T2 FM: Mystery of the Upper Quarter, Mission 1 (May 17, 2018)

    by Niborius
Requires Thief 2 v1.24 or higher
    English/German

What is going on in the upper quarter?

    Hello Everyone!

This is the biggest mission I've built so far. It's the first mission of what's going to be a trilogy.
As usual for my maps, each mission has their own unique elements which you will rarely see in another thief mission.
This mission doesn't take place in the Thief universe.

    Story
The king of the city had your father killed.
Your father lived in the rich upper quarter of the city and was highly respected by everyone.
Why he was killed remains a mystery. And what are those strange noises during the night?
Everyone in the lower quarter has been talking about it lately.

Because of the increase of thieves in town, no one is allowed to walk outside at night, and there have been an increase of guard patrols.
Still, you want to know why your father was killed, so you will have to find a way into the upper quarter.

Congratulation on the release Niborius, I really enjoyed it.

An intensely pretty looking town mission, finished with 100% loot.

I particularly liked the blue hue you added to some of the doors and chairs and all of the religious paintings in a lot of the houses, it gave the mission a very realistic Mediterranean town feeling to the experience.

    Only one gripe...invisible spiders

I'm glad you liked it! Cardia is a very talented mission designer so I feel honored. 1 Hour is pretty quick
And it's nice to hear that people liked the altered textures. I've been to Greece many times so the towns I've seen have been a big inspiration to me.

Thanks fortuni Nice, congrats on 100% loot! How long did that take for you?

And I'm glad you said that about the atmosphere of the mission, as it is exacly what I was aiming for
Btw, can you spoiler tag that last line?

Edit: I see Purgator just said the same thing haha

    Enjoy, Cardia

I hope (and I'm pretty sure) that the second one won't take as long to make as this one. I already have the story written down and have an idea of how i want most of the mission to look like.

Thank you, great mission! However, I'm missing about 200 loot. I have already found the expensive bottle of wine, visited two belltowers, all townhouses, shipyard, warehouse with spiders, guardhouse and that pyramid-like building (from which you can go to the cellar with traps). Any tips? Is this possible to reach the high white tower with lonely archer guard?

If you ever plan to update the mission, I would suggest putting there more guards on expert difficulty, in order to make gameplay more challenging. Maybe you can also add a priest to that beatiful church. Anyway, thank you for your hard work.

Glad you're enjoying it! It's not possible to enter that tower, but close to that tower is a little cave that leads to that guard on the little bridge. There is a loot object in this cave. There is also a little loot at the marketplace. And have you found the secret room in the pyramid's cellar?

I appreciate your suggestion. I'm not sure how to do that but it sounds like a good idea.

Oh, I completely missed the flooded caves area near the docks. Now all my objectives are complete. It's been a great pleasure to play the mission. As for the sequel, are you planning to create something interesting connected to that inaccessible, barred house near the starting place?

    Nice! Well done.

Edit: Wait, I think you are talking about the house itself? You can go in there! Use the sword that you found in the spider cave to break open the doors. Or perhaps you found a rusty key? There is another more stealthy way to get there. But yes, it's not just random. The second and third mission will make it clear what's going on

Congratulations on that mission! I have been well entertained for some hours by it. The only thing that was not so funny was the sound of the bells in and near the church. I'd have preferred it with a slightly lowered volume. Well, at least I'm not the priest of that church...

The graphics were a nice change compared to many of the "usual Thief graphics" we often see in missions. It also felt "just right" for a city quarter near a harbour, although I can't exactly pinpoint why it was so good. That's the mystery of the lower quarter, I guess.

The voices (in-game and in the movies) were a little bit hard to understand for me. Maybe a little raise in volume would be better, if other players report this as well.

Delivering the mission with german language built-in is also appreciated by me. Guess why.

I'm looking forward to the next mission in the series, not only because of the look and feel of this one, but because of the interesting story already developing in mission 1 as well.

P.S.: A little nitpicking... If Scorpio swims to the edge of the harbour opposite the cave with the spiders, there's a large spot where the water surface does not look right (it is more transparent but not blue anymore) and where no swimming sounds can be heard. Not a big deal, since most players might not be interested in swimming there, and it won't break the mission either.
