. In Trickster's Gem Mine biodome level, in a corridor stripped with shadows I was just playing around and swung on a charging guard and knocked him out. I was so confused. I also found out later, like 05, that you can knock them out with alertness by hitting the back of the head repeatedly vs them dying if you hit them from the front.
I've logged countless hours going over every inch of the game too, so it makes me wonder what else I'm missing.
Oh dear, I have now discovered that you can blackjack guards who are hunting you with their swords in the air, from both front and back if they haven't spotted you yet.
I am sure I vaguely remember trying this many years ago and the guard just reacting as a Haunt would if you blackjacked them (ie they stagger for a second or two before recovering). I wonder if this is some sort of NewDark change, or I am just misremembering.
And to think - SLIGHT SPOILER ALERT - I did the long trek home in Assassins by avoiding all enemies, because I thought blackjacking them would just make them angrier. That Iron Man could have been achieved so much simpler![]()
It was either Escape or Strange Bedfellows. I'd played Thief for years, and one day while replaying I discovered an extra area with a couple bugbeasts and a tree that I'd completely missed
Yes, it´s Escape and inside that tree there´s a readable (M12RITL):
page_0: "Draws the scribed Star, marks the Compasses. The Eye, shows the \
marksey lines of power.
Marks the Compass Borning, the Compass Leaf, the Stormsie Compass, the \
Flamesie Compass, the Compass Tidestream, the Compass Stone, the \
Compass Darkness... etc...
It would be cool, if not already existing, if there was a FM with these different compasses as the central point to the mission.
These compasses are the pedestals in Constantine's ritual circle.
