Sounds good to me. Jesh says he might be able to play this weekend too, and he's got it downloaded, but that was for Saturday. I'll check he's good with Sunday too.

Edit: So unfortunately, Jesh can't make Sunday. But I'd still be up for a game. Maybe we can convince Sulphur to join us.
Of course, if anyone else is interested in playing Sea of Thieves, you're more than welcome to join in! We need a full complement so we can play our instruments at eachother

Thanks to Jason, demagogue, Malf and Jeshibu for a nice game, even if we didn’t hear dema most of the time. Out of interest: did you guys update TS3 or did you stick to the old version?

We started with a mission called Liquid Gold, which had us head for a little town, grab the speedboat and get out of there. All in all, things went well in spite of resistance - though then we got to the boat and Jesh reversed over me while I was in the water... so I drowned while the others all made it away. Might’ve had something to do with my leadership skills.

Next mission, Golden Pheasant, started us off underwater in scuba gear - and with the shittiest guns Arma has to offer. A first attempt at making it to the base where we were supposed to find incriminating documents, blow up some vehicles and assassinate an enemy officer didn’t go so well, and the second attempt wasn’t much better until we managed to kill a few soldiers and steal their infinitely better guns. We found the documents, destroyed the vehicles (though dema took us out at the same time) - and then things got weird, as we were all clearly desynced from one another. I came upon a patrol walking in place, and even 10-15 shots wouldn’t take out a single enemy soldier. Everyone saw the others in different places. So we moped out of that Jacob’s Ladder scenario...

... and finished on a chaotic but thrilling Firefight Dorida, where in spite of an utter lack of leadership on my part we (I think it was Jesh, right?) took out an enemy MRAP after it pretty much decimated us. Huzzah!

The next game will probably be in two weeks. Till then!

Wasn't me, I carried the rockets for Malf's looted launcher and patched him up when he poked around the corner a bit too eagerly.

Good session, lads. Glad I could finally make (most of) one again!

I did update TS3. In-game I got a message in the lower-right that said "Pipe was closed by TS", which I assume was behind the sound issue. A quick google search suggests the last time some people got that error back in 2017, downgrading after an update fixed it. So that makes it sound like an update issue. I could hear everybody else at least. Fun times.

dema, next time you join a session we could try and look into this beforehand. It might resolve itself if it's something to do with the Task Force Radio plugin - I think it's possible that this only installs properly after you've launched the game once. Anyway, let's look into this.

Edit: Also, it's been good having you join a session again, Jeshibu. There's been a distinct lack of deadpan Dutch snark lately.

Old one. My problems in the first couple missions were due to my mic jack being plugged into the wrong thing because I'm an idiot.

(though dema took us out at the same time)
Nah, that was me. I was yelling into my mic the whole time wondering why no one was responding. I don't think I've ever had an explosion blow me clear over a 6 foot high wall before.

To be fair, there is a non-zero chance than when I open up the inventory for a weapons cache (which I did around then), I'll accidentally set a timed explosive since I'm still not used to the UI (selecting items instead of turning off the middle-mouse menu), and I think I might have done that around that time. There were a lot of explosives going off around that time to clear out the vehicles, though, so who knows.

Quick reminder for the people hoping to join the Saturday session: make sure to update your Arma 3, because otherwise you might be locked out of the game when we want to start. (I think there might have been quite a hefty update in parallel with the Contact DLC having been released.)

Fun game today! We played Sigma Quadrant 8 (Altis), another mission in the series we started a couple of years ago. While the mission designer is way too much in love with placing MRAPs with grenade launchers everywhere, we did make our way across Altis, liberating (is that the right euphemism?) two villages, taking care of an outpost and finally conquering a CSAT base built around the Altis dome. We weren't necessarily altogether structured and tactical in our approach, but we'd said early on that we'd command by democracy or, failing that, anarchy, which we did. Some oddities along the way, such as the laser sights on Malf's gun being visible in Night Vision to some of us but not to others, so it was only moderately helpful when he pointed out MRAPs to us with his invisible laser pointer. Thanks to jason, dema, Jeshibu, Malf and PigLick; sadly the latter only managed to join when we were already almost done, but next time we'll let you take out an MRAP or two, PigLick, promise!

Next game will be in three weeks, on Saturday, 24 August. As always, I'll send out reminders via Steam. Till then, avoid the rain of grenades!

If anyone is still on the fence about getting in on this Arma action, the Humble Bohemia Bundle is a good entry point.

Has anyone played the Take on Helicopters/Mars games btw? I might get the $1 tier just for those.

I've not played Take on Helicopters, though I did buy it years ago. From what I've heard, it uses the somewhat more complex heli model that they added as an option in Arma 3. Anyone who likes flying helicopters in Arma but isn't a big fan of the combat aspect might get a kick out of this one, added to which Seattle makes for a decidedly different environment from the usual Arma battlefields, where you get towns and villages but not all that many modern urban environments.

Weird session today: either due to bad mission design or because Arma's gonna Arma, we got the following: one mission where mines placed on the road didn't explode when MRAPs and trucks went straight over them; missions where only two of us were actually on the map as human beings, while the others were seagulls but couldn't do anything; missions where the closer we got to the objective, the more lag we had, because the mission creator had placed hundreds of enemy AI just waiting for us (henke had a kill count of 50+ IIRC); and missions where the objectives never showed. We also had some issues with dema still not having radio access and Piglick and henke dropping out in mid-mission for some reason.

Nonetheless, when it worked it was a fun session, in particular the early mission Ambush (Stratis), which we tried twice. The first time I touched off the explosives when one of two dangerous MRAPs drove over them, but the trucks got away; the second time it was Jeshibu, I think, who commanded us to victory, even if his mines all turned out to be duds. The final mission, Firefight Alikampos (Stratis) was also enjoyable: a straightforward but not too easy village-clearing mission with a well-placed enemy MRAP almost taking us out with its explosives, until henke got behind it and finished it off. As we were mopping up the last of the enemies, I almost got Jeshibu with a grenade thrown into the corridor where he'd just gone, but he ducked into another room and found the last of the enemy units, getting us to victory. Hooray!

I'm not sure yet whether I'll run the next game in two or three weeks, but I'll let everyone know. Thanks to henke, Jeshibu, jason, Piglick and demagoggles for a fun game!

Are seagulls normally effective bombers in this game?

Unfortunately not. Also, they control worse than pretty much anything else in Arma. Remember those RC plane missions in GTA? Yup, they're that bad.

Anyway, I've now figured out that the next session will be in three weeks, i.e.

    Date: Sat, 14 September 2019
    Time: 3-6pm UK time

I saw a lot of the Arma 3 stuff is on a pretty nice sale right now on Steam, anywhere from ~50-80% off depending on what you buy.

We've just had a successful, if small-scale session, with Jeshibu, henke, Malf and myself. Only one mission was broken, and we won the other three, so hooray for us!

We started with Rezistancia on Altis, the first of a three-part mini campaign, which had us starting in t-shirts and shorts and pretty much nothing else. We did get some starter weapons but very little ammo, so the idea was that we'd rise up against CSAT, which was occupying our little part of the Mediterranean. Our first sortie ended when Jesh flipped the pickup truck by running into a rock (and it wasn't even a big one), but once we'd restarted, we took out a group of enemies with a truck, which got us better gear and radios for three of us, then another truck, and soon we were kitted out. Our task was to blow up an enemy helicopter - which proved more difficult than expected, because the enemy units around the helicopter were more numerous and better at actually shooting us rather than the picturesque landscape around us. Still, we managed, after a difficult firefight, and that helicopter is history.

Next up: Thunder Ridge (Altis), in which we had to find a downed Ghosthawk helicopter, blow it up to make sure the enemy wouldn't get their hands on it, free the survivors from the crash and fly out of there. I'd taken a PCML launcher along, which perhaps wasn't necessary, as there was nothing to shoot it with and it meant I ran out of breath every 2-3 minutes, but we survived the waves of attackers, freed the prisoners and flew into the sunset on our 'liberated' Hummingbird.

Finally, we did another Firefight mission, this time liberating Panagia. It was more difficult than other Firefight missions, because the environment was very green, with trees and bamboo groves surrounding the town. It was also more mysterious by far due to Schroedinger's garage, in which Jesh and others flickered in and out of existence, sometimes while they were being patched up by Malf. Still, though we almost all died in the end (I think two of us were down and the others were hurt), henke took out the last enemy and we took our bloodied selves back to base for tea and biscuits.

The next session will probably be in two weeks (28 September), though I'll confirm soon. Till then!

One of these days I'll have to buy Arma3 and fingers crossed, try a game. Assuming the lag doesn't make it bad...

Piglick plays with us and he's in Australia. His pings are generally very high and there are often problems with the radio, but for the game itself it doesn't seem to be too bad. If internet connections in New Zealand are as good as Australia or even better, you should be fine.
