I get the impression that Avalanche had their "B team" working on Just Cause 4. A shame really.

Been waiting for this game for a while now, and it looks like it's finally coming out....in 4 days:

And maybe this doesn't count as HYPE since it's out already (albeit only in the Epic store), but this looks like it could be fun. Blatant Dark Souls ripoff, but still.

I've decided to try and replay Far Cry 2 due to all the 10th anniversary articles that were around a few weeks ago. I already tried replaying the game roughly a year ago but back then it didn't click; the articles I've read make me think I should persist with it, though. I have played the whole game before, but that was shortly after it was released, and I don't really remember much other than the gruesome bits where you get out the bullets that hit you, the spreading fires and the merc buddies.

I adore Far Cry 2 and I still felt it turned into a slog by the end and I ultimately just wanted it to be over. I can't imagine playing through the whole thing again. It's long, and more than a little repetitive.

Oops... That post should've been in the "NOW what are you playing?" thread. I shouldn't post before my second or third coffee of the day.

    I'm playing this now.
    Love it.

I'm playing it, too. And I love it, too. Despite directly appropriating many of Dark Souls' systems (with some Breath of the Wild and Journey elements blended in), it has an understated, minimalist flavor all its own. I suppose if I write more it should go in the "what are you playing" thread instead of here.

I think Ashen should have its own thread in the Dark Souls sub-forum. I've just installed ReShade, so I can make screenshots. If people are interested, I could post a few (non-spoiler) screenshots.

I was thinking the same thing. Go ahead and get it started with some screenshots.

    NEW YEAR, same hype

Polygon has a list of 50 upcoming 2019 games here aaaaand it's mostly a bunch of sequels, or spiritual sequels. RPS has a list as well.

    Significant hype:
Cyberpunk 2077 (no confirmed release date)
Ghost of Tsushima (no confirmed release date)
Stormlands - I'm playing Insomniac's Spider-Man now and getting increasingly hyped about this open-world VR action game they're developing.
    Sable
    In The Valley Of Gods

    Some hype:
New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe - which comes out in a little over a week!
The Last Of Us 2 (no confirmed release date)
    Days Gone
    Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
    Void Bastards

Sequels that'll probably be just fine:
    Doom Eternal
    Metro Exodus
    Far Cry Whateveritscalled
    Rage 2
    Psychonauts 2

Looking forward to hearing more about:
Death Stranding (no confirmed release date)
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order - Third person action game by Respawn and I think singleplayer?

I'm usually not one for 3rd person platformers, but I'm finding myself interested in Sea of Solitude. Also Flotsam, since I haven't played a city builder in a long time. I'm also mildly curious whether Journey to the Savage Planet will be any good.

After the E3 demo, I had my hopes up that we'd see Cyberpunk 2077 before the end of the year, but I didn't see it on either of those lists.

Other than that, I see way too much franchise milking. Another Doom, another Rage, another Wolfenstein, Star Wars, Far Cry, GoW, Marvel, MechWarrior, and on and on. I'll cut Shenmue 3 a little slack since it's been ages since the last one.

I'm hoping to finally get to play Memory of a Broken Dimension. It's still my most anticipated game even if it got delayed big time (as most indie titles, I dare say). I know it's still in development, but apparently the dev is no longer working on it full-time, so I have no idea about a possible release date (all I've heard is "it's done when it's done"), so it might get released during 2019, but might also get delayed again a couple of years. It shows a lot of promise; I just hope the dev sticks to the hardcore feel of the prototype and doesn't feel compelled to streamline it too much.

Manifold Garden seems to be getting ready for release this year, so that's something I'm looking forward to.

I will definitely keep an eye on Scorn. The devs apparently got new funding, so they are now going to release the full game at once instead of in episodes, which I think is to be preferred, but it also means that the game got delayed.

Atomic Heart looks interesting and will hopefully be more than a simple shooter. I might not end up playing it, but I will keep an eye on it, and if I'm going to play a shooter/fighting game again, this might be it (together with Scorn).

A Light in Chorus is another game that might get a 2019 release (their website says "arriving on steam", but I guess that could mean a lot of things).

Sea of Solitude is on my list too (and has been for a while). I actually have a lot of games on my list, but most of them have uncertain release dates (I also don't know a whole lot about many of them, but they are games I want to keep an eye on), so there's probably no point in listing them all right now. There is one game I'm extra hyped for, though: Megastructure by Aloft, but it's on hold at the moment while the devs are finishing another game. It's in the same tradition as NaissanceE, which is a game I thoroughly enjoyed.

I love Memory of a Broken Dimension. Wish he'd finish that game off.

On my wishlist I have for "coming soon" games: Tales of the Neon Sea, EITR, The Last Night, Beyond Blue, and Dawn of Man (and quolelis already mentioned Manifold Garden).

The one's I'm most hyped for are Cyberpunk 2077 and a PC release of Red Dead Redemption 2.
(I'm not betting on a PC release of Ghosts of Tsushima, but I'd be happy if it happened.)

The one that hasn't been announced that I hope will be this year is Paradox's Victoria 3.

    What makes you love it?

Hopefully, the delay just means that the game will be as good as it can be (as in "better than it had been if it had been released earlier"), elaborating on what I liked about the prototype.

Before I start rambling, I'd be interested in knowing exactly how popular this kind of game is -- or could be: is it as niche as I think it is? I know a game like MOBD isn't made very often, but is that because the audience doesn't exist or is it because the possibly larger audience is hard to reach?

What makes me love it? It's like stepping into some corrupted universe, with it's own sense of order.

It's very niche. I showed the game off to 2 classes of 30 students (each). Of those, only 3 really liked it. The majority of the rest didn't really understand it.

In my mind, someone makes a game like that because they're driven by the vision, so the audience doesn't play too much into it, except in the sense that if nobody expressed interest it'd push on their self-doubt. But if they have a really good idea of what they want to do, like this guy apparently does since the game is pretty good at sticking to its vision, then I think that's not the problem.

I think that type of game is not made that often because it's not going to come from a studio, but from an individual, and they're more limited in what they can make and how fast they can make it. I've made design docs for two or three games like this myself, but I have so many projects I want to do I don't know when I'd get to them, and they wouldn't come quickly, and not all three.

  23. #248
My ramblings were entirely based on MOBD being as niche as I thought, but halfway through I started second-guessing myself and realized I didn't know exactly what I was talking about anymore, so I deleted that part.

I think MOBD might be the type of game to more often attract people from outside gamer circuits, even people who aren't into gaming at all, which makes the possible audience smaller than it could be, because a majority of those who would be into it will never know about it. I have no real evidence for this, so let's just call it a hunch. I'm talking about audiences here, because I would like to see more games like this being made, but, with such a small audience, they are less likely to get made, so I think the audience does play a role even if the game isn't made with an audience in mind.

Those who are into it might also not be as vocal about it as those who are not into it. When I support a game being developed, I usually let the devs alone, because I don't want to risk swaying them away from their original vision -- and the reason why I decided to support them in the first place -- but with this approach also comes the risk of others, who are more vocal about their negative opinions (and less respectful of the artistic freedom), swaying the devs in a less desirable direction (although maybe more desirable market-wise). I saw this happen with Sylvio 2, which had a great demo and prequel, but which turned into a very different game compared to what made me support the dev in the first place. Sometimes I fear this might also happen to MOBD.

A lot of cool stuff coming out now. Apparently Hong Kong Massacre, from all the way back in post 1 of this thread, came out today on Steam. Pikuniku is coming out in 2 days, and the day after that Derail Valley is coming out!

I played the demo of this after Thirith linked it in the VR thread and really liked it. I can see myself loosing many hours in this thing.

Hong Kong Massacre also seems to want to melt my GPU for reasons unknown.

edit: ah right, it's got an uncapped frame rate and no option to lock to 60. Nice!
