Thread: Hollow Knight

HK would definitely be in the running for me for GOTY, if it wasn't for Breath of the Wild.

I can't pick a single favorite this year, so I'm just gonna settle with my collective goties, and be done with it.

Beat the Broken Vessel last night. I am so bad at this game, it took me over an hour of tries. I'm kind of worried that going forward the game will be too tough for a wuss like me. For the vets, how does this fight compare to the ones that come after it?

Still amazed by this game and how big it is. New areas keep opening up, sometimes going deeper and sometimes just leading back to old areas. And even when I go back through the old areas multiple times, I keep finding new things - some that I just couldn't access before but some that I just never noticed.

This could be my GOTY! I doubt it would surpass BOTW, but stay tuned.

There are probably two fights I'd consider harder than it, Soul Master, and the second fight with Hornet. There are a couple three more if (this one's a bigger spoiler than the previous two, so beware) you're going for the true ending.

The Coliseum of Fools was a blast. Only did the first two trials though. I like how they fake you out a few times to make you think you've won (but you haven't)..

Deepnest was really frightening, but I loved every minute of it. Queen's Gardens is an awful, curse worthy trip through way too many thorn covered...whatever. But I made it through.

I've got my nail fully upgraded, and I've cleaned out all the stores that I know of - do I need Geo for anything else?

I think I'm coming up to the end now, only a few bosses left and I think I've been to every major area. It will be sad day when I actually finish this thing.

Knightmare King Grimm is hard. That is all.

    Love the unique intro though.

I think he's probably going to break me.

EDIT: Here's a sample video of one attempt where I managed to stagger him at least once:

*Raises his fists and shouts at the sky*

    I HAVE DONE IT!

    THE RADIANCE IS NO MORE!

    107% COMPLETION.

    RAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWRRRRR!

And yes, that does include -all- optional bosses (including all trials at the Colosseum of Fools), ghost bosses, dream bosses (including beating White Defender a few times, as well as Grey Prince Zote) and both Grimm and Nightmare King Grimm.

I also filled my charm inventory, got two unbreakable versions of fragile charms, all notches, all mask and soul vessel shards, all dream essence, the White Palace with Path of Pain, all Hunter Journal entries, etc, etc, etc...

    I'll say it again:

    RAAAAAAAAWWWWWWRRRRRR!

Seriously, Team Cherry, you fucking kicked ass, but BOY....what a HUGE adventure for such tiny bugs (43 hours or so of total play time...eeep).

    I'd say so.

Also, congrats to MrDuck. I had to duck out on the Nightmare King Grimm fight eventually.

    Zerker <3

NKG was challenging, for sure, and I died several times, but he was no worse than other bosses I've faced from games old and new. The bosses in Bloodborne's DLC, The Old Hunters, come to mind. Save for Lady Maria and The Living Failures, the other three took me more than 50 tries...each. But I beat them all in the end 'cuz I'm a stubborn bugger.

    Wooooo!

TR was also challenging, but I died far less than with NKG.

I finished the game before most (or possibly any) of the DLC came out, and once it was out it had been too long since I played it. I'm thinking that now that Hollow Knight is complete, I may have to replay the entire game including DLC. (It's a shame there's no PS4 version, since I would've liked to (re-)play this on a big screen, and I don't think that Hollow Knight is the kind of game I'd want to stream from my PC... I don't think it would improve my survival chances.)

Well, it just came out on Switch, and it sounds like a flawless port, so there's one option for you.

MrDuck, I actually ragequit on Bloodborne too, so there's that I'm sure there's a post by me about that somewhere. I did beat The Radiance though.

    Awwww, Zerks... :'(

It can certainly be unfairly punishing at times, but I still enjoyed the lil'scamp, DLC and all. <3

Ah, good, good, so you got the true ending then. :3

And hey, the Radiance does offer a solid challenge, so there you go, bravo, my dude!

... doing a bit of thread necromany.

After originally finishing pre-DLC Hollow Knight on PC, I'm now playing the PS4 version (which includes all the DLC). It's great to play it on a big screen with a good sound system, but what's even better: I'm an impatient gamer when it comes to not being able to continue and tend to check out guides and walkthroughs pretty quickly if I run into a wall. That's also what I did a few times with Hollow Knight. However, this time around I've forgotten many of the specific details, but they're still in my subconscious, so when I'm not entirely sure where to go or what to do I have a hunch. It still took me a while to figure out how to continue after Greenpath, for instance, but just the knowledge that I've done it before and that I've mastered all these challenges makes me much more relaxed about being temporarily stuck.

Quick question to those of you who have played the DLC content: When's the best time to get started on this? And is it likely I'll come upon those bits during normal play, or are they hidden away and it's better to find out online where I have to go to get started on them?

A lovely video on the deceptively simple yet gorgeous animation work on Hollow Knight:

Hmmm....I should get back into Hollow Knight for the final DLC to get my ass pounded by a spike-covered steel gauntlet while adding lime juice on the wounds.

    Fun times!

I gave up on the last section of Path of Pain. After trying to beat it off and on all day yesterday, it wasn’t so much ragequit as sadnessquit, realizing how much time I had wasted without making much progress in my ability. I generally enjoy challenging games, but having to spend an entire day to not get through a 30-second section is disheartening, and now that I’ve quit, I’ll have to redo a bunch of it. I’m very close to the end of the game overall, but after that I’ve kinda lost the motivation to finish it.

Still, an amazing game as a whole; I just wish they’d catered a bit less to the “git gud” crowd, especially with the DLC, which isn’t really separate in the Switch version.

Well, to be fair the DLC is not stuff you access easily, and often tends to be content that is more on the vein of "So, you want an extra challenge then, eh". True, they could have aimed for some more casual fare in there, but on the other hand, when you find a place called "The Path of Pain" you bet your ass you're gonna git gud or get quit.

I just need to finish the final DLC, but I'll be honest: feeling a bit lazy since it's pretty much extended/punishing boss rushes, and the only real incentive for me is to fight the few exclusive bosses in it.
