I want to give this a run because Papers, Please was great, but first I have to complete my replay of Cryostasis, which Obra Dinn could have been a spiritual successor to, by the looks of it.

Can't say I'm all that interested anymore. Missing a lot of the more obscure JRPGs the PS1 is renowned for.

The PS1 inparticular was JRPG heaven. Arc the Lad, Grandia, Alundra, Azure Dreams, Final Fantasy 7 & 8 to name a few.

PS2 had some good ones as well though those were predominately 3D style.

What were your favs on the PS1?

I never owned a PS1, so I don't really have any. I was hoping the PS1 Mini would be a bit of a 'Best of' (much like the NES and SNES Minis before it, by and large). Instead, it's more of a 'Sort of'.

    Chrono Cross
    Suikoden
    Xenogears
    Grandia
    Persona
    Parasite Eve
    Vagrant Story
    Valkyrie Profile
    Tactics Ogre
    various Final Fantasies
    Legacy of Kain

It's not like there aren't plenty to chose from!

They're stating the obvious to gamers who keep up with industry current affairs but this article might be helpful for casuals.

    Yeah, it's understandable, no doubt.

Then again, Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid, Abe's Odyssey and Resident Evil all got or will get remakes, and they're all included.

Re: licensing and DualShock; I'm sure Sony could've chosen to do more than they have, had they wanted to.

At the end of the day, they're giving us a much less compelling offering. Their loss.

What an incredibly shitty list of games. At least Japan gets Gradius Gaiden.

I stopped after Diablo 2. Not interested at all.

Warcraft 3 is getting a remaster apparently.

    [edit]
The funny bit, is that Blizzard got boo'd by the crowd when they announced that Diablo game, since it's mobile/tablet only. It's extra funny since that was at their own event, and yet they still got boo'd.

Blizzard caught with their hands in the cookie jar mass-deleting down-votes on their Youtube videos. Oh lordy.

As soon as Blizzard devs told PC gamers to go play something else if they only wanted singleplayer in Diablo 3, they lost me. Such an arrogant thing to say.

This is just the next in a long line of dick moves by the once great company. The PC and the consumer used to matter to them but nope not anymore.

The thing about Gris is that it looks megagorge and phantasmabulous and eyesearing etc., but the gameplay video I saw of it was about as exciting as getting a handjob from someone wearing a cactus needle-covered mitt.

  16. #166
That sounds pretty exciting. Maybe not pleasurable, but certainly exciting.

Just tempering your expectations. Be excited! But also be aghast when your nerve endings pop and flail.

Gris reminds me a lot of the Monument games for some reason.

Microsoft is serious about PC games, they just bought InXile and Obsidian.

Meh. All the good KS based companies are all getting bought up. First Harebrained now inExile and Obsidian. Meh.

For me its the indepedence that made them all so great, and with KS the people help (with their dollars) decide on what shape the game will take.

With the gaming megacorps you get what their market rrsearch teams tells them = the best profit whilst also sticking to tried, tested and safe types of games, rather than taking risks.

The next to get bought up will be Night Dive. Thats my bet. System Shock license is worth quite a bit. And the more IPs ND acquires, the more tempting they will become to companies like EA, Take 2 etc etc.

Well, good or bad, whoever's doing this is making smart purchases. MS knows that one of their problems is that they don't have many high-quality internal studios pumping out exclusives, and Ninja Theory, Obsidian, etc. are known for putting out really good games that didn't light the market on fire. Coupled with MS's marketing, they could actually stand a chance to be successful before the publishing execs run them into the ground by iterating a single IP formula ad infinitum. Kickstarter is none of these studios' saviour at this point, because a) it's not a source of regular funding, and b) the level of backer investment has remained roughly in the ~3-5 million USD ballpark, which means scoping smaller projects and a smaller workforce in general if they want to survive.

Anyway, how can anyone miss Obsidian and inXile coming under the same wing? It's like a Black Isle & Interplay reunion, only now they're toiling under a corporate hegemony.

    I'm more pissed about Harebrained.

And what happened to Rare after purchase from Microsoft should be a good example of what goes on over there.

Yeah, studios bought by MS do tend to die slow, horrible deaths by corporate culture absorption (see Lionhead too).

Still, in related news, Crackdown 3 is coming to Windows!

Ninja Theory, Obsidian and InXile will retain their creative freedom.

The bigger picture for MS will be selling people Xbox Game Pass subscriptions, Game Pass was just announced for PC the other week. They will follow a similar model to video streaming services to entice people to sub:- making high production value, critical acclaim bait games that are exclusive. The likes of Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, etc are willing to take losses on critically acclaimed programming yet low viewership shows to increase the overall prestige of their service.

The downside here? Possibly no more of their RPGs will be ported to Nintendo Switch for the near future. The future of Xbox brand is a streaming service that will be on every device, including rival platforms if allowed.
