TDP20AC Mission — Darkness Walk With Us! (11/30/2018)

This thread is for any discussion or questions related to the mission Darkness Walk With Us! by Haplo.
You can download the mission HERE or HERE.
    The contest thread is HERE.

IMPORTANT: IF you installed using TFix, you MUST upgrade to TFix 1.26a or later or this mission WILL be totally broken!

Please give clues instead of outright solutions when helping others and use the spoiler tag when you do this.

Remember that this mission, and by extension every mission made for the contest, is for THIEF GOLD. As such, do not load it with Thief 2! It is highly recommended you do not use the Enhancement Pack and/or HD texture packs to play this mission. It is also recommended you uncheck all optional features TFix comes with if you update to the latest version of the full executable.

OK, I've got to the book, but it's protected by a forcefield...

This one is fantastic so far! Nice, readable patrol patterns making it actually fun to try and ghost, fun, logical puzzles - great!

I've also really been liking this but I got stuck.
I made it to the book and disabled the traps. However, I still need to disable the forcefield. There's a gate which says I need to kill two guardians, referring to fire shadows, but I've only found and killed one of them in the cylindrical crusher room with the levers. The only other place I can see where I haven't been already is a room with a gas arrow on the other side of a gate. There's a tunnel leading into that room but I don't know where the tunnel entrance is.
Got a good laugh out of the guests at the inn.

Figured it out - and Schlock, think you're stuck in the same place:

To get the book, you need the Sacred Hammer to break the forcefield.
To get the Sacred Hammer, you need to put a candle on a plate in one of the rooms.
To get the candle, look for broken masonry in the very first room of the catacombs and look up.

    Now I'm stuck again...

In the crypt area, the only place I haven't got unlocked is the room with the dead burrick. I can see a gas arrow in there.

I've got a fire arrow from the lost city area, and I know where the portal is.

Sooo I need to find out how to get into the room with the dead burrick and the gas arrow.

Hmm, I already had the hammer, I think I might have done some things out of the intended order.

If you've got the hammer, you just need to use it on the forcefield.

I did, and now I have the book, but I'm still stuck. I can't find the way to the gas arrow, same as you, and I still haven't found the second guardian to get past the lost city gate.

You've already killed both guardians, otherwise you couldn't exit the crypt area.

Nicked: Gas arrow: look for burrick tunnels in the lake/portal area.

I haven't left the crypt area, one of the guardian gates (the ones in the room with two red faces and an obelisk) are still closed and I haven't seen any lakes, burricks, or portals yet, although I did read about the portal. I assume that getting past this gate would be leaving the crypt then.

You'll find the second guardian after picking up the book and trying to exit that room. Where are you now exactly?

Oh man, I feel real dumb right now. Last time I checked the gate I accidentally loaded an old save from just before I got the book, on my more recent save it is in fact open, thanks!

Nearly finished this brilliant mission from Haplo and I didn't need to ask for any clues or even refer to the forum up to now.

I've done everything, all I need to do is get back to my room, but the rope is too short, so can't go that way, I'm guessing it's got something to do with the portal but it's not activated. Clue/hint please.

Fortuni: Have you arrived at the portal yet? If yes, the Keepers' book mentioned what needed to be done with it. If you haven't found the portal yet let me know where you are and I'll help you. I'm guessing that what you think is the portal is something else.

Good old curse of the forum.

The moment I posted I worked out what to do, had already found the items I needed and now I'm back at the hotel

Thanks for this mission Haplo, I was initially worried you may put into too many obtuse puzzles and I would have given up. But no it was a brilliant piece of design with everything you needed to find being relatively easy so long as you explored everywhere. Both of the Guardians were fun to deal with, thankfully not too many zombies or haunts to interrupt your game, excellent use of textures throughout with a great Newdark sheen to them, the hotel especially looked great.

Overall a worthy contender as it ticks every box, from plot, gameplay, T1 nostalgia, looks and feel.

Thanks! Was obvious when I found it!

And done. This was fantastic! Great puzzles, good, humorous writing and a gradually expanding story, challenging without being frustrating - huge amount of fun.

Haplo, for those of us who don't use TFix and are up to date at NewDark 1.26 via manual install, is there anything we need to do to insure your mission will work? i.e. was the issue caused by something older versions of TFix did or is it a patch we also need to some file?

I use TFix Lite, and the mission worked just fine for me.

Was very impressed with this mission!
There are some really clever puzzles and DromEd wizardry here. The guardian reacting to being looked at is definitely the most memorable moment. The mission was also quite engaging, constantly surprising me with new twists. At the same time, as a ghoster, I found the mission to not be my cup of tea because it's not suited to that playstyle at all. As a result, I was way out of my comfort zone most of the time Overall, my feelings about it are a bit mixed, but objectively, the mission is great!

Nicked: Thanks! Happy you enjoyed it.

Marbleman: Thanks. I tried to ensure it was possible to ghost the mission (except for the guardians, of course). Peter Smith verified it too. But if there were any parts that gave you trouble let me know and I'll take a look.

Yandros: If you don't have TFix then you don't need to worry about anything. I never used TFix myself. Only the people who have TFix installed need to make sure it is upgraded. This is because TFix until version 1.26 added the NVScript script to the marker archetype with some parameters (to fix a bug in mission 10 Undercover), overriding my own NVScript markers. In any case, I have my usual script checking system in place which warns you.

Now to think of it, the warning text at the top of the thread should say "If you are using TFix you MUST upgrad to 1.26a,...". Would you mind changing the first post in this thread? Thanks.

Excellent mission, full of surprises! Just kept getting bigger each time I discovered a new area and I wasn't disappointed.

I think my favorite bit was anticipating the great hall in the lost city area only to find it caved in and one measly (but essential) fire arrow.

Yep! After constantly making the player think the mission is over and then opening a whole new area, I thought I'd do the reverse with the Great Hall! Glad you enjoyed it.
