So, now that I have a Switch which I'm quite happy about, the challenge for me is finding games which fit what I'm after on a hand-held. On this one, I find my love of retro gaming + the fact that every single hand-held that I've owned has had a 2D focus / large selection of excellent 2D games, really defines what I want to play on it.

What's that? 2D games.

The problem - Barely any games on it are 2D. It's nearly all 3D. If it's already available on PC/Steam then I don't want it on Switch as there is no point. So I have a small list that I'm aiming at getting:

* Let's Go Eevee
* Link's Awakening
* Super Mario Odyssey - Yep I know it's 3D. But it has 2D bits.

And that's about it for now. My Sony PSP when I absolutely ADORED it back in the day, I only bought like 9 games for it. So even if I only ever play a few games on it, that's fine. I'd just like for them all to be super awesome.

Oh, and Picross and Sparkle. I know they don't look like much, but once you start playing them you won't be able to stop.

Well, there's portability. I'm pretty much buying all indie and old school games on my Switch now before any other platform just for that reason. The choice to play on either big or small screen can't be beat.

That of course excludes games I already own (with a few exceptions).

I own Streets of Rogue on both Steam and Switch (it really is that good), but the Switch version gets more play time thanks to being my commute compressor.
HOWEVER, the Steam version is more feature-rich and sees more frequent updates. So there's advantages and disadvantages to both.

I do this as well, for the exact same reason. For indie games, which usually look and perform the same on the Switch as they do on the PC, there's really no reason not to.

Well I have reasoning behind that view. Prior to getting the switch I'd completely stopped buying consoles / console games after the PS3 and went 100% PC and emulation. Why? Because all the really good games came out on PC anyway, and due to the summer, winter etc sales Steam regularly does, I'd get them at bugger all cost. Compare that to buying it on console and I'd be paying $80+ for what I'd get for $5-$20 on PC. Portability just doesn't factor in for me personally, if it's available on PC as well.

What I want is the exclusives. The killer apps, that you can only get for that system. When I was growing up, you had completely exclusive stuff going on for all the systems and it was widespread. Take my favorite generation, which was the SNES and Megadrive age. Each had clear and MAJOR differences. And the PC had games all to itself, in unique genres to itself. Each was a completely different experience. Even today, playing the games for those systems I can see the clear differences.

Or even the PS1 and PS2 era. Those systems had vast amounts of games that you could only get for those systems. Nowadays when something comes out, chances are that you'll be able to get it on all the platforms. That just doesn't appeal to me. When it's on all of them, it all comes down to controls, which with how now Steam supports gamepads / controllers, so even that is factored out of the equation. If I play it on PC, I have it digitally so it takes up no physical room, and I can play it in nice resolutions etc. Plus mods.

So for Switch I want exclusives. If it's on other systems I'm not interested. That's the console experience I'm after. And when it is those sorts of games, then hell yeah I'll play that portable everywhere. Did the same thing with my PSP for years. And yes I know I could get old console games via the Nintendo store, but I already have that option on my PSP for free, as I have that setup with custom firmware and have emulators etc already setup. Used to play SNES games a fair bit on it.

Says $4.99 for me. When I login to the site and set my region to Australia, then I can't even find that game with the search function. Odd. Is there region locks on Switch games?

I have no idea how that stuff works, but I went back to look at my link at it does mention the "North American store." Sorry about that.

Another game I saw was on sale is Thief Simulator - I've been wanting to try it on Steam, and even though it's getting decent reviews I wasn't willing to shell out 20 bucks for it. It's listed at $6.79 for me atm in the Nintendo store.

There are lots of great Switch exclusives but not many 2D ones. When indie games are released, I've personally I've started waiting for the eventual Switch version, and they almost always get released. I've put everything I want on a wishlist, and while you don't get Steam-level sales, games do go on sale for pretty good discounts, so I've just been watching for that.

The Nintendo eshop is region based, but you can still buy games from these other regions easily enough. I think it requires you to set up a new user on your Switch, and setting the region to whatever when you want to buy a game from another shop.

Yup. Any game from any region will work in any Switch. The only thing that's region specific are the prices in the eShop.

Dunno if there's some major sale on Switch right now or just a lot of cheap games anyway. I just picked up Phantom Doctrine, Virtua Racing and Lichtspeer for like 9 euros total. Never played VR back than, but giving it a go now I guess it's one of those things you had to play at the time to fully appreciate. The handling is pretty janky, tho the minimalist 3D graphics have held up quite well.

I just picked up Super Mario Maker 2, which is a ton of fun, and then I saw Crypt of the Necromancer was on sale for 4 bucks, and figured why not? Also picked up a couple of bargain titles for like a $1 each that actually look OK (My Memory of Us, Mana Sparks, and Shalnor Legends). What can I say, I love buying games for my Switch.

It surprised me to find out that The Touryst is made by the same bunch who created the criminally underappreciated Fast RMX. You should get both!

Me? I'm playing Children of Morta, Earthlock, and the Contra Anniversary Collection, further solidifying my opinion that the Switch is the best console since EVER!

Well I'm only a few hours into it, the visuals are outstanding, its a mix of animal crossing type gameplay and platforming and puzzle solving, except you are tourist with a hawaiian shirt and a moustache. Its just really delightful to play.
Also if you like crypt of the necrodance you should try the Zelda spinoff they made, which uses similar mechanics, its really good.
