You have a choice of two options:

    Option 1:
Hint: Where is Argaux? Maybe he has the key you need? You should have either heard or read something that suggests where you might find him.
Strong hint: Argaux was hanged. Did you see a hanged man around anywhere?
Answer: Argaux's body is on the gallows in the square to the southeast, and he has the key on his belt.

    Option 2:
Hint: Perhaps if you search his room very carefully you might find that Argaux kept a spare key...
Strong hint: There's a spare key in the room. Where could you hide a key where nobody would think to look?
Answer: The spare key is balanced on the edge of the candle hanging from the ceiling. If you stand on the bed, you should be able to see it.

I couldn't wait to get properly home to play the contest missions, so after a little (read: a lot) of fighting with my school's network to download the missions, I decided to start with this one, since I had the most involvement in it outside my own. I enjoyed myself for the most part. I thought that the slowly rising slope of the level in particular was clever, and thought the tributes to lost TTLG legends was great (The MsLedd one was obvious, but am I seeing a small Lady Rowena tribute in the named characters?). There were a couple of things that held it back, though, namely the lockpicking and loot requirements. They weren't Rocksbourg locks, but what they lacked in strength they made up for in numbers; there was just far too much time spent picking locks. I thought that 2200 loot was stretching it, even for Expert. I spent nearly 1/4 of my playtime running around loot hunting, because there wasn't enough to be picked up along the way. The inclusion of secrets was also interesting, making me wonder how you did it. There were a few things that I felt shouldn't have been secrets, though, since they were literally needed to finish the level (Di Rupo's secret room being one example). The horn puzzle was a bit obscure also; it made sense after I read some hints, but I was stranded on my own.

All in all, great mission. I'm proud to have been a part of it.

Did you search his corpse for the key to open up that lock?

Every character having a unique name is something I really enjoyed in Lady Rowena's missions—so in that way it's less of a tribute and more stealing a fun idea! A fair number of the names were contributed by the translators and testers too.

90% of that was just learning how DEBRIEF.STR works, and realising that any qvar can show up as an end-of-mission stat (it was Yandros's Hammerite Deathmatch that made me aware that customising the debrief was possible in the first place). The rest is just a couple of simple scripts to increment my qvar, show the message, and play the sound. I posted the scripts over in TEG if you're really curious.

Has anyone one got a copy of the latest squirrel.osm I can have?

I have Tfix 1.26a installed, I installed it only a week ago but I don’t have a squirrel.osm in my TG folder so I copied a squirrel.osm from other thief install, but now this mission CTD when I try to start playing after the opening cut-scene.

Edit: Also try playing this mission via a second TG instal which had squirrel.osm installed, same problem. Any ideas anyone?

@fortuni: Download the TFix Lite (NewDark 1.26) archive and extract its squirrel.osm.

Edit: Oops, just saw your edit. Is the mission leaving you in a room with just a gold plaque complaining that it can't find squirrel.osm, or is it actually crashing?

Just as you posted I installed TFix 1.26, I had previously installed 1.26a. It would appear that 1.26 has the latest squirrel in it's package that makes the mission run, but the latest TFix 1.26a doesn't contain the latest squirrel, or if it does it's not installing it into my Thief instal.

Voodoo can you fix this please.

To answer you question, when I first tried to play the mission I was in the room with the gold plaque, but when I copied a squirrel.osm from another instal the game CTD after the opening cut-scene.

TFix 1.26 and 1.26a both definitely have squirrel.osm included. I just ran both installers on a bare Thief install to verify.

So something else was messed up with your installation. But you've got it working now, I take it?

Just to say I'm really enjoying this mission. It's very well built with a large city that initially seems rather vacant of loot but actually there's quite a lot of well hidden loot so you really do need to search everywhere. Am currently in the Hammerite sanctuary and have been really impressed with all the readables, you've managed to get the Hammerite mentality and ridiculous speech style spot on. For a first mission it's excellent, well done vfig.

Just a pity there aren't many secrets in this mission.

Is there a sneaky way to stop the ritual? I scoped it out a bit, but ended up going on a gasmine/flashbomb frenzy.

There is! To be sneaky you'll have to figure out how to make the lights go off. The ritual's quite long, so you should have time to observe and experiment.

I liked it. It was thematically many ways like another contest entry, the 2nd mission of Tomb of St. Tennor but more casual in that it just wasn't as large and filled with a lot of very maze-like and secret things to look for. This is more of a one-sitting kind of mission.

Very good for the first mission, vfig. It somehow reminds me good old, first city missions for TDP/TG: Secret way, Lorgan's web, Trial by night etc... It is sometimes angular, and, may be too big for its own good (not so much places to sneak into - but the map is relatively large) and uneven - but I like that there are places with multiple ways to break into And it has very engaging and dynamic plot.
