Wow, that's awesome, thanks a lot for that!
Regarding the screenshot: I'll do one when I played a bit and then exit the game, that's usually the occasion where the several processes turn up.
Here's a beta with borderless windowed mode. Because the 'direct load' option has not been ported, the desktop will be visible during level changes. The installer is an Update Edition, so keep the texture pack from 1.2.0.
Now that I'm at it, I'll try to get a bit more done on the VU over the holidays, and hopefully get at least an official beta out.
The screenshot - can you do one in detail view, sorted by name, for a case where you have more than two DX2-related processes?

The borderless window mode works nicely. I haven't run into the multiple processes thing yet, but, I can't exit the game without the game not responding anymore.
Edit: Just had a crash when I wanted to travel to the WTO terminal. It showed 2x the DX2Main.exe process not responding in the task manager, see the screenshot. https://imgur.com/a/75pE78g
Edit 2: Dang... looks like it ALWAYS crashes when I try to travel to the WTO air terminal... it crashes while loading the new area.

If you haven't already, definitely try disabling AV, then do a proper reboot. (AV and unknown issues from long-running Windows are the main things that can interfere with the game relaunching itself at level transitions.)
Is that crash limited to one specific save, or is it a general thing?
Edit: I'm going over the thread to note down old bug reports, and here is someone having an issue similar to yours. Except that the solution - disabling shadowplay - didn't work for you. But I wonder if there's some other overlay-type thing interfering? Have you tried disabling the Windows 'game bar'?

I just tried: disabling Windows Defender, no change, the game still crashes every time I try to travel to the WTO air terminal; disabling the game bar, no change, still crashing; disabling Shadowplay again, still crashing; disabled both the game bar and Shadowplay, and deactivated Windows Defender, no change, still crashing.
If that helps: The crash is on the loading screen of the new area, at about 2/3 to 3/4 of the loading bar. I can't really tell whether or not it's savegame specific, as it's the only savegame I have. If you want, I can upload the savegame.
If you can start a new game, then it's probably that one save which is corrupt - not likely fixable, unfortunately.
Edit: Please do upload it to confirm.
Disabling all the stuff could help with fullscreen, and/or the crash or hang on exit - please try that too.
Edit 2: Disable Logitech Gaming Software too, if you have it.

Here is the link to the savegame: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1oK7...ew?usp=sharing I uploaded the whole SaveGames folder, because I wasn't sure which one is the quicksave.
Oh, and, I already tried it after disabling the Logitech Gaming Software, which, at least for the fullscreen issue, didn't solve. I'll try again with the crash issue though, thanks for the tip.
That save is working fine for me. I tried it with the GOG version and the European DVD version of the game (I don't have the Steam version). Also, my Win10 is two feature updates behind, as I'm unable to upgrade past 1809 because 0xc190012e... So if it's Windows messing things up, then I probably can't reproduce it.
You can try uploading your options files (Options.ini and VisibleOptions.ini) so that I can try it again with your settings.
Also, if you have the in-game multisampling option set at anything other than 1, then be sure to set it to 1 until you've resolved these issues. (That setting has caused lots of weird behaviour for T3 on Win10, may well be the case here too.)
It crashes with an error 0xc0000005 after a clean install of deus ex IW from gog then with the visible upgrade.
Just checking in to give a heads-up, I've been working again on my font mod, and making some great progress. I'll post it here when it's ready.
I tried the same, but it worked fine. Have you tried the usual stuff: reboot, then disable AV? Also, will the unpatched game run?
I had a look at porting the T3 patch for loading screen text size, but in this game that's handled in a completely different way - so an easy fix is not possible.
Yea tried those. Funny how the base game runs fine though.
No worries. I've just finished the mod.

Hello, first things first : thanks for your patches for TDS and DE:IW, they're really helpful. And I just want to tell you I've had the same black screen hang problem as Idsertian and stoo, and for me the culprit was "Razer Synapse Service Process.exe"
I don't know if you'll be able to make something out of it but maybe.
Thanks, I've added it to the note in the first post - together with Logitech Gaming Software, which was not listed.
Always love seeing TDS and DE2 continuing to get support.
I've always wished the source code for these two games had surfaced. Would have been cool to try and port the full first person system from DE2 back into TDS and get rid of body awareness. With the source code, so much would have been possible.
Yeah, me too.
Yep - would be one of the best improvements that could be made. That, and fixing the 'skating' bug.Would have been cool to try and port the full first person system from DE2 back into TDS and get rid of body awareness.
Everyone, please look in your cupboard for that old DVD-R that came with that Xbox devkit you bought on EBay, and which happens to have the T3 and DX2 source code on it.
I've been playing this recently, and I will say the latest VU patch is much improved and makes a much better experience than the last time I played. Great work!
The game works almost flawlessly, with one hitch: Sometimes, when I load my saved game, it will crash. I have never been able to get a screenshot of the error because I can never focus the error box and it only stays up for a second or two, but it says something about "VIKTORIA" and has some crash dump information.
* The crash only happens the first time I try to load a saved game. If the load succeeds, it will work great from then on.
* If the crash happens, it doesn't matter how many times I restart DX:IW. It will always crash. I will need to reboot in order to try again.
* The crash can happen whether or not I launch via Steam or from the DX:IW VU shortcut.
I'm happy to help debug and test if you have any suggestions or thoughts on things to try. Thanks again for all your hard work!
This sounds like something external interfering, rather than a game bug. Virus checkers have been known to make life hard for these games - try disabling it, then do a proper reboot to make sure it's not active. If it helps, see if there's a way to make the AV leave the game install alone.
Could be.
I don't have any 3p anti-virus installed, but I tried disabling windows virus and threat protection, and putting the DX:IW folders on the exclusions list, but I still saw the problem. It always works if I launch right after a reboot though, so it's just a minor headache. And now I just finished the game, so I will probably forget about this until I replay it again in another few years!
I'm trying to get this to work on my Windows 11 machine... can't get it to work. Everytime I try to start a new game, after it plays the intro, before it shows the loading screen, I get a black screen and nothing goes. I can only reboot my machine.
Deus Ex IW with Visible Upgrade works fine on my Windows 10 machines though.
What I already tried to fix it: Stop Logitech Gaming Software. No change. Stop NTKDaemon.exe, a file which is supposed to make trouble with this game and the upgrade. No change. I also deactivated an autostart app which I suspected might have to do with the game not working (NIHardwareAccessibilityHelper.exe), but, that didn't do anything either.
What I could do now is run Deus Ex IW with Visible Upgrade on my Windows 10 machine, and stream it with Steam Link on my Windows 11 machine. But, I really wonder why it's not working at all.
Edit: Ok, so I just had 2 game crashes/freezes on my Windows 10 machine as well. Once when I quit DXIW, it simply froze with the menu screen, and I also got a game freeze when loading the Tarsus Apartments area. I don't know, either the game itself or the Visible Upgrade is extremely sensitive to anything running on the computer. It just doesn't work for me, on any of my computers.
Edit 2: Ok, so, I just analyzed via the Windows task manager on which processes the DX2Main.exe waits while it hangs. First, I had the NIHardwareAccessibilityHelper.exe as the culprit, which I closed. Then, when DXIW didn't close properly when I quit the game, it was some Logitech G Discord process, which is probably part of one of my Logitech utility softwares which I have installed.
I really wonder why DXIW/Visible Upgrade is so finicky that it hangs with literally any process running on your computer. Never had such issues with the Sneaky Upgrade for Thief 3...

Did you try the usual things: shut down completely (hold Shift while clicking shutdown in the start menu), then after rebooting disable all things anti-virus?
What's happening when you load a new level is that the game launches an intermediate exe (IonLauncher, which shows the black cover screen), then shuts down. The intermediate exe then launches the new game instance. Apparently virus checkers find this programs-launching-programs very suspicious.
Can't really say why DX2 would be more affected than T3, or why it would be worse on Win11 (which I don't have). Also, no idea why non-security related process would interfere.
Btw. you don't need to reboot to get away from the hanging black screen. Hit the Windows key, activate the virtual desktop overview, then drag the black fullscreen window to a new virtual desktop. (At least this works on Win10.) Then you can kill the IonLauncher process.
Thanks, I didn't know that trick.
What I did now is plug my monitor and my keyboard and mouse into my Windows 10 laptop, and play on that one. DXIW with Visible Upgrade is so old/ressource friendly that it runs well on my laptop, and it works really well on that, for whatever reason when it doesn't work on my Win 11 and Win 10 desktop PC's.
I remember I already posted in this thread once (end of 2019) because I had similar issues trying to run DXIW Visible Upgrade on my Windows 10 desktop. Dunno why, but, Thief 3 with Sneaky Upgrade always worked much better on my machines.
I installed this mod, then later deleted the game folder. I then reinstalled the game and tried to reinstall the mod with it. It won't install because it says "The Visible Upgrade version 1.2.0 was previously installed. It will have to be removed first. Do you want to continue the installation?" If I click "Yes" it says "Uninstalling the previous version failed. The system cannot find the file specified." Any ideas what I can do to fully remove the previous mod install so I can install it again?
