They accidentally released it on XB1 though. People have been streaming it and all. But yeah, official release is on thw 25th.
Steam says it's releasing Monday, on the 24th.
But hell, if they've already released it on the XB1, accident or not, they should just go ahead and let everyone else have it. IT'S ONLY FAIR, FROM!
It goes live at 5 EST, folks! Get stoked!
Make that 6.
I'm getting stoked for having to go to sleep and playing tomorrow.![]()
I can't really play it until Friday, so I feel you here. Though I will play it enough to run up to the entrance, and test out the new waters.
edit: That was, by and far, the easiest DLC to gain access to.
Don't know if I can say the same thing about the game itself. When I walked out onto the snowfield, the first thing I noticed were bloodstains...everywhere!

LOL, apparently, if you bought the Deluxe Edition of the game back before release (like me), you're not getting the DLC. It's not downloading for me, and many other Deluxe preorderers reported the same problem. I wouldn't be able to play it now anyway, and they'll probably fix it soon, but still, this launch together with the XB1 fiasco is just ... facepalm
Apparently your problem was fixed pretty quick, Malleus. The Deluxe edition people only missed out of the launch by a couple of hours, which, yeah, kinda sucks, considering you paid more for the game at release than most, but it's not terrible.
Just in case anyone else runs into this issue, after I installed the DLC and warped to the (Cleansing Chapel) bonfire from the Firelink Shrine, the NPC wouldn't appear until I completely exited the game and restarted it again.
Anyway, didn't get to play it for too long yet but what I have played so far has been glorious. Just made it to the next bonfire (not counting the one at the entrance) after a couple of deaths and heart attacks along the way... The graphic overhaul of the icons and some other things is a nice touch as well.
I've played it for about half an hour. It's pretty awesome from what little I've seen, but I can't go any farther until this Friday, because I promised a friend I wouldn't play it until I could drag it over to his stupid house to play it on his big stupid TV.
AND I WANNA PLAY IT NAO!![]()
Strange that there has been such little discussion about this DLC compared with the others. I thought that it was great (apart from the tedium of battling through the underground fly-beast hell hole, although it seemed quite short for some reason despite covering a large area. I think that this probably had a lot to do with the relatively short distances between bonfires though. The new enemy types were quite interesting -- although some, particularly the Followers and the Wolves (although very cool and great to be actually fighting something not undead), were a tad easy for a high level character -- with a few of these being quite challenging (e.g. Edward Scissor hands, I'm looking at you).
I had actually thought that I finished it a couple of weeks ago but played it again last week and discovered that I had actually missed the first boss completely. As a result, my route through the game was probably quite different to most people. After reading a warning message before the large bridge I presumed that it was going to collapse so went down the ladder instead and as a result ended up encountering the final boss first. While the first boss was a very cool fight, it wasn't particularly hard compared to some of the others in the game, although I did have help in the second half. The other boss was a little bit disappointing though I felt. Maybe I got lucky, but I managed to beat the duo on my first attempt. Once the human was taken care of I didn't have too many issues with the beast.
Technically, there's no first and second boss in the DLC, but a main one and an optional one. Your route was as valid as anyone else's. I crossed the bridge the first time I went there, but didn't occur to me to cut it down after I did everything else. Anyway, I didn't really like the bosses. The optional is just and NPC with the doggo, but at least the latter has an interesting moveset, and the main boss isn't too interesting either, plus the whole 'surprise, third phase!' thing only works exactly once, and after that it's an annoying grind to get to the third phase every time you die.
The DLC itself was quite fun though, I really liked the area and the new enemies were interesting too, even if some of them pissed me off the first time I fought them (like "Edward Scissor hands" as you called him, and his buddies). The new weapons are a mixed bag - they're good design wise (and have unique weapon arts, which is nice), but the base movesets are disappointing for heavy weapons (you see the enemies do all these cool swings and moves, but when you equip them it's just 4 kinds of vertical slashes), and of course the best weapon among them is a curved sword. There's also the arena, which can be fun - I played a bunch of 3v3 for giggles, but it needs more maps to keep it interesting.
I liked the DLC too, but it was over quite quickly, and while I don't usually complain about games' length, in Dark Souls' case getting immersed in a big world is part of the appeal, so it fell a bit short in that sense. I also didn't understand the story at all; it didn't feel like it filled in any of the gaps from the main game but just made a bunch of oblique references to the Ariamas world from DS1. The final boss was fun, but I didn't have the patience to do it on my own and ended up summoning a small army to help me.
Probably a bit more like Freddy Krueger's tools...but the move that got me the first time I came up against one was his "brain drain" (I'm on a roll here with pseudonyms) leap attacks, which I was totally unprepared for. Kind of reminds me of some of the bother I went through with these guys in the main game:
Unfortunately for me the way the story was delivered initially failed to build up any deep sort of connection with the world's events (but not the world itself, which was consistently beautiful and atmospheric) beyond engendering a healthy case of nostalgia. And yet, it was only after getting bested by Sister Friede that advised me to "Return from whence thou cam'st. Yuria surely awaits thee.", and, "Leave us be, Ashen One.
Thou art the Lord of Londor and have thine our subjects to guide", that I Started to get more curious about the connection between the DLC and the game. Sadly Yuria isn't around anymore so I can't see what new dialogue she has. I have done a small amount of searching for more info on the Lore and came across some interesting comments:
So Sister Friede, founder of the Sable Church of Londor and elder sister of Yuria, is working with Allfather Lloyd, supposed founder of the Way of White, whose Cathedral of the Deep became corrupted by Aldrich's followers and the Deep. Both institutions which, by the way, are heavily related to the Pilgrims of Londor, given Yuria's relationship to Yoel and all the Pilgrim statues we find in the Cathedral of the Deep. I had always thought the mural of the little animal found all along the walls of the Cathedral of the Deep was a cat or something, but now it seems pretty obvious that it's a sable, as in the animal. https://www.reddit.com/r/darksouls3/...res_a_guide_i/

Considering comments about the length of the DLC, I think I'll wait until the second one and buy them both in bulk so I have a decent amount of gameplay to go with.
That's what I'd suggest.
Don't get me wrong, the DLC wasn't terrible by any stretch of the word. The atmosphere was incredible, and it was fun to explore. It just didn't have the same oomph the previous Dark Souls DLCs had. It didn't do anything too new, or offer up any new twists to the storyline. It was just a little more Dark Souls 3.
Yeah, I don't doubt it's good, I just have too many games I need to play in my backlog right now.
You make me jealous. My problem is that I have no games that I'm looking forward too play. Maybe DH2. But I had problems finishing the DH1 DLC. Still haven't done that, so I'm not sure I should play DH2 now.
It's so bad that I actually started a 2nd play-through of DS3 this week.I played DS3 in June/July. And now that I played this DLC it made me wanna go through it again. Still fun.
Honestly, I have quite a lot of games in there that I'm not really looking forward to play all that much, but I bought them for research purposes. I took advantage of the recent Halloween sale on Steam because I'm trying to write about horror game mechanics.
